I'm game starved....I just can't seem to get into games anymore...and while I do need a gaming revolution, I have been thinking about joining the WoW revolution.

Where is it the cheapest to buy at?
What kind of computer specs do I need?
How much is it per month?
What kind of time will I need to devote myself to it?

What paths would you recommend?

- It's probably still $50.
- I ran it on a 1ghz, 512 RAM, geforce 2
- ~$15 depending on how you do your payments
- if you've played an MMORPG before: less time than most of those, if you havent: a LOT of time. maybe 10-20 hours a week... 1000+ hours overall (possibly a lot more)

I'm a Elf Hunter and if you like pet classes and the ability to solo (ie not forced into grouping) that's a good way to go. I'm sure others will have their fav classes too. :)

If you have a job or girlfriend, don't get this.

I got it less than a week ago, and I've probably spent half of the last week on WoW. I love this game, but I know that when I get a job I'm gonna have to quit.

My specs are 512MB RAM, Radeon 9250 videocard, 2.4ghz processor(I think).

Well, if you want to play a MMORPG, and consider yourself casual, WoW is your best bet.
Besides the fact you can solo pretty well with pretty much any class, the game has a "Rested Experience" system for people who don't play as much. In 10 days of being logged out in a rested area (Inn or major city), you will gain 1 and a half levels of double exp. You can only maintain 1 and a half levels of rested exp at one time, but you could concievably play a couple times a week and still make good progress and enjoy yourself.

You can't solo the entire game though, pretty much all instances require a group, and the end game is pretty much group only. Besides the fact, groups can be more fun anyway :) But you can get to 60 all by yourself if need be, but instances are a good source of good items and quest rewards.

one thing which I would recommend with regards to specs, is to have 1GB RAM ... 1GB RAM seems to make a big difference in WoW, compared to 512 MB .. (I'm not sure about the performance of 768MB RAM)

It will run perfectly fine with 512MB ram though. I ran it with an 800mhz processor, Geforce FX 5200 (comparable to GF MX 440) and 320MB of ram.

Basically, if you like joining random shit-head guilds or running around town like an idiot trying to meet people, you will love WoW. If, however, you like to meet people while actually playing the game, and form friendships with people of similar skill, playstyle, and speed of advancement, you might try a well designed MMO.

Good luck.

World of Warcraft happens to be the best MMO out there. All other MMOs are terrible.

Well designed MMOs are not designed so all non-instanced content is played alone. I'm sorry, but the lead designer has shit between his ears.

EDIT: seriously, I can formulate a coherant sentence

Manabyte's correct, because Ragnarok Online's the most popular and it's utter shit. Followed by Lineage 1, which is also utter shit.

THANKFULLY, WoW's the best MMORPG because it's actually the best.

What about PvP? There are PVP and non-PVP servers? I liked battling human players in my old MUD days, but I'm not into getting killed and losing all my stuff..

Play on non-PVP or else as soon as you hit 22-24 and go into the zones for that level range a level 60 ganker will kill you and sit on your corpse until you quit the game.

You can't lose stuff for getting killed, ever. If you're killed by CPU controlled characters you need to eventually repair your equipment, but no other player can ever steal stuff from you.

If it weren't for overcrowding in places like Ironforge, 512 would be ok. But that place just kills performance, even after you leave. Huge pvp raids are a pain with 512 as well. Performance was better for me when I set textures to low, but that was just unacceptable for me at the time (since I had a rad 9800 pro).

The more advanced your video card and the higher the texture settings, the more system RAM will be used.

1 GB was fine with my 9800 Pro at max settings. But not enough for my 6800 Ultra at max settings. I would go over in Ironforge to 1200 MB.

Agreed on the pally. Good for lower levels, but teh suck at 60. It takes like 2 minutes to kill something.

Most popular =/= best. :lol It's great fun, but akascream is right about the shit community.

I run into great people every day...shitheads too.

Compared to xbox Live - WoW's community is comprised of saints and scholars.

Your seriously not helping me in using my 1 year card

Do the math... more people = more shitheads.

They are just easier to find nowadays.

(I've been blessed this go 'round... very rarely have I run into a shithead. Yay me!)

PvP servers 4 lyfe.
I started PvE, but got tired of people looking for new ways to exploit the stupid combat flags. PvP is a bit more unforgiving.. Much more exciting, too.

Seriously, WoW is extremely well designed. Excellent for both solo (tons of quests) or group (grinding on elite monsters available for all level ranges). The classes are somewhat disbalanced right now but will get better. I play Alliance on Kel Thuzad, if it weren't for my guild <goon squad> I'd have joined horde (comprised of a more mature playerbase) ages ago. Go pvp, pve is indeed a broken ruleset full of flag exploits and annoyances.

That's funny, I'm on a PvP server and I'm doing just fine into the 40s. Of course there is occasional ganking, but it's also far more interesting and exciting minute to minute than a PvE server, in my opinion.

No. Only in certain cases and only if you are Grand Master in Priest Ninjitsu like me. "Level 59; 2 57's and a 58...I need something from the 58...out in the middle of Winterspring, asking to be ganked...yet I PULL IT OFF...

I agree, I am currently leveling an alt and am at 29 and have only been ganked once by a 43 rogue. Funny enough, I ran into the exact same rogue the next day on my main (a 60 warlock) while farming herbs. Revenge sure was fun. Anyway, if you can't stand the inconvience of having to spend 2 minutes running back to your body every once in a while because someone attacked you that was higher level, or you were fighting a mob, then you should go to a PvE server. If not, defintely roll your character on a pvp server. It is so much more exciting. Some of my favorite moments in the game are the pvp wars that break out at Thorium Point and Blackrock Mountain between Horde and Alliance MC groups.
