Thinking of getting Growlanser; how is it?

Yeah I could look at some reviews, but this year has seen my trust with them run into the ground. So I come to you, wise sages of GAF, to give me small impressions. Especially about the music; I can get into a game real easy like if it has nice music. Should I go for it?

Music = Good, reminds me a lot of lunar. Gets a little old quick though, but never on my nerves

Pluses = Characters, Story, Stratedgy, Voice Acting
Minuses = Graphics, Depth (don't expect Disagea customization)

the music is OK. totally generic 16-bit CD-style RPG music, for the most part. pleasantly nostalgic, nothing i'd ever consider listening to outside of the context of the game but enjoyable while playing.

the game derives its depth not from the need to build characters immensely but much more from the various tasks and situations you'll encounter in battle, which i think is a lot more interesting personally. i'm not a big SRPG fan, and i'd characterize this as an SRPG for people who don't like them, really, as it's fast paced and fun. note: i have no opinion on whether people who *do* like SRPGs will like this or not.

growlanser II is really streamlined and fast paced. growlanser III adds in a lot of RPG trappings that are rather muddying, especially the (groan) random dungeons.

the urushihara character artwork is gorgeous and fills the screen, which makes up for the early 32-bit (and not particularly attractive, at that) graphics.

a pack of two fun games, and if you really get into them, definitely worth the money.

do not buy the limited edition or you are a twat with cheap game jewelry, forever shaming your family name.

Both pretty decent games, just finished part 2 myself

mini review:

Growlanser two
decent music
good art
decent if somewhat cliched story
voice acting is pretty good except for the main guy...WEIN SUCKS! Why Vic? Why???
battles are repetitive, fight same enemies over and over again til you're done the story section
I like the depth in the ring system though!

Growlanser three
story much better
use fewer characters so there's no freakin chaos going on all the time and you don't have a menu popping up at you stopping the gameplay every second
I love the fact there are more dialogue choices and you roam around on a map instead of going from point to point like in Growlanser 2 (a la final fantasy tactics)

Extras
Damn but WD knows how to put them together, dbls sided packaging + watch = good times

However, if you're looking for a solid rpg, I say go for Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne...I hated the other ones but I love this one, it's like a violent and demonic ver of Pokemon

One of best things about Growlanser Generations is the wide range of characters. Some of them are impetuous and speak before they think...like Hans, and others are extremely diplomatic and can turn almost anything around, like say President Burns. Of course the absolute best part of the game is the outtakes, but even some of those were left out as inappropriate...

Syckx, hear anything about DJ making guides for DQVr, or Slime Mori Mori??

Of course not that it would imply anything if they were.

Vireland, please delete that. I had no right to post it, and I withdrew my original post. I apologize to you and Double Jump, I was out of line.

Tim, nor any member of Double Jump ever gave me information.

are you beginning to realize how popular this forum is now?

Aw, I missed something here, didn't I?

Well, I suddenly have a strange urge to order a copy of Growlanser Generations!
Available at all fine video game stores near you!

Ok, my interest is piqued, what the hell happened here?

I dunno, but I don't think we'll ever find out - the Men in Black have thoroughly cleansed this thread.

I think some people said some things, and then everyone thought better of it and you should go buy Growlanser Generations!

Last time I checked out this thread, some guy here described what exactly happened between WD and Double Jump that caused the GG strategy guide to never materialize, then another guy claiming to be a DJ employee came in and pwned him with a story (true or not, we'll never know.) Then the original story teller apologized. That was last I saw it. Now, this.

I really like.
Easy to get into, thanks a (mostly) good interface and few stats to care about. Still offered a good challenge and interesting battles, thanks to the variety of situations and focus on specific goals for victory.
Pleasant characters, music, branching story.
A smoothly enjoable game, from the start to... well, I'm somewhere in G3 now.

One issue with the interface annoyed me: having to use different menus to equip rings and gems.
