Jesus.

So hypothetically, you could be on GAF all day long!

*runs out to buy one*

Shit i didn't even see that -$25! They pay you to buy the phone, me like! If i could afford the monthly payments that would really be mine.

Not for -$25 it won't! Plus the Audiovox is about half the size of that PDA wannabe. :)

If I want a PDA, I'll get a PDA like a Dell X50v or something.

Yep... just wait until you actually start trying to enter text into that phone. An IRC client is useless if you're pressing 30 keystrokes to say - lmfao. Typing in the URL for GAF alone will have you wanting to gouge out your eyes. Anyways, you'll see.... been there done that.

I agree, you've sold me on this. It looks like the rebates last through the year so i'll request this for christmas. Thanks a lot! :D

Fuck, the amazon $200 rebate ends today.

<----- am cry :(

Oh and just FYI on size:

-world's smallest Smartphone: 1.81 in x 4.25 in x 0.63 in
- Treo650 : 2.3 x 4.4 x 0.9 inches

I don't know if you have seen them, but they are roughly the same size. So is the MDAIII.

Oh of course, of course. :)

Basically, I look at this phone as a PHONE that happens to have all sorts of other nifty features as a bonus, and in a pinch, can serve for doing the stuff you say.

And for the price, it really can't be beat.

Yeah for the price it can't be beat. Just don't expect to use those applications that require a lot of text entry very often. Keypad text entry gets old very fast. That and lack of even 2.5G bandwidth makes them very painful on any real website. The 650 supports EDGE which is about 10x what the normal GPRS channels give.

I do a lot of development in the mobile space (currently writing an article for Java Lobby on the subject) so I've used many many devices and data entry is still a key issue for smart phones. And all the WiFi guys are nuts - your battery life will be worse than leaving bluetooth running nonstop.

Audivox SMT 5600:

volume: 1.81 * 4.25 * 0.63 = 4.84 cu in.
mass: ~3.5 oz.

Treo 600:

volume: 2.3 * 4.4 * 0.9 = 9.1 cu in.
mass: ~6 oz.

I stand by my statement that the Treo is nearly twice as big.

It's just nifty little things like: the smart phone knows my schedule because it syncs to my exchange server at work (in realtime over GPRS)...

So the phone knows to mute the ringer and go to vibrate whenever it knows I should be in a meeting...

Just stuff like that is so awesome.

My brother just got that phone last week, aaaaao. It's pretty cool but I'm not as big a fan of Microsoft's Smartphone OS, myself. I prefer Pocket PC Phone Edition or Palm. My next phone will be either the Treo 650 or the i-mate Jam.

hehe, okay. DIdn't know we started measuring phones by volume. You sit them next to each other and I guarantee you they will look about the same size... the 650 will sit taller on the desk though, otherwise if you sat one on the other its pretty much the same.

I'd been looking at the iMates and the more full PDA2Ks and they are nice too.The Sprint variants are nice because they support EVDO (3G wireless) but if you aren't on Sprint, they use the same old slow GPRS network.

Actually, I've read that the new i-mates and the Treo 650 will be "Edge" enabled on AT&T/Cingular's network so they should be a bit faster than standard GPRS.

Also, one thing to consider about Sprint is that the PDA2K (they call it the Audiovox 6600) will *not* have built in wifi, though the phone will have it on other carriers. =/

Yeah... doesn't really matter so much since I'm on TMobile at the moment and really don't have many plans to leave- though I will threaten it come December to get new free phones :)

If the iMates/PDA2K/MDAIII supports EDGE also (which I haven't been able to get a definitive answer on since I can't test it as noone has a complete EDGE rollout in Atlanta), then I may pick up one of the iMates as well.

Yes, absolutely, I agree with you guys.

If you want a real PDA that does real PDA stuff, that happens to also have phone features, go for the bigger more full function devices.

If you want a PHONE, with some nifty PDA features on the side, it's hard to beat the Audiovox.

In my case, I already HAVE a full function PDA, I needed a new phone anyway (I had a dying Sanyo piece of crap), and the price was just too good to pass up. :D

This is the beauty of ActiveSync. I just drag and dropped all my bookmarks to the phone from my desktop, and I don't have to type anything to read GAF. :D

In general I don't expect to do much data entry on any mobile device. At most a brief note to follow up with a real response when I get to a PC.

Even with a keyboard, mobile devices are just too clumsy to enter much stuff into. Mostly they're just useful for getting at data when I'm not near a PC.

The phone is $225, and the Amazon rebate is $200.

I already have AT&T service. So, I could get this phone and use it with AT&T for $25?

The $200 rebate expired yesterday, i believe :(

Looks like there is a good chance there will be another Amazon rebate looking at other phones, though.

Yup. I can speak from experience...I've been using the Treo 600 (previous model to what's shown in the pic...not too much different either so I won't bother upgrading) for a year now, and it ROCKS. The price is also quite high, however.

Some things I can do with the Treo:

-Browse just about any web site (yes, including GAF OMGTEHWOW!!11)
-Get e-mail downloaded straight to the phone without going on the web.
-AOL IM for FREE.
-Play MP3s
-Use MP3s as ring tones
-Take pictures
-Take video footage (I have yet to try this though...don't feel like paying for the program!)
-Watch full length DVD movies (use a free program to compress them down into 100mb AVIs and can store 3-4 on my 512mb SD card! :D You can also shrink MOV, MPEG, and AVI files down. For example, I currently have Kill Bill volume 1, Kung-Pow, the latest South Park, and all the edited GI JOE outros on my card)
-Play Game Gear games via the Gizmo emulator
-Play NES games via the NESem emulator

The keyboard works great; it's surprisingly easy to type quickly using the Treo's full QWERTY keyboard layout. I've made many posts here using the phone.

And it fits so damn comfortably in my pocket. The web alone makes it all worth it during the boring college classes I sit through every day.

I thought EDGE was a 3x improvement over standard GPRS?

Reading up on some websites (tell me if I am wrong):

GPRS is 14.4 kbps per TDMA slot.

GPRS class 10, which is what my Audiovox phone is, is 3r2t, which means it gets 3 TDMA slots to receive, and 2 TDMA slots to send. This means download bandwidth is roughly 43.2 kbps and upload bandwidth is roughly 28.8kbps. Or around that of an analog modem.

EDGE, due to enhanced 8PSK modulation, gets 3x the bandwidth per slot. Assuming the TDMA slot allocation remains the same, an EDGE device will get about 128 kbps down, and 84 kbps up. This assumes the carrier doesn't cut the slot allocation to allow more customers on. A nice upgrade if your network supports it.

UMTS is the true sucessor. It uses W-CDMA instead of TDMA as the air interface, and offers 1920 kbit/s. Unfortunately no one has deployed any UMTS anywhere yet.

I am not mentioning CDMA2000, which I've heard is generally superior to GSM/GPRS.

Yeah, i found that out. Can you use mp3s as the ringtones?

Page 85 of the manual says WMA, WAV and MID files can be used, so yes, you can use your own songs as ringers.

I've been eyeing the Treo 600...but nothing can compare to that Audiovox deal.

I mean, for the price...I live in Canada though...

Bluetooth blows, I need wifi.

Can you point me to a wireless wifi headset please? Thanks. ;)

Bluetooth headsets and the ability to sync via bluetooth are a feature that I've gotten so use to with my 3650 that I won't pick up another phone til T-Mobile has one with those features... the new Blackberry had bluetooth but only for headset... so no purchase... and the IPaq T-Mobile has... I'm not paying $499.99 for a phone...forget that shit.
