This interview with the creator of La Blue Girl is pretty hilarious

I mean, he sounds like a cool guy, but damn. Using a whataboutism argument to address criticism toward Japan and/or anime is a very weak one. Problems in both countries can be criticized and discussed without trying to one up each other in the domestic issues olympics.

He addressed that.

His argument is that Japan is a safe place so all the hentai and acts of perversions are just ways to live out own fantasies and don't lead to crimes and riots.

It didn't sound like he was deflecting, he's saying that there's no link between hentai and real life crime and questioning the motives of journalists who would rather worry about animated porn causing damage to youth over the very real and observable consequences of the current gun law situation in the USA.

In other words, he doesn't think that there is a problem worth criticizing regarding hentai to begin with, and points to Japan still being a very safe country for girls/women despite its long history featuring animated tentacle porn as proof.

Ofcourse, you can then argue that Japan hides all its sex crimes and might not be as safe as figures would show, if you wanted.

Except that it's not what he is doing, but he is pointing that one apparently has no consequence on real people (since crime statistics in japan is extremely low, even considering underreporting), and the other does, but some people like to focus to one and not the other. It's not whataboutism, it's hypocrisy of the highest order, like pro-life idiots.

But that's where he would be wrong. A global study by the Lancet medical journal showed that Japan had a sexual assault rate of 12.2 to 16.7 percent while the united states had a rate of 13 percent, compared to the global average of 7.3 percent. Even at it's lowest estimate, 12.2, that means Japan is only slightly safer for women than the united states. But I'm sure under reporting keeps that number down a bit.

I'll also link this Japan Times article that also has the numbers since you need to make an account to access the study.

Again, this statement is wrong.

Anyway, bless this man and his clever idea.

Also I wonder what's the min weight to be considered morbidly obese in Japan.

Not to start anything, but do you believe the US rate to be 100% accurate?

12.2, that means Japan is only slightly safer for women than the united states.

Well, even if we put Japan's prevalence of non-partner sexual violence on par with the USA's 13%.
We know that the high sexual violence is a result of hentai and stuff in Japan. How do we explain simililar stasts for the USA?

It's also not good style to pick a study which is a behind a paywall.

American journalists have come to me and told me that my hentai scenes will corrupt American youth. Yet, you still have very little gun control in America, and kids have access to this all the time. You see in Japan, nothing happens, you can walk on the street in the middle of the night with a skimpy T-shirt or a mini-skirt on and nothing happens, but, in American, seems like you really care about the human rights of the anime and manga world. You don’t give a shit about real human rights, but you will do all you can to judge or put down Japanese culture.

daaaaaaaaammmmnnnnnnnnnnn

Wait, what?

It's also not good style to pick a study which is a behind a paywall.
If you noticed I also linked the article from the Japan Times that details some of the information from the study.

Also, the Lancet is one of the most well respected medical journals in the world. The pay wall is something most professional studies have.

If you pick a study or source then it should be accessible, after all you ignored the free works of the WHO about that topic for some reason.

Like I've said, the Japan Times article has the relevant information from it. You can certainly read that if you don't believe the information. And please do share those free works by WHO.

The safety of Japan at night is debatable (though unarguably better than much of America), but this right here is great.

First of all I have to say that I have no problem with pornography, and while hentai isn't really my thing and I think stuff like tentacle porn is a bit creepy, I don't judge how people get their freak on.
HOWEVER, that's a shit response, it really is, his "I don't give a fuck" attitude is pretty entertaining, this is nothing but silly and tired whataboutism.

It's not a whataboutism when people actually have been prosecuted for drawings over here.

God forbid someone put down Japanese culture

People on this site do it all the damn time. It gets a bit tiring honestly, so those that are sick of it will latch onto comments like this, even if they aren't 100% accurate.

Again, this statement is wrong.

That's why I ended my post the way I did. It's his argument, not mine.

Either way, my main point was that people are accusing him of deflecting the question when he clearly gave an answer, even if that answer might not have been factually accurate.

Lol, that was a fun interview. Think La Blue Girl was the first hentai I'd ever seen, people at the video rental store just thought it was a mere cartoon lol. I was only in middle school, but got away with renting that, Night Shift Nurses, and Bible Black.
Flashbacks to MS, first exposure to magical dicks and S&M.

Man, he's good people. You know how I know? Anyone who's an ass man is good people.

Damn, I would have loved your video store.

My experience does echo his statement. I've seen so many girls in miniskirts walk alone at night in the Tokyo streets when I lived there, and men and even gangs of men would leave them alone, or purposefully move to the other side of the street. It was completely oppositeville to what I was used to. If I would hazard a guess any higher rates of sexual harassment would indeed be some opportunity touching and groping in the subway. (or in other places than tokyo)

The back-and-forth of the line expressed on the whataboutism of the situation just highlights the difficulties of having a nuanced outlook on a lot of things that is rooted in the culture and societal differences, some better, some worse.

La Blue Girl takes me back. Maybe the first hentai I'd ever seen. Back then I didn't really know anything about anime in general, but I had seen Ninja Scroll, Ghost in the Shell, and a couple others, so by then I just assumed that all anime had a whole bunch of titties.

I have three sons; one is my assistant, one is a professional singer, and one likes this thing called “scat.” The last one is my punishment.

My favorite part.

Fun interview, but accepting outright his comments about human rights and the culture differences therein between Japan and the U.S.A. is doing nothing but ignoring those differences just because he's a candid, funny guy with a sharp tongue. Just because it contains some broad elements of truth wrapped in a snappy quip doesn't make it particularly observant or insightful.

Nailed it!
