Same. Full price day 1. I've made sure to hold off a bit longer before buying games and get them as cheap as I can. Definitely won't be falling for it again if we ever get ES6.
It's not a super horrible game it just needed another 3 years of dev time to polish and add more content. I might install it again to see how it is now.
The basic problem it has is that the travel is so awfully limited. You navigate everywhere by menu and loading screen. So, for all the promise of an endless universe, it ends up feeling more cramped and limited than a title from the early 90s.
I enjoyed exploring planets themselves. And the combat is much improved.

i wished they added some mysterious grey aliens or something poking around in the background. and also the ability to raid with a small robot army. just some creative ideas
& done! second playthrough was the charm (bailed after a couple dozen hours first time). was really tired of it by the time i finished, & happy to say goodbye. my constellation buds were still as cheesy as i remembered them, & i had no interest in ship/base building, bounty hunting, or any other peripheral crap. it'll be a while, if ever, that i'm tempted to go through all that again (my favorite faction was definitely ryujin. seriously slimy & not really all that far-fetched)...

yep. unless you really, really enjoy the space combat? it'd've worked equally well if new atlantis, akila, neon, cydonia & kryx were just all on the same map, separated by some explorable terrain. would've been reminiscent of some final fantasy games, actually...
