goes into more details here.

The superintendent made the decision for three primary reasons, Hansen said. First, Halloween parties and parades waste valuable classroom time. Second, some families can't afford costumes and the celebrations thus can create embarrassment for children.

Both of those reasons seemed sensible to the parents who spoke to ABC News affiliate KOMO-TV in Seattle. But the district's third reason left some Puyallup parents shaking their heads.

The district said Halloween celebrations and children dressed in Halloween costumes might be offensive to real witches.

I can see #1, a very valid reason
I can even get with #3, even though I think that is absolute bullshit but whatever.

but the #2 reason irritates the hell out of me.

Yes, efficiency is KEY! Fun is a productivity killer!

Haha.

Yeah, one afternoon... elementary schools in our area use a couple of hours for the kids to have fun on the last school day before Halloween night (assuming they're still doing it the same way). Big fucking deal.

So let's see.

They've taken away recess.

Now they're taking away Halloween.

Let's make sure kids don't have any fun at all!

What assholes.

Wait, you think #3 is a better reason than #2? You feel more sympathy towards witches than poor people?

To be fair, unless the school limits students to a uniform, then #2 is obviously already a bunch of bullshit. The administration can pretend it's blind to kids who are victims of ridicule due to economic limitations (aka 'they can't afford to dress as cool as the others'), but that does not nullify its existence within the system.

I'm not saying it isn't bs, but to think respecting witches is more of a valid reason than respecting the feelings of poor kids is pure insanity.

My kid has recess everyday. So it's not like that nationwide. It's a public school too.

Uh, so why not just ask that people don't dress up as witches? No need to cancel the whole thing. Besides, Halloween has long since lost any real connection to Wicca thanks to the holiday usurping Catholics.

No longer boycotting the Wolfenstein franchise
The funny thing is how this will create a dislike for Wiccans, not encourage tolerance of any form. Now they're evil witches that hate kids having fun.

I feel more sympathy to the witches than hearing about how such and such will hurt the kids feelings.(both are bullshit reasons though) Nothing to do with poor people.

cause I have heard #2 used for things like

"we need to go to uniforms because some parents can't afford the new clothes all the time and because it hurt the kids feelings who can't wear the latest clothes."

"We can't have <insert playground sport> because some kids can't compete and it might hurt their feelings."

"We can't use red ink to grade papers because we think that red is bad color and it might hurt their feelings"

Look, the matter of protecting poor families with kids doesn't change the problem. It's just reactionary ruling. Now you might get the kids everyone knows is poor blamed for Halloween celebrations being canceled. It might only worsen the problem. You have to deal with the social structure developed by public schools in order to fix that problem.

Meanwhile, America continues to seem hell bent on teaching kids happiness is a sin.

I honestly think that political correctness will eventually destroy the US. I don't know how bad it is in other countries, but it's bad here. Oh feel sorry for the poor kids, feel sorry for the Wiccans. Who cares? Since when has it become a law that activities or thoughts, etc. have to be limited so as not to offend Wiccans or anyother group of anykind(regardless of how large or small) because those groups may possibly be offended? People need to toughen up and not be such wimps. Heck, now we're getting to the point like in this instance, where we stop things because there is a possibility someone may be offended. As far as the article says, no Wiccan has come forward with any complaints. And if they did, they should be told thanks, but who cares what you think. :p Same if some nut Christian or other group complained about Santa Claus being pictured or at a school. :p The fun is being drained out of society. :p

There should be some 'rule' that if you don't like something, fine, don't take part in it. But don't end it for everyone else because someone doesn't or perhaps won't want to take part.
