Watch the original teaser trailer for The Empire Strikes Back, which is notable for featuring solely concept art by Ralph McQuarrie but no film footage. Among the McQuarrie paintings seen are the Rebel hangar on Hoth, Luke on a tauntaun, Darth Vader aboard a Star Destroyer, Cloud City, an Imperial probe droid, and Luke's final duel with Darth Vader.

Trailers were so quaint back then.

That is a terrible trailer. Although pretty much all old trailers are awful. I wish I could remember what was the first "modern" trailer. I swear I read an article about it once...

Despite the mediocrity of the trailer, I now want to watch the Empire Strikes Back.

Not sure about being the first, but the trailer for Alien still stands the test of time remarkably well. Edit: lol @ 3 Alien mentions in a row

Hmm...

Oct 9 - Original ANH Teaser posted to official Star Wars youtube channel
Oct 16 - Original ESB Teaser posted to official Star Wars youtube channel

There was a rumour floating around recently that there will be a Star Wars 7 teaser soon featuring Luke and perhaps even a cast announcement. Seems like these teasers could be counting down to the new one. Next week we'll probably see the original Jedi Teaser. I guess the question is whether they will then do the SW7 teaser the week after, or if they will go through the prequel teasers first.

I remember seeing this in the theater when I was a kid. I had no idea what the fuck it was all about, but after waiting for three years to get a glimpse at "the new Star Wars" we were super excited none the less. :)

They should make a teaser for Ep 7 in this style. The movie will be popular enough as it is, teaser or no teaser, so they may as well do something neat like that.

I bet if I saw this in the theaters I would have peed my pants in excitement. Probably would have thought the movie would be cooler than it was because I would just make up this awesome vision in my head incapable of being put in a film.

The worst trailer is Howard the Duck:

Notice how they never actually show you the stupid looking face of the duck. As a 10 year old kid I thought it was going to be awesome. Then I paid my allowance to see it and I knew, even at 10, as soon as they finally showed the creepy duck's face in the movie that it was going to be terrible.

Hey George Lucas I want my fucking allowance money back you piece of shit.

Man what is it about 80s cinematography that makes everything look so fucking cool. Did they have special magic cameras back then or what?

Practical effects/models/miniatures/etc.

CGI has come a long way but nothing beats old-fashioned lighting. It feels real. Oversaturated orange/blue shots of modern cinema never look real.

Keep waiting. That dude drove himself damn near crazy making that. It's probably never coming out. And even if it did - it wouldn't be like when he did Star Wars: Revisited, which was a lot of work, but at least felt like a fun thing. This would feel like rewarding a guy for going insane in one of the most mundane of ways.

re: Empire's cinematography - it's not an 80s thing. That's Peter Suschitzky, one of the best. Check his filmography - all his movies look fucking gorgeous. which is extra notable considering how many of those movies are Cronenberg's.

Film, good cameras and lenses. Now everything looks ultra clean, sterile and boring and people with no taste prefer it and think themselves geniuses for creating the tech in the first place. Good job hollywood.
