You mean to have a credit rating?

Not necessarily. From what I understand, things like Columbia House and such affect credit ratings. You could pay with those by check or whatever, if so desired.

OK. Let's say you've made quite a few transactions in the past through the mail. Not by check, but by money orders you bought from the post office. With only an address and a name, wouldn't they still need your social security number to verify the person who's mailing them a payment is the person they claim to be?
 
For beginning credit, I'd say just get a card with a low balance maximum and decent interest rates... Really anyone can get a credit card in those ranges. Then just buy things you actually have the cash for. That way you can pay them off right away and build your credit rating. If you keep this up regularly, you really won't have to pay much interest at all. Will help a lot in the future.
