Bad Boys 3, a.k.a. Bad Boys for Life, has lost director Joe Carnahan.

An insider tells The Hollywood Reporter that the director has left due to scheduling conflicts, but other sources say it was the dreaded "creative differences."

The move is a setback for the project, which has been trying, in fits-and-stops, to get going after years of development. The involvement of Will Smith had forever been a question mark but the actor finally committed and the studio, after shifting several times, had recently set a Nov. 8, 2018 release date. A start date in the fall was being eyed.

Carnahan wasn’t just the director for Bad Boys 3, but had also written the most recent draft of the script. Sources say a director search is already underway and a new writer may be hired as well. The project is a hot ticket because it is considered a go movie.

The project seeks to reteam Smith and Martin Lawrence as Miami detectives who leave a trail of mayhem in their wake as they take down bad guys. The first two installments, released in 1995 and 2003, were directed by Michael Bay.

Carnahan won’t be gathering moss, however. The director, whose recent fare has been on TV shows such as The Blacklist and Katherine Hiegl’s State of Affairs, is actively developing an English-language remake of Indonesian action movie The Raid and wrote the script for the recently-wrapped remake of Death Wish, which was directed by Eli Roth and stars Bruce Willis.

Dude directed THE GREY, which I really, really liked. I feel like that film is an indication of his true potential. He isn't going to realize it directing a third fucking Bad Boys film. He can do better.

I hadn't realised it wasn't Bay doing this... that's disappointing. I want maximum Bay stupidity in a Bad Boys movie.

yah there's no point without him. Has to be Smith/ Bay/ Lawrence

i guess Smith's kids got in the way of him doing this obvious sequel

So does Bay circle back around to this now that he's actually done with Transformers movies? I believe the reason they moved forward without him was due to his commitment to that franchise and not wanting to wait, but here they are.. still waiting.

Bay needs to man the fuck up and direct this. And go absolute balls to the wall with the budget. Make Bad Boys 3 to Bad Boys 2 what Bad Boys 2 is to Bad Boys 1. It would be the most ridiculous movie ever. Please Michael, I beg of you.

Hmm. I didn't realize how much I want a Bad Boys 3 until now. Sucks they lost him. I really like his work.

I like Carnahan but now Bay is done with directing Transformers movies and will now be collecting those exec producer cheques this could be a nice small movie for him to helm.

And checking his IMDB page it has Bad Boys 4 announced for 2019 lol.

I feel like there's a pretty good chance that Bay does it at this point.

(Though I can't lie, a Shane Black-directed Bad Boys 3 would make my year.)

Pretty sure i read Bay was done with Transformers after this last movie.

Fucking get him back for this.

Not bad boys without him!

I wasn't aware that Bay wouldn't be directing it in the first place.

Not expecting much from a Hollywood version of The Raid (even if I didn't love either the original or its sequel anywhere near as much as everyone else seems to), and I expect even less from a Death Wish remake since I already have a very low opinion of the original and consider Eli Roth a hack.
Martin Lawrence must be not be far off Tom Arnold levels of waiting anxiety for the phone to ring for True Lies 2
Things are still looking brighter for the former than the latter at this point. James Cameron is set on only making more Avatar for the rest of his life these days, with the decision to throw his other passion project to the wolves by letting Robert Rodriguez of all people have it saying plenty.

They should seriously get Peter Berg. Dude is basically Bay's better twin, worked with Will Smith before and needed a box office hit after his last 2 films flopping --- which is sad because his last 2 movies were damn good.

AS much as I'd like to see another Bad Boys films I'm sadly not surprised, with all the humming and hawing Smith was doing over this I never really thought that this would go at all never mind with Carnahan or not.

If they can't get Bay to come back I'd just leave the whole venture alone. But this just strikes me as another misfire from Sony who have probably spent tens of millions at this point developing a third Bad Boys film.

It gives him commercial success, which leads him to do projects he likes.

Without Bay I have zero interest in a Bad Boys 3. 2 was incredibly entertaining simply because Bay didn't give a flying fuck.

Biggest new here is that Carnahan wrote an Eli Roth directed remake of Death Wish starring Bruce Willis. And its finished. What?

Was wondering how the hell Carnahan was going to direct this when he has like a half-dozen other fucking movies in development at some point.

That last part. Um, no he didn't... he wrote *a* draft when he was going to direct it with Frank Grillo starring, but that all got dropped when Roth took over. Carnahan also wrote the live action Uncharted screenplay recently, and is going to be working on the upcoming X-Force film too.
