HELENA, Montana (AP) -- Governor's offices in Montana, Nebraska and Idaho received letters Thursday that contained matches rigged to burn when the envelopes were opened, authorities said.
Montana Gov. Judy Martz's office and part of the state Capitol were evacuated when the match ignited and started burning paper. There was no explosion, and no one was hurt.
A similar letter to Idaho Gov. Dirk Kempthorne also ignited when it was opened, State Patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins said. In Nebraska, a match ignited in Gov. Mike Johanns' office, but did not burn the paper.
The letters were postmarked as if they had sent from a maximum-security prison in Ely, Nevada, authorities said. It had not yet been determined if the letters were from an inmate.
Martz said the letter to her office did not name her, but was addressed to the "executive chambers."
The envelopes contained a blank sheet of paper rigged so that a match held inside it would strike when it was removed, authorities said.
The FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were investigating.
This seems funny to me but, if you were there that had to be scary as hell.
