dammit, I started making the topic and then got distracted for 3 minutes doing something else, came back and clicked 'submit'...

Tiger looks good. Lots of interesting new features and some nice upgrades. Hope the trust old G4 can run it well. :) *Eyes a new G5*

I'm really looking forward to this, Automator by itself is amazing. The 29th can't come soon enough! Also core image and core audio sound really nice.

Tiger has got to be the most stupid name for an OS EVER....

Well, it's really OS X 10.4, but the code name of the past few Mac OS versions have been names of the big cats. (Tiger, Jaguar, Panther)

Tiger may not be a great name, but it beats Longhorn imho. :)

The OS is excellent, been part of the test team for months. Its not without its hiccups though. Personally I think its a little early.

I dunno. Longhorn may be fitting. A big, slow, fat/bloated cow which spends much of its life covered with bugs and needs to be constantly treated for viruses but still fed to the American public.

Also, the 29th can't come sooner. It kinda sucks that we have to wait until 6:00pm.

What program do you use to photoshop a picture?
great news. I wonder if apple would give me a discount since i just purchased a pb.

Best thing I've read all day!

Usually if you've bought a Mac within a short time before a new OS release, they cut you a deal on the new OS. I think last time it was $39 to get the new version. Not sure how long the time frame is though. 30 or 45 days I think.

I've read somewhere (take that as a vote of confidence) that Tiger is supposed to be just as compatible with older macs as with newer ones.

It runs fine on REALLY old Macs - G4s with 300 and 400Mhz processors. Might want to increase your RAM, but otherwise it will run. I've seen people talking about it running on G3s, but I don't know about that.

Good news on both the upgrade price and the performance on older Macs. I work at a University that has plenty of nice, shiney new Macs, but a number of older ones as well.

It'll run on G3's, provided they have Firewire.

Hey phoenix, what are some of the best reasons to upgrade in your opinion versus waiting for a bit. I am pretty happy with 10.3 and don't really see anything besides dashboard and automator that appeal to me, but neither of those are "needed" aps.

Thanks

Longhorn's just a codename. It isn't going to carry over to the retail release...

I know that. The "Big Cat" names were code names for Apple as well, but they just happened to stick, so they began to release the final version with the code name still in place.

Eitherway, Tiger still sounds better then Longhorn.

Besides dashboard and automator, I'm looking forward to Safari RSS and QuickTime 7.0 as well. Of course, I'm really looking forward to the additions and upgrade to OS X Server, like the ability to be an Active Directory Domain Server and to lock down privledges further. Some great stuff coming out from Apple.

The computer store on our campus (Florida State University) sold Panther at cost ($30 or $40, don't remember) on the day of release. I am hoping they will do it again for Tiger.

Dashboard is a good selling point. Automator is cool, but will be MUCH better when automator workflows are double clicker instead of having to launch automator all the time. Spotlight is actually very good as is its place in all the new Finder dialogs. Mail is much much better than it used to be. Performance is much improved as is the OpenGL subsystem. There are still some glitches with some of the more funky graphics hardware configuration. To say that XCode has improved would be an extreme understatement.

To be honest, many of the best features IMO are under the covers and you'll see them as developers start kicking the tired on the OS and fiding out that Apple has pretty much left you the keys to the Porsche. There isn't a whole lot that Apple can do in the OS that you can't anymore.

I think that Dashboard is probably the first thing that you'll really notice and you will get an incredible amount of use out of it. Especially some of the productivity plugins that admins, developers, etc. have been building :)

Care to elaborate?

I would, but I fear Apple reprisal :) I'll just say that I wouldn't rush out to install it on day one. Give it a few days so some of the issues surface.

I've been waiting for two...almost three months now for Apple to update the iMac. Think Secret says it's gonna happen this month, and I pray they are right. I'm still on an iBook I got three years ago and I'm ready to get something newer/faster/sexier.

Thanks for the info I'm sure what you speak of will be leaked to the Mac forums soon enough if its major.

Lots of hardcore users will want to install ASAP
As long as its not as bad as the first OS X release many will still install

Apple is always good with software updates to fix the little things :)

Can't wait!

I want to get an iBook, but I'm waiting for Apple to update it like they did the PowerBook a couple of months ago. Still waiting... :(

Doesn't Apple just hand out t-shirts at Apple stores?

I don't know if I'll have the money for TIGER, TIGER OS! However, I want to be inducted into the Mac cult proper so I can rotate my Apple shirt with my Sega Saturn game shirts. :p

I got an ibook the day after their last update in October 04 ... as a now seasoned ibook vet i feel compelled to warn you ... your lovely and sexy little white ibook will be needing regular cleanings :D ... these things attract dirt like no other. You have been warned.

WHO DEY!?
I just saw a 2 hour demonstration of some of the new features. Spotlight is one of the greatest innovations in an OS. The extent to which it works is simply amazing. It is simply awesome.

So Phoenix, I have an eMac sporting a 1ghz G4 and 1 gig of ram. Will Tiger run fast on my machine, or just "well enough"?

Yes it will run just fine on your machine. There are some things that Core Video won't support for your video card (some of the 'over the top' graphical stuff), but yes it will run happily on your config.
