Time for Terri's parents to make some $$$

The parents of Terri Schiavo have authorized a conservative direct-mailing firm to sell a list of their financial supporters, making it likely that thousands of strangers moved by her plight will receive a steady stream of solicitations from anti-abortion and conservative groups.

"These compassionate pro-lifers donated toward Bob Schindler's legal battle to keep Terri's estranged husband from removing the feeding tube from Terri," says a description of the list on the Web site of the firm, Response Unlimited, which is asking $150 a month for 6,000 names and $500 a month for 4,000 e-mail addresses of people who responded last month to an e-mail plea from Ms. Schiavo's father. "These individuals are passionate about the way they value human life, adamantly oppose euthanasia and are pro-life in every sense of the word!"

Privacy experts said the sale of the list was legal and even predictable, if ghoulish.

Terri's estranged husband?

You'd turn your cheek on a spouse too if they ordered you to be put to death.
She turned that cheek multiple times. And then back again. And then drooled a bit. Then she let out a monstrously retarded grin.

According to a few sourced stories, the Schindlers tried to get a big cut of the 1 million dollar malpractice settlement from Michael Schiavo, and that's when the whole relationship between them and their son-in-law went seriously south.

On the other hand, the Schindler clan says that Michael took the cash and ran.

After this latest little revelation, I'm inclined to think that maybe, just maybe, Michael has the right of it. After all, he's been the one busting his hump for fifteen years in what is eminently an unprofitable and painful exercise, whereas the Krazy Khristian Klan has been rather opportunistic as of late. Hmmmm. Michael's had plenty of opportunity to make his bank in the last several years, yet he's stuck with his wife.

Then again, we really SHOULD be used to moneylenders in the temple by NOW, eh?

i hate you for making me laugh. :(

The more I read about 'em, the more I suspect that the Schindlers are your typical keeping-up-with-the-Joneses opportunistic suburban faux-Christians that seem to occupy most of Middle America.

Whatever you may think of their intentions, they have certainly secured themselves a position in faux-heaven for their kindness.

Well in my other post I said CNN.. so it's obvious I'm not singling out any one media news source....

To make hostile, unsympathetic, or indifferent; alienate.

Yeah, that's an interesting word choice alright.

Drinky Crow: The Schindlers claim that they helped to bring the Schiavos down to Florida, and some of the money would help pay them back. Looking back, would this case have so much attention if it had gone through in Pennsylvania or somewhere else?

Did the article say that the Schindlers would actually see any of the money from the sale of that list?

Who cares? Nobody who donated to their daughter's cause should have their info given out to anyone. It's disgusting.

However, that doesn't mean that he can't still fight for Terri's interests.

MSNBC reported on this. Dan Abrams went on for 10 minutes about how despicable he thought this was and how he thought it was funny (i.e. hypocritical) that the Schindlers were accusing Michael of trying to make money off of Terri.

The guy who titled this thread? I'm just wondering if they're actually profiting off of this sale.

Um, where do you think the money is going? Some black hole?

Supposedly, it's going to legal fees, which means it's going to them and a legal battle they chose to fight to the very last. So while they may not come out of this with a positive net balance (profit), they are going to be in a much better financial position when its over than they would have otherwise.

So yes, looks like they profit off it.

Damnit man.

While this whole nightmare is a horrible story, this has given me a terrible case of the giggles in my silent office.

Well he HAS been in a relationship with another woman and has even had kids with her for several years now.

When what he should be doing is making consensual love to his current wife until death do them part. I bet we would see what the christians really thought of her mental capacity if she was getting railed by her husband every night. :ROLLEYES

The dollar amount they wanted a chunk of was actually $300,000 (the ruling was $700,000 "to Terri," which has been piddled away from the trust account set up in her behalf, plus $300,000 to Michael, for "loss of consortium" -- I believe that's the term). They wanted Michael to split it with them.

WTF? I didn't hear about this (SickBoy's post). If Terri's parents demanded a portion of Michael Schivo's earnings on loss of consortium, then I'm seriously wondering just which side is "in it for the money" here. I mean seriously, that coupled with this news about a donee list being sold just sickens me. These people are preaching that they're in this to "save their daughter's life", yet they're not thinking twice about abusing the moment for the "fringe benefits" while Terri is moments from death.

The more I hear about this case, the more I don't like either side of the matter (the Schindlers or the Shrivos). I think that the wrong person is being starved to death here.

The relevant section of the ruling:

In 1992, Michael Schiavo filed an action against the physicians who had been treating Terri Schiavo prior to her cardiact arrest. In late 1992, the case was resolved with a settlement and jury verdict, which resulted in Mr. Schiavo receiving $300,000 as regards his loss of consortium claim and the Guardianship of Theresa Marie Schiavo receiving net funds of $700,000 as regards her damages. Those monies were actually received in February of 1993.

During the period of time following the incident of February 25, 1990 the parties worked together in an attempt to provide the best care possible for Terri Schiavo. On February 14, 1993, this amicable relationship between the parties was severed. While the testimony differs ... it is clear to this court that such severance was predicated upon money and the fact that Mr. Schiavo was unwilling to equally divide his loss of consortium award with Mr. and Mrs. Schindler. The parties have literally not spoken since that date.

Another quote from the ruling that I found interesting (although it wasn't given weight in the ruling):

It is also interesting to note that Mr. Schiavo continues to be the most regular visitor to his wife even though he is criticized for wanting to remove her life support.
