you people have utterly confused meo n 1.01

and if the word's first letter isn't A thats just lame for the way they wrote it then. I don't interpret that any other way that having a first letter of A.

and I've never even heard the term 'skirt' used to reference a person. I had to look that up just to make sure you people weren't full of shit =\

good puzzles shouldn't require any advanced knowledge.

Do I need to have some kind of advanced knowledge in the color spectrum to get 1.03? Or is it another fairly simple puzzle..

wtf@1.02? I got it right, but I don't understand it, and now I feel really stupid. Can someone explain it to me?

-edit-
nevermind, something screwey happened....but I don't think I even got it right.

Well, you need to think of it in a different way. There's nothing grammatically wrong with what they are saying. Its a puzzle for a reason and that reason being that because most people are going to immediately interpret it one way, the true meaning of the question is veiled. That way, it forces you to flex your mind a little bit and seek out other possibilities.

For everyone new to this, don't get too frustrated with the puzzles. This is supposed to be fun, too, but don't think you're behind just because you get stuck. Puzzledonkey is definitely a long-term thing and nobody is going to get through all of the puzzles in a day or two, or even a week. Well, the best of the best *might* be able to get through it in a week, but that doesn't concern 99% of the people who are going to be playing along. The best way to think of it is not really as a contest, but just a fun diversion that exercises your mind a little bit. There's no time limit on it or anything, but the whole project IS designed to provide some of the most challenging puzzles known to man.

That said, it still doesn't come close to the challenge that TimeHunt presented, that was just ungodly. A 3d crossword completely in LATIN with each cube being rotatable? TimeHunt was damn near impossible. I think I only ever solved one puzzle.

OMFG... I just got 1.03 by pure fluke (well, I kinda know how it worked.. but man was it mean as hell in retrospect). What a weird puzzle. :X

I feel like I'm on the verge of getting 1.06 down. I think I've got the idea, but I'm still not getting the *pattern.*

its the not the grammer I'm mad about. Nor am I frustrated because I'm behind. I remember now that I have started (I think) every single puzzle donkey, got pissed off by their type of puzzle, and left in the first round.

I think skirt referring to a person for the whole phonebook aspect is lame. I have never, in my entire life, come across that slang. And I still think not starting with A is lame. I mean there are kind of other options in something say... encyclopedia, but I think that is really really pushing it. And if this is the kind of puzzle that is going to be consistant throughout the whole of puzzle donkey, I want no part of it.

Um. That's nothing to do with the answer (or not the answer I used to get it right). 'Skirt' is sometimes used to refer to a woman (as you can find out here).

Look, I'm just going to say it right now. Because if you put it in its going to be wrong anyway. The answer is NOT phonebook. It has nothing to do with a phonebook. It is not a slang term for a person of any kind.

someone says: looking up woman in phonebook, book doesn't start with A
someone says: almost there
someone says: what other books start with a?
person replies: I thought it didn't start with a?

and thats all I've seen.

He was almost there because he was looking it up in a book. I think someone's trying to be clever with the 'what other books start with a?' line.

And if you don't have time to read it, I'll spoil the ending for you. The zygote did it.

Argh, I'm up to the end of page 2 on my paper, but now I'm stuck on 1.03. Does the side picture have anything to do with it?

Something you look up with, and it begins with 'A'. Let's just say the picture will probably only throw you off.

The actual definition is not important. Read iapetus' hint again. I'll be more blunt in the spoiler:

Phonebook isn't the answer, but it does start with A.

I did that as soon as I thought people were full of crap about skirt being able to mean a woman =\
