Ok it's time to build a new computer. I've been searching about for hardware and would like an extra set of 2 or 50 eyes to look for the best deals. I'm looking the best mobo chip combo for 200 bucks. I have my eye on a few but I'm not sure if anyone else on the board might have a better source for hardware. I'm not sure if I should be looking for a PCIexpress slot or a PCIX slot. Are they the same or are they different standards? I'm also looking for a clear case, already assembled. I've run across a few but they all come in pieces and I have to assemble them at home. I would like not to have to do that. Thanks for the help.

First tragedy, then farce.
getting a chip/mobo with PCIx for 200 dollars... also, graphics cards for PCIx are a bit pricier and harder to find (top shelf ones at least).. If your looking for a budget system I would still go with APG 8x.

I just finished building my fathers new PC.. and just ordered me a SLI PCIx system.. lets see how HL2 handles two 6800 GT's.

Man a 200 buck mobo and chip is budget now a days? Let me ask a new set of questions then. I have a Athlon 64 3400 chip, I don't really but that's the chip I'm leaning toward. What would be a good Mobo to go with it? I'm looking for one with a PCIx slot. Also what's the difference between a 939 pin chip and a non 939 one? Thanks.

i'm trying to price out a cheap system around a athlon 64 3000 s939 and i'm having a hella time doing so. i woulda gone with the new fangled mobos with the pcix but very few of them are available in s939, so i may scale back take agp interface, which also limits my choice of video cards a bit, 9600 rad or 5700 gforce, deciding.

there's a mid range guide on www.anandtech.com. i'm trying to scale that down into my price range, skimping on mobo, vid card and accessories

There are Nforce 4 boards that do not have the extra PCIX slot for videocards, they just have one. The SLI is the deluxe ultra uber i have a huge internet cock boards. If you can wait a few more weeks, right now only 3 or so manufacturers have these boards out. Once supply increases prices will go down. Even the SLI boards are sub 200 now. Just search on dealtime.

a socket 939 Althon 64 3200+ costs 235 dollars at new egg. If you can find a motherboard for negative 35 dollars, let me know. AFAIK, the 939 pin sets (what I just ordered) *should* be the base for the dual core Althons out in a year or two. So, if your looking for future upgradability that would be the way to go...

The socket 734 Athlong 64's are going for about 200 dollars FWIW, where are you seeing these so cheap?

Asus has a new version of there A8V board (a killer socket 939 mobo) with a PCI express slot instead of an AGP slot, but that alone is going to set you back about 160, and you still have the problem of the graphics cards being overpriced for PCIx. PCIx is certainly the future.

so this is what i have for a system under $1k cdn, taxes included! that's under ~$700 in monochromatic green backs.

AMD64 3000 s939 cpu
MSI K8T NEO2-F
1 gig ram pc3200 corsair
ATI 9600 pro 256mb
Seagate SATA 200 gigs for hd
MS keyboard + mouse combo
NEC 3520A DVD writer
antec slk2650 bqe quiet 350w

can go cheaper on the case, and may consider Asus a8v deluxe mobo.
went cheap on the vid card.
no monitor, speakers extra.

comments, suggestions? i figure i'm gonna pick it up soon

$1000cdn is actually over $800US currently. *EDIT: Crap.. just noticed you said 'taxes included'.. yeah, you're right about the $700 then.

That's a pretty good budget setup you put together.. but I wouldn't recommend anything under a R9800 Pro these days.
