Timesplitters 2 (XBOX) worth buying?

I'm interested in this game as I like all lighthearted shooters.. IGN seems to be full of praise for it, but I checked out the screenshots and they looked fugly.. What gives? Is it worth buying?

I think it's quite crap. Starts out fun, but gets more stupid the further you go along. Me and a friend also tried the multiplayer, but we went back to Halo within like 10 minutes.

Doesnt really hold up well against Halo but its OK, the arcade mode got some chuckles out of me.

Great game, but it's not a 'Halo-killer', and was clearly never meant to be. If you're the type of person who uses Halo and Halo 2 as your yardsticks for judging every other FPS out there, then you're liable to find it wanting. It's faster-paced, for one thing, and the emphasis in the single-player game is more on twitch reflex skills and working out the best path through the levels than on playing cat-and-mouse games with three or four 'smart' enemies at a time. The stylized characters and smooth, untextured look to the visuals is also a turnoff for some people (you mentioned that the graphics were 'fugly'; I like that particular look, but clearly not everyone does, and you'll see a lot of that over the course of the game).

On the plus side, the sheer number of multiplayer modes and options is comparable to a game like Unreal Tournament (and the game supports bots in multiplayer, if you care about that sort of thing), and there are a ton of single-player challenges that are not only entertaining in their own right, but unlock content when completed. The time-tripping single-player campaign is kind of disjointed (it skips around history like a Quantum Leap marathon), and nobody'll confuse the narrative with Shakespeare, but it provides a convenient excuse to have the player fight in several different eras, using the native weapons of each time period.

The game's dirt-cheap now, so if you think it might be your thing or are on the fence, I'd say pick it up.

My main problem with it is that it has floaty controls. If you've played Halo or any other good shooter in recent memory, you'll not be able to ignore it. It's also really shallow, though the arcade tests are kind of cool. Basically, it showed a lot of promise that wasn't realized. I'm still sort of optimistic about part 3. It seems very popular with people who haven't played many shooters.

Along with some of us who have been playing them since the Wolf3D days or thereabouts. :)

Sorry, meant that more as "hey, this is a good shooter for people I know who don't really like them" rather than no one who really likes shooting games could like this.

Except for the floaty aiming ;)

No, I rented TS2 on someone's recommendation and was disappointed. As stated before, the controls feel loose, kinda sloppy. I suppose you could get used to them, but I don't think TS2 is worth the trouble. I'd look elsewhere for a light-hearted shooter.

TS2 is really worth owning, and it can be bought really cheap. Like others have said, it's split screen multiplayer is better than Halo, mostly because it includes bots, but it also offers tons of gameplay options. Plus you can make your own maps.

What I really liked about TS2 is all the Arcade challenges. They are loads of fun. The single player is ok, but it can be difficult (TS2 on hard is much more difficult then Halo on Legendary, although this is partly due to the limited checkpoints which can be fustrating). Co-op is also pretty fun, but not as good as Halo (co-op is where Halo 1 really shines).

TS2 gets a lot of hate on GA, but if you check out Gamerankings, you'll see it is the third highest rated console FPS this gen (after Halo and Halo 2).

well, if your yardstick for great multiplayer games is Doom, then yeah. But it certainly lacks the balance and polish of multiplayer Halo.

The sheer amount of modes and options in Timesplitters 2 in multiplayer is amazing, i have yet to see a game that even has half the options + modes from TS2, unless you count mods.

If you take a step back into reality for a second you'll realize that Halo 1 wasn't the holy grail of FPS multiplayer games.

I never said that, nor even implied it. I simply stated that Halo was a more balanced (in terms of weapon balance and map balance) and polished multiplayer experience (which it certainly is). Thanks for setting up the straw man and knocking him down though.

Wow, it's a real love/hate thing.. I wish XBOX Live! also offered free demo downloads so I could try it first :/
Yeah, but I think a lot of the hate is unjustified. People seem to hate it because of the art style (and they probably have never played it), or they tried it out, but didn't play long enough to get used to the controls, which work great once you get used to them (the Metroid Prime Syndrome). The game does move much faster than Halo, and the challenges almost have an Unreal Tournament fell to them (fast pacedwith bots).

It's fun,but as someone said it lacks the polish of something like Halo...basically any weapon can kill anyone from any distance,so ya know...kinda takes the strategy aspect of it and it just becomes a game of who can aim better :P

its utter wank. Stay away from it.

The majority of people who like it are nintendo fans. The game sucks, extremly dissapointing game. One of the worse FPS i've played

I don't mind the art. I played it plenty. The control issue is nothing like the issue with Metroid Prime. Their sloppy, and I suppose you could compensate for it (many obviously do) but some of us don't think the pay off is worth it. The bots are nothing like Unreal quality. It's a simplistic, shallow shooter with charming style choices (ie. monkeys).

May as well chime in with my dislike for the floaty controls - made it hard to aim and worse, the camera would bob up and down as you moved and made me even more nauseous than usual.

The one good thing it has is the body part specific damage animations - shoot the guy in the foot and he hops around.

Lastly, I never made it this far but I remember an IGN video of the level in the old west where you put out a fire by shooting at it. Lighthearted indeed.

Fable's pretty good actually. Although I don't know if I'd use the term "brilliant". Although it could be argued the term has lost a lot of it's power simply because the British have overused it considerably. Though here in the States its usage is near nonexistant, so it carries some weight which is why I wouldn't use it. ;)

Anyhow... TS sucks no matter what anyone thinks of Fable. :lol Anyone who would choose this over the number of vastly superior FPS out there has simply lost touch with reality. And I would agree with the poster above who mentioned that most of the gamers who like this are Nboys who cling to it as it's like the only FPS on their system, so it's all they know. ;) ;) ;)

:lol

See though, he's Euro... so the term brilliant doesn't mean anything. It's like a filler word. They have to put it in every sentence or it confuses them. :D

Just curious, what exactly would you consider vastly superior console FPS games? I agree that most PC FPS games are way better than any console FPS (including Halo 2), but most console FPS games suck. The Bond games are way worse than TS2, TS2 is also better than the MOH games. You might have a case with Riddick, but I can't think of anything else.

Like I said above, check out GameRankings. If TS2 really sucked as much as you say, then why did it score so high by so many reviewers (this includes the Xbox version as well, so it isn't just for Nintendo fans).

Edit: I have also been playing FPS since Wolf 3D, and TS2 is one of my favourite games. I admit I don't play the single player story mode much any more, but I still play the challenges and arcade mode a lot. There is so much variety (the western cardboard shootout challenges rock, as does anything with monkeys), and it can be challenging (I still don't have all Platinums on all the challenges).

Way too much hate in here for Timesplitters 2. The single-player missions are better than average for a console FPS, and the multiplayer and challenge missions are where the game truly shines. One of my favorite FPSs, and I've been playing them since Wolfenstein 3D.

Provided that you clean up in the challenge modes and unlock a crapload of levels, modes and characters, this is quite true. But going off a fresh game save, it's limiting.

It's a shooter in the vein of GoldenEye and Perfect Dark, but the game never quite hit the right notes. The lauded multi-player mode is just a shell of what was in PD, and lacks the little touches that that made PD fun. I didn't like the menu system in the game because it was unintuitive. I also found some of the stages eerily similar to PD.

I personally didn't have any problems with the control, but enough people have mentioned it to take it into consideration.

The controls are somewhat dated for systems with dual-analog, but the game was still fun. My friends and I were addicted to it for a month or two. I think it was worth the purchase even though I never even beat the campaign mode. The arcade challenges were really damn fun.
