Count of Concision
Stele said:
You could have said all that in one easily condensed paragraph, and the first time around. How the hell you managed to drag this to Chomsky I don't even care to deduce, but my argument come from two very simple rationales -- most people are not bright, and the largest group of 'not bright' people are the lower class, by design, because they are also the largest group in general. I didn't claim all celebrities are brilliant, but I see more of them than soldier-philosophers.

Fair enough.

More than anything, I took issue with his "'way' more intelligent" comment. He seemed to be saying that, because they are supposedly "so intelligent", all their opinions are necessarily well-founded, which I happen to disagree with in general. I believed he was saying that because of the quote he was responding to.

I wanted to say what Stele said. I'm sorry if you I took issue. I'm not bilingual yet and sometimes I can't find the good words to express my exact thought in English.

My opinion is just as valid as yours but you or I have no merit trying to preach to the masses.

And celebriities' opinions are just as valid as yours. The difference is that since they're public figures, they can't help but have what they say put into the spotlight. Effectively saying that because of that they shouldn't say anything at all is, to put it bluntly, the most unamerican thing imaginable.

Your stance on the issue is also hypocritical to the point that it's borderline satire.

Cooter's just jealous that celebrities can have their voices heard by millions and he can't. I can guarantee that if he was in the same position as the celebrities he loathes he wouldn't be able to shut up about his political opinions; he would jump at the chance to have his opinions actually make difference, because he sure as hell can't stop talking about them here where they are of no consequence at all.

can no bush supporter provided ample justification for their reasons?

I don't support Bush yet... if I embraced the dark side... here are my reasons(note: as said this is from a DARK SIDE perspective):

The cullings, the cullings of the weak, by environmental de-regulation, market de-regulation, more wars, and budget crippling of public services.

The weak have for a long time survived, and prospered, costing us, the fit, a lot of money. But now thanks to a few more wars, their young men will be sent to wars in foreign soil, the survivors virtually sterilized by poisoning from heavy particles of DU. The women, children and old will not fare much better, the environmental deregulation will raise birth defects, cancer rates, and worsen the health of the weak. The services that they so depend, those that affect our wallets(we who're both blessed with knowledge, an incredible intellect, lots of money, and with physical resistance far beyond the average man-long time smoking ancestors with extremely long lifespan-, we who're fit, who're strong.). The deficit, might even grow enough to cause the collapse of the dollar, and bring forth an era of chaos.

These are the reasons, so that the world may be set for more wars, so that ethics are tossed aside and the gov. finances researchers like me. So that the weak are culled, so only the fittest remain. This is the dark side, the end of days for many a weak american, and tax paradise for us, the fit.

So that our president, may bring forth JUDGES WHO WILL CULL THE WEAK FROM THE FIT. Let minors enjoy the death penalty, let appeals go to hell, let us bring a divine interpretation to the constitution. FOR IT IS GOD THAT GIVES THE GOVERNMENT ITS POWER NOT THE VOTERS, NOT AMERICANS... the constitution MUST BE RESTORED, it must allow God's divine law to be brought upon the land. Let us pray, that they bring forth a theocracy, a glorious government with God above all!!!

Bigotry must become the law of the land, those who dissent must go to the next world, torture must be brought back. This is what we need in this new american century!!!

Let the markets deregulate, MONOPOLY is what's best for customers, for americans, competition? who needs that? Why must the strong be kept in check by the laws, when they can so easily wipeout the weak.

Is for capital punishment (death sentence) Isn't that directly against christian core beliefs??? Doesn't that clash his his abortion belifs that every life is precious?

No weak and poor women who can't get decent treatment despite any new anti-abortion laws deserve death, that's what complications are fore, to cull them, and with worse nutrition, and more contaminants there'll be plenty!!!! You see this goes together with capital punishment, and it jibes with his anti-christian beliefs... The rich should not give to those in need, it should be the opposite. Forgiveness is not an option, death is the only choice for all those who're weak.

This is a man who had a born again christian woman put to death in texas even though she had the support of churches, and thousands christian supporters writing bush to save her life and what did he do? He ignored them..

Yes, but we must not forget, some have said he did make fun of her, you see that counts, that's COMPASSION FOR YOU!!!!
Sent our troops into war with the proper armor and weapons?

The poor must go to war, and it ain't to fight... it's to die, that's why we've got heavy toxic stuff like DU out there!!!

The fact that it is unheard of doesn't mean the people are not starving for it. I agree it is idealistic a bit but my belief is that freedom will spread and cannot be contained once the people get a taste of it.

FREEDOM SPREAD?!? NO, they're evaporating right now, thanks to the likes of the patriot, but yes greater degrees of freedom and corruption will be given to those of us with powerful friends. As for Iraq, What we'll give'em is a puppet government, that wont interfere with our rightful expropriation of their oil and associated profits... It's our god given RIGHT to take it!!!

END of darkside perspective. You see though Bush's second term stands to benefit me lots, I've got decency, and human morals, the costs of those benefits(tax cuts, wiping out competition, funding, etc) are just too high.

very loose security system in the United States' air traffic.
That's strange the dozens of interceptions that took place swiftly the prior year would beg to differ.

Who knows what really happened. Maybe their change of protocol during june or july of that year(not sure the exact month, I think it was Rumsfeld who changed it.), was the thing that made it loose. Or maybe it was the many intelligence hi-jacking simulations coincidentially taking place during that day.

And what if we're wrong? What if, all things being equal, the country becomes another theocracy? We'll have another Iran.

Let's hope that doesn't happen, the US is too great a country, too great a beacon of hope to fall so low.(yeah, I know what you mean-iraq-, but I found it appropriate to bring forth my point with this one ;) )

I'm a born-again Christian and I read my Bible almost daily. "Turn the other cheek" has nothing to do with being a pacifist to the point of suicide. Jesus is giving an example of how we should act in our personal relations with other people, even if they hate us. I do not believe he is talking about a nation's defense.

Publicly espousing the use of torture(what was that comment again, was it about ignoring the geneva convention or something like that?), taking liberties away, and waging wars to take what's not rightfully ours in iraq.(coincidentially thanks to the other war they did get what they couldn't get in afghan with the taliban prior, their supposed warning of "a carpet of gold or a carpet of bombs" in early 2001, was quite truthful, and their mobilizing of troops to afghan territory prior to any justification- 9 1 1-, proved to save some time once the tragic but coincidential event took place later on in september, and justified those prior but coincidential mobilization of troops...)

Thankfully at least we dealt with our own intelligence agencies and the investigations appropriately after that tragic event years ago... we promoted those who failed, we stopped investigating the inside traders, and we gave the investigating reluctantly made rigged comittee a budget far far smaller(about a third, I think, after a reluctant budget increase.) to that of the clinton-scandal investigation... pathetic... why was this investigation done reluctantly? why was it rigged? why has Osama stopped being our main concern? after so many coincidences that have benefited this administration, politically, militarily, economically, the victim's families still demand the answers they've been unjustfully denied for so many years. Is a proper well funded independent investigation so much to ask?

Honesty?!?
Just six months had passed... Bush quote, he's not concerned.

the thing that scares me is, for the most part- people DON'T ask these questions. it's plain to see who benefits from 9/11 - but people just take whatever they are told by the bush administration and believe it. although from what i've heard - anyoen who does dare to ask these questions (fancy that - demanding accountability from your government) is labelled 'un-american'.

They're valid but no better than anyone else. Why do they feel the country cares or needs to hear what they have to say? It's not like the media just happens to overhear a celebrity talking and prints it in every newspaper on the market. Certain celebrities seek attention and make a point to tell others their opinion and I think it is egotistical and idiotic.

You're not really addressing the core of the issue. You've done a very nice dance around it, though. Again, what makes a celebrity opinion, to use your words, irrelevant? Who the hell are you to decide who gets to speak up and have their opinion count, and who gets told to shut up?

You're right, they don't just overhear. In fact, they ASK.

The answer to the question originally posed in this thread is very simple: cognitive dissonance.

Edit: oh yeah, David Cross also answered this question. He was pretty sure the President would have to eat a live Jewish baby on TV to lose a majority of his support. The scary thing is, I bet there are people out there who you could say, "Hey the President just ate a fucking baby" to and they'd be all "Holy shit that's awful!" but then you'd say "It was a Jewish baby, too" and then they'd say "Well that don't sound too bad, does it Buford? Huh, he's still got mah vote!"

God America fucking sucks.

global test

It's funny that Kerry voted against the first Gulf War when the whole world backed taking action when he now declares that this time wasn't "smart" and hasn't been done the "right" way. Sheesh.

I support Bush because he has resolve. He stands firm in his beliefs. He's for a positive and better world, IMO because of this.

i'm voting for bush because i don't want to see all those stupid kids who clap to stupid lyrics like "when i mean fuck you, i mean fuck bush" and "neofacistcryptic regime" (these are actual parts of lyrics) at concerts have a field day if kerry wins.
