To many RPGs and not enough time, help me!

Over the years my gaming time and decreased substantially, so even a 10+ hour game might take me more than a week to beat, sometimes even more as my brake period between gaming can be nearly a month. I been backlogged since the start of this generation, but the more kickass games keep coming and the more I keep buying, it's some kind of sickness.

The last rpg I beaten was the strategy RPG La Pucelle Tactics, and I didn't even bother getting into the nitty gritty of it since you can well play over 100 hours like that and just beat it in like 36 hours, but that was months ago. My rpg set has grown since then.

As previously stated my gaming time has been limited and since RPG's are the longest things ever, I just haven't had the time lately. I was about to buy Tales of Symphonia and Batios Katien when I concluded to mysef that I even barely got into the RPGs I've gotten so I'm only going to make it worse.

I finally gotten the urge and time to play them, but I like to know what I'm getting into. If you GAF residents would be ever so helpful to give me a clue as to what I should start with. I would like to take the shortest ones first and get those done, but at the same time I don't like to rush and miss the good stuff in an RPG.

This is what I am looking at:

Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana

Breath of Fire: Dragon's Quarter

Disgaea

Fable

Phantom Brave

Suikoden 3

Shadow Hearts: Covanent
(I would really like to play the first one before I dive into this, but I can't find it in stores, how much do I lose just diving in?)

Star Ocean 3

Choices choices.

You wouldn't be missing much if you didn't play the first Shadow Hearts but it can be found new on eBay for ~$25.

Personally, I would tell you to go with Fable first because that can easily be finished within 10 hours if you're only planning on going through it once, then move on to the better RPG's on the list. Atelier is a good, solid RPG experience and Dragon Quarter is sheer brilliance. Disgaea is great as well, especially if you enjoyed La Pucelle. Dragon Quarter can be wrapped up in around 25 hours as well. Covenant is excellent, but I would tell you to play the first one because it's a great game.

Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter
Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana
Suikoden III

The rest, in whatever order pleases you. Thus do I suggest.

Fable can last anywhere between 6 to 25 hours. If you don't get caught up doing anything else you can blast through the game and knock a game off of that list quite quickly.

Don't waste your time with Fable :P It's not that bad of a game but there is so much wasted potential that you're gonna wanna hurt yourself for playing.

I just finished Atelier Iris last night, and that was a lot of fun. The story ain't that great but the characters and their dialogue are cute, graphics are nice, combat is fun (and at points, challenging), and some of the alchemy systems are very cool (although not essential to beating the game). If you like 16 bit style RPGs get this game!

Shadow Hearts:Covenant would be my choice. Fantastic game, probably the best RPG out on PS2. This and Atelier Iris.

Shadow Hearts Covenant! Sucks to Dragon Quarter!

How about this, then:
Fable
Disgaea
Breath of Fire: Dragon's Quarter
Phantom Brave
Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana
Shadow Hearts: Covanent
Suikoden 3
Disgaea

It's not quite shortest first, because I've factored in some other things. The first Disgaea is to beat the game, the second is to run through power-levelling and do some of the optional extras.

Star Ocean 3 was left off the list on the grounds that it sucks. Yes, it was a disappointment to me too, but what can you do?

Ignore the Fable haters: it's short and not that bad at all. As long as you don't expect it to live up to the incredible hype you can't go wrong. And ignore the Breath of Fire haters unless you meet them in person, in which case you should just slap some sense into them.

Suikoden 3 <--- if you only play through 1 character line, its like 25-30ish.
Breath of Fire 5 <--- can be beaten pretty quickly if you do it one time through, 12-20h

So can Fable. <--- can do it under 10

Try trading in or returning Star Ocean 3, you'll have more fun that way.

Maybe it's just me, but this was one of the more craptacular games I've played this gen. It's probably my fault, as I have a general distaste for anime, but by the screenshots I was fooled into thinking it was a sort of throwback to 16-bit RPGs (by its appearance alone) and it was not. I traded it yesterday and breathed a sigh of relief.

I'm actually still catching up on PS1 RPGs (DWVII, Valkyrie Profile, Chrono Cross, etc.) so don't feel bad. :)

Fable is the most inventive and original RPG of this generation. You might want to wait for the Lost Chapters version though.

Agreed.

Play it for yourself and then decide on its quality, i personally would wait for lost chapters. But then i guess you are on a tight shedual.

Fable first then :P

?
Maybe if you don't play much. Fable was a steaming pile. Not even worth the $8 shipping and handling I paid for it.
I'll even admit Dragon Quarter is much more original and unique, and I hate that game.

Well, thanks for the help guys. I', probably going to blaze through Fable since it's so short, I have no real misgivings on it as I pretty much missed the hype on it. I just take it for what it gives me as it looks pretty interesting.

BOF certainly got a lot of support, that would be next on my list. Either Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana or Shadow Hearts diffinately after. Then the stat RPG, I guess Disgaea as that is supposed to be before Phantom Brave. A nice round out with Suikoden 3. No love for Star Ocean 3 huh? I'm going to play that sooner or later, can't let a RPG I have go incomplete.

Looks like hundreds of hours of gaming for me!! Well again, thanks for the suggestion guys.

Oh shit... you don't even want to get me started on my RPG backlog....

I just finished Paper Mario 2 and KOTOR 2.

Ok... you talked me into it:

Star Ocean: Till the End of Time (in progress, currently not playing though)
Baten Kaitos (Playing this now)
Digital Devil Saga
Atelier Iris
Jade Empire
Rivera: The Promised Land
Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
SMT: Nocturne
Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Ys: The Ark of Napishtim

Not to mention non-rpgs like:

Metroid Prime 2
God of War
Zelda: Minish Cap
Zelda: Four Swords Adventures

On pre-order:

Digital Devil Saga 2

Conclusion:

I'm fucking nuts!

I know what you mean, I have a list of RPGs I'm eyeing to get, yet I barely made a dent with the ones I got. Like you said, that's just RPGs, the non RPGs set....I don't know why I do this to myself! All the next gen console may as well be released and I'ill still be busy trying to finish this list.

You guys aren't alone. At last count, I had 100~ RPGs in my backlog, but that was a few months ago...

I don't even want to count 'em up now. :x

Fable isn't worth playing. Star Ocean 3 is pretty good on the other hand but I never got around to finishing it. I kinda lost motivation at some point, but I really enjoyed what I played. Unfortunately, I haven't played the other games. I just can't stomach playing more than one or two RPGs after one another; I just get tired of the genre.

Looks like I'm not the only ones with this problem of buying far too many but not enough play time.

That being said...holy crap! 100+ RPGs?!! That's freakin' insane!!

Heh, now I'm all curious... Think I'll go over my IGN collection list and count 'em up.

I'd like to see that list if possible. I'm in bit of a monetary pinch at the moment, and I want to make sure to mark down RPGs I'd like to get and play one day.

I don't have near 100 rpgs (well, I would if I counted PC games) but my console games collection is 90% rpgs. And I'm one of these persons who take REALLY long time to play even a 40 hr rpg. I think I logged something like 80hrs in my first play through of Tales of Symphonia and then I went back and played it two more times. Love the combat system, kept drawing me back for more.

115?! Geez, even if I'm conservative and let's say if each RPG averages 20 hours it would still take you like 2300 hours or nearly 96 days of straight playing to go through it all! That's nuts!

RevenantKioku, here are a few (US-centric) lists I made awhile back:

PSone RPGs: http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/8483/psone6ae.jpg
PStwo RPGs: http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/2299/pstwo9ez.jpg

Errors that I haven't bothered to fix:
• I forgot "Brigandine: The Legend of Forsena" on the PSOne list.
• I forgot "Dark Angel: Vampire Apocalypse" on the Available Now list for PS2.
• I forgot "Suikoden Tactics" on the Coming Soon list for PS2.

They're also a bit out of date (originally posted 07-10-2005, 08:24 PM), so I'll have to update them sometime. Still, they should help. :)
