To those who were around last console transition...

So what happens to games that get released during the transition? For example, games like Madden or NBA Live, will there be a version for this gen, and one for Xbox2 and possibly PS3 or will they wait until the following year?

Last transition, EA basically wanted to undermine the Dreamcast as quickly as possible, so they never released anything for it. So the Madden's didn't go next-gen until the PS2 actually was released. I think they still released PSOne versions though.

There were PSone versions of sports games during the transition. There was even a lame PSone version of THPS 3.

And they still release Madden on PSOne, at least they did last year, so. It's EA, if it'll sell they'll make it for just about anything, they've got the resources.

EA released Madden 2005 on the PS1. I get the feeling that they'll keep making Madden game for the current generation for many more years.

Activision released THPS 3 on the N64 and THPS 3 and 4 on the PS1.

My question is will someone like EA release Madden 2006 for PS2/Xbox/GC/PC and Xbox2 when it comes out later in November or will they wait until August 2006 to release Madden 2007 on all avilable consoles?

EA will be there as fast as they can; it's what they do. See: Madden 2005 for DS.
