TOCA Race Driver 2006 developer interview at GS

TOCA 2006 Q&A

Some details on the latest installment of this criminally underappreciated racing series. I just started up my 50% complete Xbox TOCA 2 after a long bout of GT4 (40%) and was just reminded of how excellent TOCA 2 remains.

Oh wow, I cannot wait!

It would be so much easier if we just selected a list of 300 random cars from the back of a car magazine and threw them together in a jumbled list, but we do not think this is as much fun for the player as the well-chosen, wide-ranging content that we have in TOCA Race Driver 2006. By focusing on great championships instead of individual cars, we can ensure that the racing is always close and always fun.

Nice jab

And for all you masochists:
Obviously luck plays a part in whether an engine is going to survive an event--although the way the driver treats the car has a big effect. Impacts on the engine bay are going to affect how well the engine works. Damage to the radiator or repeated over-revving, especially at slow speeds with little airflow over the radiator, will all lead to overheating and can mean retiring to the pits. Dirt from the road can also inhibit the effectiveness of the cooling process. Players that really punish the car will have to keep their fingers crossed that the engine lasts the race.

My keyboard is all sticky now. The best racer of this gen is back!! oh yessssssss

some other features (online and prolly offline too):

- different qualification formulas;
- Warmups;
- fully custimizable championships;
- spectator mode for people joining an ongoing race
- support for 10 players (Xbox prolly more than 12 now);
- all flag rules;
- realistic tire wear and engine failure;
- 30 championships (that's double TOCA2);
- all racing championship cars (no more streat cars)
- 50 real world tracks

even better damage engine...

If you're talking about the image i did post, it's new.
Online play in TOCA2 is good, lag-less. 12 players online on Xbox and 8 players online on PS2 (and full voice chat + buddy list + blablabla, nothing is missing)

TOCA 2006 is now up to 10 players on the PS2, most prolly more again on Xbox.
I doubt Codemaster would provide us with a bad TOCA racing game out of nowhere (though Pro Race Driver was an all time low). You sure definetely look forward to this TOCA 2006...

Looks very nice, they have the f1 license now?? It says Formula One.
I hope they do release an xbox 2 version also (if it's not BC).

Yeah, TOCA Race Driver 2 is my pick for best racer this gen. Only issue I have with it is that you can't save in the championship modes (on XBox anyway), which is just flat out stupid. But other then that it's a first class product. Racing the Aussie V8 Supercars at Bathurst is just a trip. And the big rig racing is fun as hell. I just hope American LeMans racing is represented in some form, which for my money is the best road course racing series in the world today (starts up again this weekend at the 24 hours of Sebring).

And I wanna know how the hell F1 racing is represented when Sony has a five year lock on the full F1 license.

While this sounds like a nice improvement over Toca 2, I really hope they don`t start with yearly rehashed updates like they have with Colin McRae. I also think they should have waited until next-gen with this. I`ll propably still get it though.

Yeah, seeing "TOCA Race Driver 2006" instead of "TOCA Race Driver 3" was surprising. They had a little survey for people who signed up with Code M and it basically came down to those two choices. I chose "3" and thought that would be the overwhelming choice...

But having TRD match CMR with the new "yearly" title may have been priority regardless.
