Today you imagine a world deprived of oil for at least 40 years.

Go ahead, imagine it. What do you think society would be like in your country, or in other countries?

I for one see a newfound respect return for horses and dogs and cats. Feral cats that don't really need constant attention and feeding so long as they take care of the rodent population. You could throw them the odd scrap of meat now and again to keep them around. Also those crazy militia types (Michigan!) that make their own guns and their own bullets will suddenly become a bit more popular. Farming, local agriculture, ruined cities of old and children asking their elders what the fuck are those, and the elders would never answer because they would weep for days long past when the Canyonero roamed the mysterious cragged paths that were once know as highways. It would be a hard world, but those with skill and fortitude can make a living out of it, and have fun in the process; oil-driven lifestyles weren't needed way back when so they'll make it work. It would be the Wild West all over the continent. No condoms of course, unless you raised sheep for the lambskin :p. I wonder if political correctness would survive in such a world... (yes I'm aware that I'm looking through rose-colored glasses which is why--)

Option 2; countries get pissed/desperate and start shooting nuclear arms at everybody else and I go try to catch one before it lands on me, dying in the process.

Option 3; I actually catch the missile...

Option 4; ...And throw it back...

Option 5; ...Only to have it airburst over me and kill me anyway.

Ignoring the other options and putting the first in a realistic light, what do you imagine?

but what are we going to use to lube up our combustion engines... ohhh, yeah.

before we are depraved of oil, the price per barrel of oil will have reached so high that alternative sources of fuel will become more economical and thus we will have already made a switch.

Jesus Christ, dude, there are alternative power sources. It's not like oil is going to completely vanish in a day. "Where the hell did all the gasoline in the world go?! A 'just vinegar' salad?! Oh shit! My patroleum jelly! However will I whack off now?!"

We'll still have electrical power, which means we'll still have running water. Fully electric vehicles. Wind turbines. Water turbines. Solar power. Do you think people are going to lose all of that when oil goes?

Pfft. Your future looks bleak.

The corporations will have finally taken the ball of "renewable energy" not for any philanthropic reason of course, but because thats where the money is. it is basically a two-horse between the bio-fuel producers backed the huge agricultural lobby and hydrgen which is backed primarily by big oil. Drivers world wide have yet to pick a clear winner and it doesnt appear that one will emerge soon.

My vision of an oil-less future.

If we ever run out of oil, air travel is screwed!
Automobiles are progressing toward greener technology, but I don't think planes will for a very long time.
Oil is also used in manufacturing, obviously.

When people think about oil, they tend to only think about automobiles..

The energy solution of the future is nuclear. It's much better to our environment, and much more efficient. The only thing in our way to energy independence is baseless fear.

Besides, with talks of hydrogen, what is going to power the seperation of their bonds in water or whatever we use? Wind power, and solar power, both are too inconsistent and weak to be relied on.

What, electricity comes from magic pixies ??

The majority of the United States' electricity is generated from local Natural Gas. Thats going to run out before the Oil.

You better get that shit sorted fast, or else people are going to die by the bucketload in the coming winters.
