I just bought the newest album of one of my fav trance artists Richi M. I was hoping that he finally would release some quality stuff again after a smash hit album in 1997 (one life to live. That was something!). Oh it's even worse than his last album. Please where is the effort?

Richi M's newest album is not the only disappointment lately. So is Prodigy, Robert Miles, Future Breeze, U96, RMB, Talla2XL, etc the list continues. Even the Dream Dance compilations are crap these days.

Gone is the golden period of 1995-2001 where almost every album or compellation had massive hits on them.

Only decent stuff lately comes from Blank & Jones.

Please come back Dune. Or Astral Projection.

Welcome to the ever evolving world of music. For me, I've moved away from trance years ago, and am currently locked in breakbeat. Good shit.

Yeah, first off, don't bring Robert Miles into it. Secondly, most people got sick of the same crap over and over again with a super saturated trance market that mostly sounded the same. Trance has been dead for a while, sorry man. Move on to something else.

Well Robert Miles hasn't done any Trance for a couple of years, his latest cd's are Industrial, much better IMO.

Considering that the top 3 DJs in DJ mag poll were all trance DJs, some people beg to differ... I just think you're listening to the wrong stuff. Music is ever evolving, especially electronic music. I personally prefer the more progressive trance to come out of today's market.

pfft you know jack. Euro Trance was the shit a couple of years ago. But I guess america just discovered it.

I have been listning to techno in general since Altern8. (1991, the mask hysteria)

The only "trance" that's popular in America is the super cheeseball stuff...Take a listen to the radio, it's obvious that Americans have the worst taste in music :p

well i think even euro trance is cheesy. its just not my kind of electronic music i guess. i mean robert miles, oakenfeld etc arent really good artists IMO. they have some catchy loops, beats etc...but its all too clubby/cheesy. but yeah, if you are into it, i guess it could be construed as great music.

Will start substantiating his hate
There's lots of great trance but it's a mistake to think that great singles translate into great albums.

I've been listening now for months to the Trance channel at www.di.fm and most of the new stuff I hear there is very good. Great place if you're looking for titles of decent tracks to huh.. 'acquire'.

B&J are awesome, everything they touch turns to gold.

I agree about todays trance, all my records are from 95-2001 and is all stuff like Binary Finary and Fly Like An Angel and Matt Darey and Ferry Corsten and the weyhey, its all champagne trance.

yeah downtempo, drum n bass, breakbeats, ethnic fusion...thats what i'm talking about.

Progressive breaks are awesome, my fav genre currently... downtempo is good but D&B is a hit-or-miss for me... anyone recommend any good mix albums? I like the John B type stuff...

This is one of my current favorites, its not a mix album, ie, many different DJs, but i usually dont listen to many mixes anyway and tend to stick to regular albums.
This is a collaboration between Robert Miles and Jazz percussionist Trilok Gurtu. It's very different from the usual Miles stuff obviously.

This is a good mix, Ministry of Sound: Indian Summer. Has some great fusion tracks.

And for fast paced DnB, any Asian Dub Foundation albums. They are all very consistent and good.

Hey nitewulf, I have two questions:

1.) are you checking for "Plug"? It's Luke Vibert's psuedonym when he makes D&B. (but recently he's used the moniker "Amen Andrews" which is fucking a awesome :D)

2.) when you said something about hip-hop with guitar & bass and something in a thread a while ago, were you being facetious? Just curious. 'Cause I answered you!

1) I've never actually heard any of his stuff, i usually listen to fusion DnB, meaning eastern DJs like talvin singh, badmarsh, Midival Punditz, joy etc.

2) yes, i have checked out "the tipping point" by the roots and i liked it a lot, still need to give it an in-depth listen. the jazzamatazz not so much.

That's cool. I still think he'd be right up your alley!

Oooh and The Tipping Point is their weakest effort to date IMO. Check out "Things Fall Apart" or "Do You Want More?!??!?", those are waaaaay better than TTP.

I could take Jazzamatazz or leave it though :) You were looking for examples, and that's all I could think of! There's plenty more where that came from.

But I'm just trying to see if you were trying to come off as like, snooty, since most of hip-hop is sample based. Sampling is an artform in and of itself, though, no matter what any judges say. :|

thats good to know, i'm definitely looking for more stuff like that. i really liked andre 3000s "the love below", probably trendy to say that, but i enjoyed it a lot.

heh, no. for instance i like a lot of timbaland's material, the guy will have a catchy guitar riff repeated on and on. he is a genius when it comes to creating extremely infectious hooks. puff daddy for instance, with the rythm guitars he used in "all about the benjamins", i thought that was a great way to introduce rock elements into hip hop. no matter what ppl say now, some of the stuff he was doing was pretty cool. too bad he became a joke afterwards.

Trance became dance when Roberto Milo became big.

Trance...when it was trance back in the mid-90s was wicked stuff. The only thing that survived the dancey trend was Goa...and maybe hardtrance.

That said Hardcore is the best, ever was and ever will be. It will never die.
