Tom Warren: I've heard from insiders that [Microsoft's own handheld] it's essentially canceled as the company focuses on Xbox's new software platform

Microsoft's own Xbox handheld was reportedly "sidelined" recently, and I've heard from insiders that it's essentially canceled as the company focuses on Xbox's new software platform. I still think we'll see next-gen Xbox hardware from Microsoft, but I also strongly believe we'll see multiple devices from PC makers like Asus that will also be considered next-gen Xbox consoles.
That's because the next-gen Xbox platform is being built in the open, with devices like the ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X. These handhelds seem like a market test for where Microsoft goes next with the combination of Windows and Xbox, and the company's goal to turn any screen into an Xbox.
Over the long term, I think Microsoft will eventually solve this challenge through emulation. Bond created a new team focused on game preservation and forward compatibility in early 2024, but there are technical and licensing hurdles to overcome before original Xbox, Xbox 360, and modern Xbox games can run emulated on a PC.
Until Microsoft is ready with emulation, it's filling the gaps with Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming streaming instead. Microsoft's Xbox app on PC will simply show your recently played games, and then you can just play them — whether it's natively or streaming through the cloud. Microsoft has already done all the important work for cloud saves, so this makes the experience a lot more seamless.

Yes I knew it. Yes I have been telling everyone this! I knew it!

This has kinda been an incredible day.

Alters, Stellar Blade PC, Silent Hill 1. Now Xbox finally.

It's been a good day.

And what happens when the Xbox Ally inevitably fails? lol.

edit: this post sucks ass please ignore it

Uh, read that first part fully.

He believes we'll have next gen Xbox hardware.

Other sources have said MS told rhem
during their show the other day they have a home console coming.

Then that's the end of boxes bearing the Xbox logo.

Xbox simply becomes the name of a Windows PC game store

Long term they may even ditch the brand and change it to "Windows game store"

When you sell $500 hardware (or is the X more expensive now in NA?) to play zero exclusives since 2015, what the fuck is the point of wasting half a G on this kind of a system? Not only were their 1st party suffering for the longest time, offering mediocre titles, but having no exclusives kills the system. If the Xbox was still delivering quality exclusives like the 360, and flaccid phil would be competitive, the Xbox brand wouldn't be where they are at. As for the Gamepass, if i was in charge, i would never put every new game on there, and kill sales. Instead, 6-12 months after release is when i'd want the games to appear on GP. It only makes sense to me, but i guess a multi trillion dollars ain't seeing it.

Multi vendor hardware is a bad idea IMO.

In past gens every once in a while you hear about this strategy. Steam Machines, 3DO, maybe some others. Never succeeds even close.

I understand the concept. Get various makers to make it for cost savings and let them go through the hassles of hardware. But for consoles, I dont see it being a success as gamers want a console from a main maker. Not sub-contracted out with another label. Getting other people to make it will also lead to big price jumps as those companies want to make money off it from the first unit made unless MS wants to subsidize them on every sale.

Are they even "vendors" making these systems?

Can only speak for myself, but I don't think the recipient of stickers counts as a vendor.

Cancelling Xbox ? Isn't this a little bit of a stretch ?

Damn I hope not, I like my Series X...
They won't come and take it from you.
Well, I hope they don't. Imagine Phil and Greenburg turning up at your door with bats.

Stellar Blade doing well on Steam, Switch 2 950k and even PS5 with a bit of a bump.

If it's like Rog Ally X it's a complete joke to call it a console.
Well as the article up top mentions, the app itself is basically the console. The console is just software. In theory, it will just be a green square you click on whatever hardware you want (PC, handheld) and it opens into an Xbox UI and has your library. Or load in other stores on PC.

The big sticking point according to this article is transitioning that older library through emulation or streaming. We're already almost at the point where any hardware will load in a similar looking Xbox UI experience. You're seeing the first steps of it on the Ally X.

All the new hardware was going to be is a PC from the surface team doing the same thing as the 3rd party ones, just made by MS themselves. It just has a Windows big picture mode so you hook it up and play relatively easily, and it integrates your libraries from Steam / GoG / Epic also.

The only actual challenge left is the Xbox console library getting transferred to Windows. It sounds like it may be a messy mixture of Play anywhere, emulation and streaming. We'll see.

I prefer playing on my Series X over my PS5. Knew this was coming, but this isnt as devastating as Sega exiting the market. If MS can figure out how to play the whole Xbox library on PC, along with my steam games, in a console like environment that ties them all together, and easy to use so my wife and kid can play games, then i'm still getting the new Xbox. Gonna wait and see how this plays out.

Multiple sources do point to that( most prominently the discord leak from years past).

Also, wasn't the surface team put in charge of hardware at Xbox.

I fully expect the next ms made Xbox to be a benchmark product for other manufacturers to make their own versions

NOOOOOO.. we need competition...

PS6 will now be $999 and you can't do anything about it
Sony has increasing competition from PC gaming, the moment you can get a half-decent pre-built for a similar price as their console they're dead in the water, so they can't get too greedy with pricing.
Switch 2 being able to do some light AAA gaming will also put some pressure on Sony.

I must say, after the ABK leaks; good.

I bet the acquisition cheerleaders aren't enjoying this crow.
The acquisition cheerleaders if anything underplayed how dire the situation was for MS and how dominant Sony is. Anyone claiming MS was going to be an unstoppable monopoly are the ones with a stream of crows so far down their throat it's coming out their ass at this point. MS abandoned consoles in less than a year and couldn't even survive long enough to implement anything they purchased in a way to affect their console business.
