Fans of Square Enix's Tomb Raider franchise have been patiently waiting for news on the sequel to the 2018 movie reboot, and Lara Croft actress Alicia Vikander has provided a new update. In an interview with Total Film magazine, Vikander discussed the sequel, and her happiness with director Misha Green. Green is the developer and executive producer on HBO's Lovecraft Country, and she and Vikander have apparently hit it off nicely while discussing Tomb Raider 2 over Zoom calls. Both are apparently planning some big action sequences for the new film, which should be exciting to hear for long-time fans of the franchise.

"When the studio first said they were interested in a sequel, I got really excited," Vikander told Total Film. "When Misha was mentioned to me and I saw the work on Lovecraft Country, I was extremely impressed."

"It's so much fun on the Zooms I've had with Misha to finally sit with another woman my own age. I get to talk about big action set pieces and stunts that we want to make. I'm hoping that we get on track and get to do something together."

The first one was one of the best video game based movies that I can remember, in a whole different league than the trash that was the Angelina Jolie series especially. Vikanders casting was perfect. It was a good turn off your brain and enjoy action movie.
God no. I didn’t like the Jolie movies originally, but after the soulless reboot, I went back and appreciated them more for at least being entertaining popcorn flicks.

I couldn’t disagree more, Angelina Jolie was perfect as Lara Croft, I enjoyed Vikander’s movie enough to not get grumpy but it didn’t feel like Tomb Raider, can barely remember anything about it tbh, completely forgettable.

Hopefully this time round she'll escape a napalm explosion or some shit with her clothes melting off as she runs for her life in slow motion.

Clothes coming off is the important thing though. All of them.

Laura was originally this cool character and they had to go and make her realistic. She is supposed to be larger than life.

This movie has fans?
I was hoping people would forget the 2018 Tomb Raider and made another reboot with an actress that is able to look the part even just a little bit.

I think Alicia Vikander is gorgeous and a great actress, but looking at her shooting guns while doing acrobatics and overpowering people twice her size just takes my suspension of disbelief away. She's just not good for physically intense activity, and that's perfectly fine considering she has a friggin' Oscar.

We're living in weird times where Hollywood directors demand all actors playing action heroes to do insane training and body building for a year to look perfectly ripped whenever they take their shirts off or even when their arms can be seen from a T-shirt, but somehow casting Alicia Vikander as an acrobat + free-climber + bow / gun / hand combat specialist is seen as something acceptable and courageous and whatever.

IMO, not picking up Jessica Biel to play Lara Croft throughout the last decade was just malpractice.

Does she do a lot of that in the first film? It's been a while but I don't remember alot of that happening. Alot of running and cycling/riding a bike.

The first movie was ok. I agree with others Vikander looked small and unbelievable in the role, but she was certainly better than Angelina Jolie.
I honestly thought the movie had bombed and was expecting a reboot or just to be relegated to history.

I don’t know the director but lovecraft country the book was terrible, I would never waste my time watching the show after reading that so I have no idea if she is a good choice. Her being associated with that crappy book is not a good sign IMO.

The potential is there, but tonally the reboot movie got it wrong. Took itself way too seriously.

Sit all involved down and make them watch Indiana Jones, The Mummy, and National Treasure. Any film with ancient ruins filled with huge cogs moving 100 ton stonework around needs to be 'tongue in cheek', a fun adventurous romp.

I didn't say it wasn't forgettable. I said it was a good turn off your brain action movie.

The last movie was based on the latest games, and in those games the character isn't a big tough muscle woman.

The movie had this mentality of being grounded in reality that annoyed me. No big supernatural finish. I want my far fetched Laura. The second reboot with Crystal Dynamics really tapped into that.

Alicia Vikander did a good job in Tomb Raider. The movie was okish... but, Tomb Raider 2 needs a better story and better director.

The Jolie movies were honestly fun imo, and I think that Jolie was a way better Lara.
At least based on the actual original character and not the emotional wreck that is the reboot Lara.

Each to their own. I thought the Jolie movies were your typical video game movies - terrible.

The reboot movie wasn't amazing either, but it was a less offensive movie with better acting and better effects etc imo.

The first movie was completely forgettable and not only because a big breasted actress wasn't casted for the lead role. They need to write a better script and have a better cast suited for an action adventure flick. Walton Goggins may be an awesome actor for serious roles, but he didn't exactly fit in Tomb Raider.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tomb Raider star Alicia Vikander provided an update on the status of the new live-action film, which would be a sequel to the 2018 reboot. While Tomb Raider 2 has been in the works since 2019, updates surrounding it have been somewhat few and far between, with the most recent news being that Lovecraft Country's Misha Green is in talks to write and direct. As Vikander put it, she and Green are both excited to work on the project, but it might still be stalled due to the recent behind-the-scenes changes at MGM, the studio behind the film.

"With the MGM and Amazon buyout, I have no clue. Now it's kind of politics," Vikander explained. "I think Misha and I have been ready, so it's kind of in somebody else's hands, to be honest."

"I've been excited to show the world," Vikander teases of Green's vision. "I love what she's done with Lovecraft Country."

The live-action future of Tomb Raider just got a lot more complicated. On Thursday, a report from The Wrap revealed that MGM has now lost the film rights to the video game franchise, after releasing one live-action Tomb Raider movie in 2018. According to their reporting, MGM did not officially greenlight a sequel to the film within the allotted window, which was up until May of this year. This has reportedly now started a bidding war with multiple other movie studios to bid on the property. A Tomb Raider sequel had been in development since 2019, with Alicia Vikander set to return as Lara Croft, and Lovecraft Country and Black Canary's Misha Green in talks to write and direct. Now, The Wrap's reporting indicates that Vikander will not be attached to any future installments.

Honestly I'm kinda glad. Vikander is a good actress but there is such a thing as miscast. Wonder who will play her next:
Emily Blunt? Margo Robbie? Gal Gadot? Ana De Armas? Anya Taylor Joy?
