Tomb Raider PC Performance Thread

http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=134690

We have just made public a new version of the PC version of Tomb Raider, build 1.0.718.4. This patch will be applied by Steam automatically when you next start the game. If your game does not update, please restart the Steam client.

This update addresses a variety of issues that we either found out about shortly before release or immediately after.

Fixes include:

- Addressed some stability and startup issues on machines that have both Intel and NVIDIA graphics hardware.
- Fix for players being unable to progress related to the boat in the beach area.
- Some fixes for crashes on startup and when selecting Options.
- Some small improvements to TressFX hair rendering.
- Fixes for various graphics glitches, including certain effects not being visible in fullscreen mode.
- Fixed a problem that caused some users to not be able to use exclusive fullscreen.
- Added support for separate mouse/gamepad inversion for aiming, as well as support for x-axis inversion.
- Fixes related to the benchmark scene and benchmark mode.
- Various other small fixes.

While we expect this patch to be an improvement for everyone. If you do have trouble with this patch and prefer to stay on the old version we made a Beta available on Steam, Build716.5, that can be used to switch back to the previous version. Please note however that you can only play multiplayer with people that share your version.

We expect further patches to follow fairly soon, addressing further issues we see being brought up by players, and are actively monitoring these and other forums looking for issues.

No mention of tessellation fixes.

TressFX still murders performance in cutscenes on Nvidia though. I guess I'll wait for a new driver and see if they're able to improve performance. I should be able to play without fancy hair, but I just know it's going to bug me during play. Yes, I know I need help :(

I can finally play in exclusive fullscreen mode.. I couldn't before.. performance increased nicely too.. great patch.

Just need a couple more and an updated driver from nvidia and things should be awesome.

Also, the hair collision detection on her shoulders is way better, but it glitches right through the bow and quiver, which makes the improvement kind of pointless :)

The hair looks ten times bether now. One thing that has made it bether is that the hair is now alot more bundled in a ponytail than before.

Ponytail behaves a lot better but it still goes wild when climbing ledges

I didn't realize but this game runs my card about 10C hotter than anything else I have. It's crazy

It'd be pretty difficult to avoid clipping into the weapons.

Yeah, absolutely. It's just that this effect is already very much about improving minute details, so it's more jarring than it usually would be. But this is not really a complaint from me, I love the effect as extra eye candy. I'd rather have it clipping through the weapons than not have it at all.

Yeah, full screen effects are fixed.

Considering on how much water you jump in, that it's raining and Lara gets wet in this game though, tressFX effect is unrealistic somewhat wet hair and all.

The TressFx effect is better, the bug with the Exclusive fullscreen has been fixed and all the light effects are now enabled with this patch.

But with my GTX680, according to benchmark of the title screen, the framerate is still the same.

TressFX definitely looks way better now but the performance hit is too hard to swallow.

Usually I'm perfectly ok with 30fps but I don't think TressFX is worth playing at this framerate when I get a silky smooth 60fps 99% of the time.

Glad to see that's not just me. I can get a constant 30FPS with TressFX in during gameplay but this drops to around 20 or even lower with cutscenes.

Is it some weird LOD thing? Are they applying more shadows perhaps? I wish it was possible to tweak the hair further if so so I wouldn't have to keep just turning it off every time I got to a cutscene.

Bullshit performance even with good AMD-cards. Using a 6870 even without TressFX and tesselation the framerate is far too low considering how it looks. Looks good, but nowhere near THAT good. Does the framerate still dip by half when the camera is up close to lara?

Does anyone else get a black screen during the pre-intro where I guess the ship is sinking? I get video later when I wash up on shore, but the first minute or so is completely black but with sound.
Awesome that they fixed the main issues with the game so fast btw.

Edit:this seems to affect all fmvs in the game. This sucks.

The new patch is awesome lol.

I never noticed I was missing all those screen effects until I ran the game after the patch. The most obvious one was all the blood spurt effects that came when skinning animals or getting injured.

On the other hand, the post processing option is the most obnoxious thing ever, switching it on makes the game even more of a blurry mess, why would anyone want it on lol, the camera blur is too much.

You'll want to protect her indeed lol.

I think the number of simulation points per strand increases as the camera gets closer in, which makes sense.

When did the patch go live? I was playing late last night and I swore I was seeing post effects I hadn't seen before. It's too bad I probably only have an hour or so left in the campaign. Will still go back for some collectibles.

Hair looks more realistic in strong wind, I think. It doesn't flap as erratically as before.

Can someone else with a nvidia card please start a new game. Do you see the fmv intro?

Edit: ok, I think I have tracked down the problem. SSAA turns fmvs black w. the new patch. Switch to FXAA and you will get a picture in fmvs.

Got the new patch, cranked everything up to maximum.. I got the "censor blur" hair and about 10fps. Turned off Tress and got 30fps. Turned down to FXAA, back at 60fps, with everything maxxed out except Tessellation (waiting until they officially announce that they've fixed it before I turn it on).
