Tomb Raider PC Performance Thread

3930k @ 4.6GHz
2x 7970 @ 1100 1500 (13.2 Beta7)

The benchmark runs much lower than gameplay, which doesn't go below ~40 FPS (using FRAPS). I've also noticed the cut-scenes drop in FPS too.

FXAA TressFX everything else max

2x SSAA TressFX everything else max

I have learned that by switching from 2xSSAA to FXAA, turning Level of Detail from Ultra -> Normal, and turning off High Precision I can turn TressFX on with locked 60fps.

This is a grand revelation, indeed.

Whats your specs? About to try this with my 680

Yeah, until you go over the shoulder aiming, then the FPS just plummets.

Nope, dropped to 55 as it was zooming in, and back to 60 when the camera rested in place.

It's just too bad FXAA sucks so badly, but I do like the TressFX. I think SSAA is just bugged because when I turn it on even 2x w/ TressFX the fps goes down to a steady 10-15.

pc patch notes from nixxes

nixxes said:
We have just made public a new version of the PC version of Tomb Raider, build 1.0.717.1. This patch will be applied by Steam automatically when you next start the game. If your game does not update, please restart the Steam client.

This is a first update that addresses a variety of issues that we either found out about shortly before release or immediately after.

Fixes include:

- Addressed some stability issues on machines that have both Intel and Nvidia graphics hardware.
- Various small UI updates.
- Fix for players being unable to progress related to the boat in the beach area.
- Some fixes for crashes on startup and when selecting Options.
- Some improvements to TressFX hair rendering.
- Fixes for various smaller graphics glitches.
- Fixes related to the benchmark scene and benchmark mode.

While we expect this patch to be an improvement for everyone. If you do have trouble with this patch and prefer to stay on the old version we made a Beta available on Steam, Build716.5, that can be used to switch back to the previous version.

We expect further patches to follow fairly soon, addressing further issues we see being brought up by players, and are actively monitoring these and other forums looking for issues.

Even after the patch?

Yeah- running 1920x1080, single 680, i7 3770K here. Hair looks better, but the freezes keep coming. Especially in heavy combat situations. Ultra everything, FXAA, Tres on, etc. Framerate between 22-51FPS.

Sigh. Maybe turn off tesselation for good or something, until the next driver update/patch.

I guess they did the changes to the code of the game nvidia was talking about, they said all the problems on nvidia cards needed to be addressed changing part of the game code as well, it seem its now the waiting game on nvidia new drivers

We have removed this patch again due to issues people are reporting with their profiles being reported as corrupt after installing the patch. This will be investigated before the patch is put live again.

That's... embarrassing.

Goodness..

I really like the tesselation in this game. It's very subtle, and not distracting at all. It just improves the geometric detail of the game, at relatively no cost. The benchmark may disagree with that, but in the actual game the performance hit is very minor.

I can barely tell a difference, and it shuts down the GPU in the HTPC in our house pretty hard (560ti 2GB). I'll try it on the 660ti in the bedroom PC later, because I'm curious since it's been kind of a large dip for such a very, very subtle effect, right now. Which is why I don't really have any qualms playing with it off to prevent crashing since I can't even tell the difference (and I want to play on the TV)

Man, Nixxes really dropped the fucking ball with this one eh? Didnt they do sleeping dogs too? That was an excellent port. No idea how this one got so fucked up. Ive had some weird shadow issues too, in the forest area at the start, the shadows flicker really fast. Its not super annoying as it does it so fast you only really notice it if you stand still but its weird.

Also, despite enjoying a relatively good FPS (30+ w/tressfx on, 50+ w/tressfx off), i got past the first combat area last night int he burnign village and met the guy who has an injured leg, and the second the cutscene ends and you look toward the village/cliffs, i plummeted to 17 FPS.
