Tomb Raider PC Performance Thread

Great I tried out exclusive fullscreen and now it's bad to shit land TressFX performance. Even if I turn exclusive fullscreen off again. RIP good performance lasted for 5 mins.

Edit: Okay, it's fine after a restart. Now let's not touch those settings ever again.

Saw the new patch and beta AMD driver and got excited for the prospect that they may have fixed the crossfire glitch. Ran the benchmark and the hair was still acting buggy as all hell which pissed me off a little bit, but towards the end of the benchmark it fixed itself. I ran it a second time and there were no issues. Changed some graphics settings and ran the benchmark to see the difference in framerate and it start bugging out again until it fixed itself at around the same point in the benchmark and running it again resulted in the hair behaving as it should. Seems like it's sort of fixed? I'm hoping that once I start the game that it will stabilize and not sporadically freak out throughout the game.

Same hair flickering/tressfx shadow issues happening here. It gets even worse if I enable any form of Vsync.

Also still have the same issue where once Lara gets out of the cave and outside things go crazy and I get flickering all over my screen.

So, with the latest game patches and Nvidia drivers, here's my updated result;

Gone down a bit and TressFX still has the same flickering issue on mine.

That doesn't seem right... Is SLI working? Are you receiving normal levels of performance in other games?

It seems fine everywhere else and SLI is enabled, yeah. Maybe the contact hardening shadows mahthingy has a performance hit?

EDIT:

SLI Disabled, TressFX stops flickering and;

Min: 31
Max FPS: 48,6
Avg: 38,6

I turned off tessellation and have everything else cranked and I haven't had a single crash since. Run into a few bugs, including the weird textures one giantbomb got in the quicklook but no crashes and its run quite well too.

Will update but I hope it doesn't break anything.

Btw I just got to the
beach with the boat my pals want to fix
how far is this?

So what do you think? Everything maxed out capped at a non-wavering 30fps

Or slightly reduced visuals with no contact hardening shadows with a variable framerate that dips as low as 30-40 (in Shanty town and other intensive areas) and as high as 60?

Weird. This is my score with my Titan.

Ultimate settings, 2560x1600

My card is OC'd though.

Runs pretty great now it seems, although the hair is still murderous. Skipping TressFX for my first playthrough, just not worth the drops.

Ah, no I wasn't. I forgot about that.

I just ran the benchmark again with 2xSSAA and got

Min: 29.1
Max: 56.3
Avg: 41.3

So it's definitely in the same ballpark with the difference coming down to throttling differences I would imagine.

or you just spiked the numbers ;D

Yeah, probably something like that.

I was kidding :( As I tried to run FXAA after you posted your initial result, to see if they were identical and saw the same discrepancy +- a few percent.

if anyone manages to get sweetfx to work with the new driver and latest patch please let me know, show me the way o_O... no dice for me on 314.21 or 314.14 with the new patch

This has probably already been covered, but just in case, you guys should know that benchmark seems to have fuck all to do with how the game will actually run on your system.

I have a 7970GHZ edition and the benchmark showed me at an average of something like 44fps with everything maxed at 1900x1200. But in the actual game I don't think it ever dropped below 60fps.

I think that's pretty clear, just a generic comparison. It's actually a poor benchmark as it just spins around a single character and that's it.

New driver looking good here. Went from 22/33.1/27.1 min/max/avg on ultimate to 29.1/52.5/39.2. ShampooFX still a major drop though, and is very distracting. Turning it off leaving everything else maxed out I get 58/62.1/60. This is on a 660Ti 2GB.

The game worked good before, but looks even better now. Good job nVidia.

edit: oh yeah, 1080p

*edit* After looking up what hard contact shadowing is I am starting to believe that there is no problem and the only problem was due to my ignorance. This thread explained it enough, I had heard of soft-shadowing before but not hard contact shadowing. Although I think that the effect is to strong or overdone with this new setting.*edit*

Was checking out the new patch and notice the the Ultra shadow setting is broken, although I am unsure if the glitch is only happening on my pc. Is this happening to anyone else?

The problem I am experiencing is that the shadow look worse when using Ultra setting in multiplayer and in singleplayer most of the shadow detail disappears.

AndyBNV - would you happen to know if having a high end, Intel cpu would yield near 100% gpu utilization in all scenes in Tomb Raider? I've noticed that in the more taxing, cpu limited scenes, like Shanty town, gpu utilization is low and the frame rate plummets on my i7 975. I'm just wondering if having a more modern cpu would yield better frame rates and near 100% gpu utilization for these kinds of areas.

I don't know about the specific utilizations of each chip and what have you, but Shanty Town will definitely benefit from a faster CPU. That area is by far the worst performing in the game, a result of the Level of Detail setting, as far as I can tell. If you turn that down for ST you should be fine, and when you move on just crank everything back up again. I had to go from a playable 4K res down to 2560x1440.

How about a Titan? ;) If you were to pair a Titan with a highly overclocked six core Intel cpu, I'm wondering if it's possible to sustain a minimum of 60 fps at 1080p at max or near max settings in Shanty town.

I would love to tell you, but my OS drive decided to suicide ten minutes after I installed my Titans today. Thing works just fine for 2-3 years, then dies the moment I try to apply a ton of supersampling on top of a 4K res *sigh*

Sorry to hear that. :( If you ever do find out, though, let me know. I need my 60 fps and will upgrade my card/cpu so that I can achieve 60 fps. ;)

Well i've got the latest patch and the new beta driver and all was looking good until after 30 minutes i got the dreaded fatal error notice again. :(. So close nvidia so close.

Not seeing 60% improvement on my 680, but there is an improvement. TressFX is still a no-go when trying to maintain 60fps, but I can dial up level of detail and DOF a notch higher. A small improvement that I will gladly take

So I was going back trying to upgrade my bow and skills before I hit the point of no return when I ran into a glitch in Shantytown, now I am stuck and cant continue. Every time I reload the checkpoint, I start at the same glitched location. I reinstalled the game, same problem. Anybody with the PC version have any suggestions? Are there any cheats that will let me fast travel out of this place or am I either going to have to wait until a patch or restart the game?

Found a video on youtube, looks like another guy has the exact same problem.

Do these drivers address the issue of clock speeds being throttled when hitting 70C?

V-Sync off I presume or 120hz monitor?

V-sync off in most cases so I could see the maximum frames the game was trying to render (I set everything to the lowest, and then switched things on one at a time to see what was causing the biggest performance drops.)

Just switching off TressFX will jump it up to 125-135fps peak.

Game runs MUCH smoother for me with a 550 TI, FX4100. I was able to get a smooth 60fps on ultra at 1360x768 and about 30fps with tressfx on. I haven't toyed around with most settings but it's much better now.
