I think Akame ga Kill is pretty close to being a pretty cool show, but there’s a number of things that keeps holding it back and keeping it down in the shit category. First, I’ll start with what I think is good, which is the the few moments that the show recognizes its own insanity and doubles down on it. The best moments of this are the fight on the ship between Bulat and Liver and the last fight between Justice and Mine. While the first fight has some kind of heat going for it with both characters having history together and Bulat looking strong after destroying one of the Three Beasts, I believe is good from more of a comedic standpoint where it relies on both Bulat and Liver constantly trying to one up each other where the fight eventually reaches the ludicrous point of Liver using his own poisoned blood to kill Bulat. It’s super dumb, but entertaining for a fight that happens in the early part of the show, though it’s certainly nothing great.
The last fight between Justice and Mine is easily the best this show comes to being considered “good.” For this show’s standards, there’s significant emotional weight going into the fight as Justice’s bloodlust for...justice and revenge for her master’s death, and Mine’s desire for revenge after seeing her friend get eaten by Justice’s dog, both finally hit their peak. But it’s not just the heat these two have built up, the fight itself is actually very well choreographed with a great flow and sense of motion to the two characters's actions. Regardless of what you think of the quality of each character, the fight perfectly encapsulated each character’s personality as Justice’s weapons throughout the fight became grander in scale and more insane as she went further off the deep end as the fight dragged on (most notably shown by how much crazier her faces would get). Mine on the other hand, as a sniper, continues to mostly keep a cool head no matter what Justice would throw at her. Together, they worked really well with each other to put on a very entertaining fight that had an excellent climax as Justice completely fell off the edge as she blew herself up. Compare this fight with the one we saw between the general and Mine, and it’s obvious to even the casual viewer that there was a massive level of difference in the quality of these two fights.
Unfortunately, ignoring a few details here or there like the good animation and pretty decent artwork, there’s a ton of bad stuff about the show, but most that couldn’t have been fixed with some few revisions. The worst part about the show is easily the tone of the entire show. It’s a show that has a worse case of identity crisis compared to any other anime I might have ever seen. The show just cannot choose if it wants to have a grimdark and edgy theme, or have more of a traditional shounen/harem fanservice theme. It’s gone back and forth so frequently between the two that it’s almost impossible to keep track of all the tone shifts. The show will not hesitate to kill anyone without giving them any kind of proper development, but then they’ll have a long-winded funeral for them, acting like they were a very important character to the team. Then the characters will go back to laughing and have terrible anime jokes two minutes later. It’s so unbearably jarring that there’s an immediate disconnect where the viewers don’t know what they’re supposed to think and it all comes off as very shitty and inconsistent writing. As to how to fix this, the answer would be to stick with one kind of tone, or at least don’t have such an immediate back and forth between the two. If you really want to go the super edgy route, then double down on the grimdark and don’t hesitate to kill any character without giving them proper development, but don’t go around and have significantly long funerals for them acting like they were important characters. I do actually think the show got a bit better about it as they went on as they stopped the super long death/post-death scenes and just moved on with the story, but it still came off as sloppy and by that point, the show has already done it’s damage to the audience. As for the humor, I think dark humor can add a lot to a show that revels in it's own edginess, but Akame ga Kill's humor felt like they ripped the jokes off from a completely different genre of anime and revised it to make the quality of writing much worse for characters we just don't give a shit about.
Another thing the show does terribly is not even attempting to establish the main character, as well, a character. It’s clear from the name of the show that Akame isn’t gonna die anytime soon and they’ve hinted to having some kind of really dark grudge between her and her sister. I actually think that this is a pretty awesome subplot to have for one of your main characters that works in the background while Night Raid is doing their jobs. However, the fact that they have not even attempted to make any kind of character out of Akame is what holds this subplot back from being anything worth mentioning or discussing.
There is no denying that Akame is the most nothing character in the show. There is no personality or development or motivations to give any subtle hint of depth to her character. She has literally 0 reason for being in the show other than being one of Tatsumi’s harem members, and unfortunately, Kurome isn’t much better, even if she is somewhat more of a character than Akame is. They could have had something really cool here to work towards, but unfortunately, no one will care about this grudge or backstory when they don’t even know or care about the two characters involved. The best way to fix this would be to obviously "fix" Akame as a character. And by fix I mean actually making her a character. Giving her something interesting besides being the cool sword girl would’ve gone a long way to making her a more interesting character to follow and make this subplot something worth looking forward to.
We all know the voice acting is terrible, but Akame ga Kill’s dubbing is especially bad even for a Sentai show. Parasyte’s voice acting is hit or miss with the occasional standout performance, but all across the board it’s still significantly better than Akame ga Kill’s voice acting. And it's not just Parasyte, but stuff like TWGOK is still pretty decent on a whole. Sentai shows are notably worse than other dubbing companies, but for the most part, at worst they're still somewhat tolerable. It seems pretty obvious that whoever the voice director was didn’t watch the show or even read more than a line from the script before casting each character. Justice was the standout performance from the crew, but she also had one of the more fun roles to work with and obviously had a bit more freedom compared to other characters. I won’t harp on the VA’s too much since this is a problem more exclusive to the dub of the show and not the quality of the show itself. I also won’t mention some of the more unsavory parts of the manga regarding that certain group, and will just agree with most others in being happy that they were pretty much completely cut from the anime adaptation.
Of course, even assuming the fixes were in place, it wouldn’t make the show anything special. At worst it’d still be pretty bad and at best, it’d be a pretty entertaining show to watch while being a pretty quality show at spots. The show we got is terrible and it's very easy for us all to shit all over, but I don’t think it’s actually far away from being something pretty cool, and I can see why people would actually like it.
