Production company probably didn't want to blow their load early and quickly catch up with the manga by using a ton of filler and really slow pacing. Hasn't really helped though.

yeah idk how they even caught up, they had a hundred episode fillers and they even started this arc off slowly, how in the hell did they catch up? Masashi must have took alot of breaks at the time.

I think they got TOO paranoid about overtaking canon and repeating Filler Hell. So instead of having one long block of filler they've implanted it throughout the series :/

Plus they just do a lot of recaps and longer openings and ending to compensate for the lack of content in the episode. It's not bad on a weekly basis but is a huge pain when marathoning.
