This was a bit different in the 1999 series.

In the first anime, the food they had to make was actually sushi. Part of the test was to figure out what sushi actually was, but Hanzo the ninja, the only one who knew what sushi was, thought out loud about it and everyone overheard. Still the same outcome as here.
