Forget a top 3.

Chris Cornell
Thom Yorke
Freddie Mercury
Matthew Bellamy
Cedric Bixler Zavala
Jeff Buckley

Cornell rocks though. Lately his voice hasn't been so good; I'm not sure if that's because he's getting older or what, but, I'm talking about back in the day. Songs like Fell on Black Days or Zero Chance. This dude is like a hybrid of an opera singer and punk rock.

I think Cornell is every bit as powerful today as yesterday. But that's just me.

My list:

Chris Cornell
Dave Grohl

I don't know who'd be my 3rd pick...Robert Plant? Josh Homme? Freddie Mercury? Bruce Dickinson? Matthew Bellamy?

*shrugs*

I've seen the Foos live, and Dave's voice is decent.
You need to hear the Foo Fighters b-side "A320". Grohl is a damn good vocalist.

I don't get that one bit...he's really not that good. He sounds decent on a record, but he's horrible live.

I've seen them live and he sounded great. I love his screams and I love how he sings. The guy gives me adrenaline rushes.

1. The Singer of The Who
2. Robert Plante (singer of Led Zeppelin)
3. James Hedfield (singer of metallica)

Carey Mercer is probably my favorite singer (outside of folk music) at the moment. Yay to sounding like you're going to crack at any moment.

1) Gavin Hayes of Dredg

2) Maynard

3) Chino Moreno from Deftones

I'm only basing this on bands I've personally seen live. if it was all time, it'd be all stuff like Plant and Freddie. but i can only judge what i've heard in person

If we're talking all-time then,

1. Plant
2. Cornell
3. Mercury

And Diablos, you were talking about how awesome Cornell was back in the day - I agree, it seems his voice got less and less powerful. If you listen to the very early SG albums, his voice is ridiculous. He's probably destroyed his vocal chords singing songs like Beyond and Wheel and New Damage.

In no order, a few of my favorites: Dave Grohl, Chris Cornell, Axl Rose..

I absolutely can't stand Thom Yorke. Radiohead isn't too bad, but as a vocalist, I don't see him being in a top ## list.

Robert Plant is awesome too.

If you want to talk about "new" popular bands, (and please know I'm not talking about best ever, just ones that I enjoy) I've always been a fan of Mark from blink-182. Yeah, I know he's not a great singer but I just really like how his voice sounds. Chester from Linkin Park has an amazing voice too (even if you hate them, you have to admit the guy has a pretty nice voice).

Oh, and 50 Cent.

EDIT: How the hell did I forget Trent Reznor, wtf.

1. Freddie Mercury

Followed, in indeterminate order, by Bowie, Jagger, Axl Rose, and Bono.

There are a few other vocalists who I like for their voices, but not really for their music.

Yeah, the Dredg guy puts on a good show but he is very mellow on stage.

pfft, he spaz's his arms all the time =p
he doesn't move much, but you can so tell he's into it. plus, his voice is insane.

these three new acoustic tracks they put out are too good for words. he has the best live voice EVER. these acoustic tracks solidify this in history.

BUT HE GOT SHOT 9 TIMES

BEST SINGER EVER

It amazes me how 50 Cent continues to make money. There is absolutely no substance to his music whatsoever. NONE. I saw his latest video and I had to turn it off after the first minute and a half, I couldn't stand it.

yes. yes we did.

But I'm sitting here listening to "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen, and it's amazing, his vocal talent. Has there ever been anyone else that can sing just like he did? I don't think so. Not in a rock band at least.

I'm sure Freddie should have been more careful with his sexual needs and whatnot... but it's still such a shame that he died.

Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) is fucking special among the special.

and I forget his name, but the old Anthrax singer was pretty incredible at times ("Cry for the Indiaaaaaaans" ::bangs head:: ) :D

I don't like Megadeth. At all. But he does have a great friggin' voice.

ya no doubt... i know lots of people that don't care for their music (Megadeth) but are flabergasted by his vocal ability. it's just insane.
