Not ALL of their songs... I wouldn't put anything from Machina 1 on there.
But between Gish, Siamese, MCIS, Adore, Machina 2, Pisces, TAFH and various other demos and b-sides, it's WAY TOO HARD to make a top 5 list.

When it comes to my favorite bands, like SP, Radiohead and The White Stripes, I don't like trying to rank their songs. I tried doing it for the Stripes and soon realized I could change those 5 songs at any time really. :p The reason WHY they are my favorite bands, after all, is because their discography is so perfect to me.

That being said, Geek USA is the one song of theirs I never get tired of. So I wouldn't "rank" it but then again, it's my favorite song from Siamese Dream... but the rest don't trail far behind, at all.

I'll try to make some kind of list, but there might be more than 5 :D

Machina 2 is bootleg, but they have it online where you download the tracks from it , legal way. its on billy's site. I understand what you saying, but those 5 tracks that i put up to me is the best. Raindrops + Sunshowers and bodies is the bomb. I luv it.

Peace.

Extremely hard to narrow down to the top five, if that's even possible.

Here's a stab:

1979
Rocket
Thru The Eyes Of Ruby
Mayonaise
Meladori Magpie

Eh, it can't be done, really.

There are too many other songs that could go in their places.

No nononono, Machina 2 is not a bootleg!

The Pumpkins were going to originally have Virgin Records release it and make people pay for it like anything else, but they pissed them off for the last time. So they basically said "fuck it, we're giving it out to the fans for free." They went to some local record shop, and had a guy make 25 copies of Machina 2 on vinyl, then the Pumpkins gave those 25 copies to some fans. The fans were told to distribute it over the Internet. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe Machina 2 is on iTunes. So it remains a free album as a "thank you" to the fans. Even Pitchfork gave it a decent review. :p It also won a best Internet album of the year award, but was never televised because of 9/11, which is totally understandable.

1)1979
2)Cherub Rock
3)Bullet with Butterfly Wings
4)Zero
5)Rhinoceras

Of COURSE I do. But I shall not reveal my identity. Not yet!

Oh :lol My alias over there is legendaryu2k. I'm the one that seems to be, the only one who is concern about darcy. Poor babe, she was a cutey pie. Now, well mickey is evil. I havent seen darcy in 2005 tho, someone was making jokes about how she is dead, but i didnt find that funny.

Anyway, peace.

Oh, that's you?

:lol you're fighting a battle you can't win!

I would still be defending Darcy if she didn't do... whatever the fuck she did... to her FACE

She used to be pretty cute. And hey, they look like a bunch of hippies in that pic, do they not? :lol

I used to post on Netphoria back in 98-99... back when a small group of us had a "revolt"... the N6 I think we were called...

Susperilla the Super Slut, Pumpkin Kid, The Frog Prince, Jen Ever, Soma, PotatoeMasher...

What a weird time... lol... I still have photoshops I made of Aaron Pakula...

If I ever post on a SP mb these days, it's over at blamo, although I stay on the general board... still PotatoeMasher (got the name from the MP boxset before we all had a copy of it! heh)...

edit: holy shit! i just logged into netphoria!... can't believe i'm still a member... and on the second to last page on the members list!... :) that's just crazy

Haha that was you? :lol :lol :lol What were you revolting against anyway, I can't remember.

Check this out...
http://www.spinmagazine.com/spin20extra/2005/09/spin20_courtney/

I was married to Kurt and he had a melodic sense. He also played left-handed and I never really could copy anything that he did. But I could copy things that Billy did, and Billy had done Siamese Dream, which is a lot of songs about me, and I couldn't listen to Siamese Dream at home because my husband would get weird and freaky and jealous about Billy.

She can't copy anything Kurt Cobain did because he was left-handed? :lol

Kurt doesn't even come close to being as good of a guitarist as Billy, I've seen even the most hardcore of Nirvana fans on the old "official" Nirvana fansite who HATE the Pumpkins admit this.

Interesting how he was jealous. Wow. I wonder... if he didn't kill himself, if there would have been some fued between the two of them. I know Heart-Shaped Box is said to be about Billy, and XYU is about Kurt and Courtney's relationship... or also said to be at least.

I don't remember... but we all ended up getting banned before Jen "foof" Ever went and spilled the beans about us flooding the board... She got a moderator spot... Same thing happened with PK (habitual liar... even wrote a fake interview with the pumpkins that Andrew posted on the main page!!! I'd love to find that in the archives)...

Eventually the lot of us were unbanned and ended up spending more time at siva...

crazy...

Netphoria is pretty laid back now.

U2K:

:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol

btw, you've been banned from 32 messageboards? :lol That's awesome!

yeah... i've had a hard time frequenting any sp sites since machina... it's weird--i spent far too much time with it, and the pumpkins are still great... but it used to be different...

i remember when a SNL repeat would come on (esp the cherub rock/today ep) i would honestly get goosebumps.. i mean... wtf? :lol :lol :lol

Billy going all Machina "I'm playing a character" and all that just ruined it for me... that's when the crowd changed and all of a sudden boards were full of "The meaning of machina..." and all that... yikes--just make some Billy Corgan music... I'll have none of this Glass and the Ghost Machines...

Yeah the whole MACHINA MYSTERY OMG was kind of lame, but the music was still good. A good six tracks on Machina and most of Machina 2 kicked ass.

I didn't and still do not pay attention to the Machina Mystery, other than the fact that Corgan played the role of what a lot of the critics made him out to be, and made them into songs. Heavy Metal Machine, Lucky 13, etc. are all songs based on outlandish things that journalists have said about him. I think Lucky 13 inspired Bill O'Reilly to call Billy a satanist on his show, and that's exactly what he wanted :lol

listening to siamese dream right now :)

soma and mayonaise make me misty. and i'd say cherub rock is pretty much perfect.

other than that stupid forced angst shit, melon collie is one of my all time fave albums. amazing stuff.

sometimes i wish billy's god complex was just a joke, though...

I like MCIS, but the following songs should have been replaced by b-sides from TAFH.

Love - this is seriously the band's worst song, I think. Cherry, Set the Ray to Jerry, Pennies, Transformer... all would have been better off on the album instead of this. :p

Take Me Down - it's ok, but should've been a b-side; Believe is the best James song from the MCIS era

Tales of a Scorched Earth - why would you put a "hard" song like this on the album when they did The Aeroplane Flies High and Marquis in Spades? Flood said TAFH is too "heavy metal" for MCIS, yeah right.

Alt.Music.Smash-Pumpkins for life. Fuck Netphoria, they wanted to steal a website I had made that was devoted to Adore before Adore was officially announced.

Subject to change in probably five seconds, but off the top of my head:

1. There it Goes
2. Apathy's Last Kiss
3. Set the Ray to Jerry
4. Mayonaise
5. Thru The Eyes of Ruby

As Diablos said, a pumpkins fan would find this list impossible to make. It really depends on the mood. They have great songs for just about every mood. Today a list of mine would include the following, in no particular order:

Today
Disarm
Mayonaise
For Martha
Wound

I posted on AMSP a bit, but then lost my news account and didn't want to use deja...

What was your website?

#1. Today

then everything else is tied for second.

If they can't all be equal that's the only way to do it. :D

Yeah, Today is the quintessential Pumpkins song. It rocks hard.

Distant Avalon, it was a crappily made little fansite where I compiled all the information on the new album that would become Adore, something like 200+ articles. When Netphoria was in it's early embryonic stage, someone from that blasted site contacted me asking if they could take all the information from my site and not credit me. I told them no and that was that, only to find that they then took EVERYTHING. Granted, they're articles, anyone can take them, but then they went and copied my format, even the little blurbs I came up with on my own.

ANDREW PAKULA STRIKES AGAIN!

eh, he did all sorts of shady stuff... his mb software for the longest time was pirated, and he was breaking the TOS on his ads by having two different ads from the same provider on each page... then i remember just a few years back he asked for money to keep the message boards open...

but back in 2000 he would post pictures of his new fancy schmancy sports car on the frontpage for all to see!...

They copied your articles, your format, and misc. stuff from your site? What a bunch of assholes. You should register for the forums and make a little post about that. I don't want to post at Netphoria anymore. I didn't know Andrew Pakula was such a sleezeball.

I like "There It Goes," but I'm not too crazy about the vocals :\

EDIT: Hey now, this is pretty interesting. http://www.myspace.com/smashingpumpkins

Netphoria is just as bad as the old O-board, I refuse to go there. Pakula is a dick, now granted, he has the right to take all the articles I compiled from various music and entertainment web sites (I did however, type up print articles), as they aren't mine, but he basically ripped my site, only changing the color of it.

It's all in the past, I was 16-17 at the time, I'm now 24 and have more important things to worry about than some silly little AOL-based site I had up years ago.

So the Netphoria front page design is yours? Ha, no kidding.
SUE!

I know it might be silly, but Netphoria will probably end up being the last standing SP fansite (or, if the band gets back together, the last standing ORIGINAL SP fansite)... Blamo might stick around, I dunno though.

That in itself would piss me off. Give credit where it's due, Pakula.

Diablos said:

The front page IS NOT MINE. He just took my site and pasted it over there as some little section of Netphoria. Nothing to get worked up over, plus, it's been long gone from Netphoria for ages now.

Oh, in that case, it's not. Still pretty lame that he did that, but after all these years it's not worth getting pissed off about.

Exactly. I actually don't like Netphoria in general, bad blood between AMSP and them. The whole website theft thing just makes me smile now.

OH INTERNET TAKE ME BACK

http://web.archive.org/web/19970605071905/www.muohio.edu/~carmance/sp/index.htmlx

You guys remember Chris and Shyla's SP page? I worked forever on a copycat site that I never launched...

Back in 97 to have all SP albums shared in streaming realaudio... amazing... I ripped wavs of my favorite songs before I saved enough money to buy the albums...

THAT was the ultimate fan site... I think later Chris redesigned the site after Adore came out and bought a domain... shortly after or before machina, he closed up shop...

Although, Simon Coyle's Burlap Pumpkin Page was the greatest. The Coyle tape will live in infamy forever.

I completely forgot about that one!

Was Dave Asselin involved in that one too? Or did he have his own?

Dave helped with Burlap, but it was primarily Coyle's baby.

Asselin had his own site, which was just his trade list that made everyone insanely jealous.

Moonkids was some fucked up shit.

Hummer, Silverfuck, Rocket, and 2 I can think of the titles of, one from Mellon Collie and on from the bside albium.

Billy Corgan (post-Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness)

He should have died a long time ago...
