No, I'm not blaming religions. Religions are immensely flexible and adaptable. The Christianity of today is barely recognisable from the Christianity of even a few hundred years ago, there are a myriad different sects and schisms all with different interpretations the support a wide host of different things. The same applies to Islam. Religious beliefs and traditions are almost always products of their time and circumstance, and are used as post hoc justifications at best for the vast majority of actions. There are other motivating factors at fault here, if we could address those then religion would have a negligble impact.
