People will say it's disgusting and turn around to say Rockstar should make another Manhunt

They're not really comparable outside of the violence on face value. The context of the games is important.

In Manhunt your character is being blackmailed into killing by a sadistic snuff film director or else his family will die. He's not doing it because he enjoys it. In Manhunt 2 your character was the subject of medical experimentation which has damaged his mind, and the organization responsible for that is trying to hunt him down after he escapes.

In both games, there are people who are actively trying to kill you. As far as I remember, everyone you kill in the games is human trash - skinheads, asylum inmates, gangbangers, rapists, pedophiles, corrupt police, bounty hunters, sadistic paramilitaries.

This is a far cry from the derangement in this game, where the player is the bad guy buying presumably innocent victims off the darknet to torture for their own sick amusement. Yeah, it says in the game description it's to get meds for his schizophrenia, but that's hardly a moral justification anyone would accept.

The Manhunt games work extremely well because you are the victim in the story. You're not really meant to enjoy the violence and horror that's unfolding either, but given the circumstances and the depravity of the people pursuing you, it can also feel a little cathartic without making you feel too dirty. Excellent games.

Almost like folks forgot GTA V had you doing the same thing in the name of national security from a corrupt FIB agent from what I remember.
In GTA the guy is surving the torture
in contrast to this game. A huge difference.

GTA is also a petting zoo compared to this one. There, too, no body parts are cut off or people are dismembered with chainsaws.

"No one is innocent in Tormentor. Every prisoner hides a dark secret, and your job is to make them confess live on the Darknet.

Analyze their notes and emails, uncover their fears, and then drag them to the Torture Chamber. Fire up the cameras, pick the perfect tool, and make them talk."

Well said. I'm not into this, but these pussy ass calls for censorship are disturbing. Nothing that's allowed in passive media should be off limits for interactive media, to think otherwise is to literally believe that literature and film should arbitrarily be allowed to explore much darker and more disturbing areas than interactive media without any reason beyond, "I don't like it." The mindset is nothing more than hypocrisy.

Looks like something where the novelty would wear off quickly

This looks like something that would hold my attention for atleast slightly longer than Succubus and Agony. Agony was maybe 15min, Succubus, maybe 30min. If the torture stuff is very in depth (which it's likely not), then I could see it being entertaining enough. Gameplay shit is not good though obviously.

I'm all for devs trying to push the envelope and even stir up controversy when it comes to gore/violence. Happens in the movie world too.

I'm totally fine with the game existing. More games should push boundaries since that's inherently interesting.

August Underground The Game. I'm in if it doesn't get banned. Agony really sucked though so I doubt this will be anywhere close to good.

Didn't really watch; not to my taste. But fiction is fiction so fill yer boots.

I mean... it's not like there are titties in it or anything so I'm sure it'll be fine.

I can't help but feel embarrassed.

And not because you can't explore a thing like that in a game, both CoD and GTA have done so.

this is just so very try hard and i have empathy for the developers because I don't know if they'll ever get the amount of attention they crave.

inb4 this inevitably gets brought up when there's another mass shooting or something in the US and the media pick up on this title,

Just like splatter and horror movies?
The game isn't hurting anyone.
True, it's not hurting anyone physically. Sure. But come on, that's some really sick shit and it's absolutely nothing like splatter and horror movies.

The SOLE goal of the game is to inflict torture on someone. That's it. It's pretty fucking sick and twisted and comparing it to a horror movie is, well, it's pretty lame.

Like Hostel? Great movie btw

No, it doesn't harm anyone directly, but it does damage the reputation of computer and video games.

If someone goes on a rampage again and has played one of the so-called killer games, it will all fall back on the games.

Buddy gave me a key for the demo. Game is in a really rough state in the demo build. Couldn't even figure out where to go (I guess there's a pathfind aura but I didn't know how to enable it) so I gave up.

I think the most off putting thing for me was that the torturer lair is the stone walled fortress in the hillside/mountains. With wooden boards for walkways, but the main character has two desktop computers that are connected to the internet and knows how to use this privacy focused operating system with darkweb stuff. It just feels like a modder designed the level and the setting feels uninspired.

Meanwhile, the torturer looks like the mummy from the Disney movie under wraps because he no lips.
