Toronto Mayor Supports Renaming Etobicoke Stadium After Racist Crackhead Rob Ford

Toronto Mayor John Tory has come out in support of renaming Centennial Park Stadium in Etobicoke after former mayor Rob Ford.

Ford, who became mayor in 2010, died after a battle with cancer in March 2016 at age 46.

Calls for a permanent Ford memorial cropped up in the days after his death, with Tory responding at the time that he wasn't going to rush any plans.

Centennial Park was quickly raised as a possible memorial, with duelling petitions springing up in favour and against of the Ward 3 park being renamed "Rob Ford Memorial Park."

Fun fact: Proto-Trump aka. Rob Ford was fired from coaching Dante Bosco's football team after calling the predominantly black students that attended it "gang members who came from broken families". That is the man who Tory wants to rename a stadium after.

Call Asians dogs and drop the n-word if old.

This is really gross.

He also called Trudeau a homophobic slur.

Tory pandering to the Ford nation base in an election year. Miller should have run for a third term. Fucking Rob Ford, set the city back decades.

Doug Ford says he is running for mayor again and floated this idea, now it's going to be another thing for his supporters to rage about

Why does he deserve a memorial?

He doesn't. People are just willing to whitewash Ford's racist, sexist history because "well he SAID he'd stick up for the little guy and stop the gravy train despite adding more debt to the city and screwing over public transit".

...
That would not be a wise idea.

Indeed. Which is why it's appalling that anyone would want to name anything after a man who said both of those phrases.

The Ford family are a blight on Canada.

FTFY.

I would bang a hot farmer!
I look forward to people adding a crack pipe if they erect a statue to this piece of shit.

How are these type of people getting elected in Toronto? I don't know Toronto politics, but is the population not really liberal there?

I believe that was a myth that got debunked once the crack video was finally released.

Was it? I thought it was confirmed. Okay, I take it back. He's got enough horrible things he's said without inventing some.

Tory is such a pandering shit

In twenty years all anyone will remember Rob Ford for is the crack smoking. Why would you name anything after such a failure of a municipal leader?

Although Ford Nation is still alive and well in Etobicoke so I guess the legend might be more durable than I'm assuming

Short version: Toronto isn't immune from (white) populism and/or ignorant/racist voters willing to overlook Rob's many racist, sexist remarks because he says he'll cut back on spending...even though he never did.

Rob Ford (crack guy) was the only mayor who got elected that fits the bill, although his brother is running next year so we will see. But Trump was voted as POTUS and he is the closest comparison, so it may be a North American thing.

Conservative Ontario Premier Mike Harris amalgamated Toronto, Etobicoke, North York, East York, Scarborough and York into one city in the 90's which has led to a constant cry from suburban voters/Councillors that they don't want to pay for things that are badly needed in downtown Toronto (like subways and LRTs) because they think everything that doesn't go into their communities is a waste of money.

Did you forget the furniture salesman Mel Lastman? He made a racial joke about Africans that cost the city the 2008 Olympic games.

I just laughed imagining a sports commentator saying "And now we take you live to the Racist Idiot Rob Ford stadium for today's action."

Ford's election has some similarities to Trump, in that he had a strong base fueled by a cult of personality (so-called Ford Nation) and a weak opponent. I feel like the left also split between two candidates, but I might be misremembering that part.

He did shit-talk Trudeau, of course. Calling him a 'fat dick' among other things, but it was never conclusively shown he called him a slur.

What Gawker wrote: “‘Pierre Trudeau was a faggot!’ is the one phrase [said by the off-camera voice that] lodges in my mind.”

What the Star wrote: “Ford nods and bobs on his chair and appears to say, ‘Justin Trudeau’s a fag.’”

What the video shows: First off, they were talking about Justin Trudeau, not his dad. And if anyone used a homophobic slur, it was Ford and not Basso. But where it gets tricky is determining what he actually said; the video is frustratingly inconclusive in this respect. The then-mayor mumbles a word that he could very well have meant to be “faggot,” but he seems too fucked up to properly articulate the consonants. Therefore, it’s difficult to state with any confidence that Ford does or does’t say it. Further confusing things, he follows that up with an observation that the Liberal leader has or is a “fat dick,” waving two fingers on his left hand in an apparent attempt to illustrate the point.

That swine we a blight on the city. The only thing his name should be on its a landfill and even that might be too good for it to be named for Ford.

I always liked Mississauga's Mayor Hazel (for foreigners: it's the city right next door) has her name basically slapped on everything. At least she did a lot of good building up our city...

Rob Ford feels more in memorium and definitely not the best candidate other than sympathies. :/

He panders to anybody he can.

Who actually has the power to rename it? City council or what? Maybe he knows it's not going to happen so he can support it to remove a talking point Doug Ford would have used as a rallying cry.

Still dumb of Tory to say it but we'll see

That's true, but she has also talked about how she regrets making it such a car-focused place with huge wide roads everywhere. Mississauga is really, really non-walkable, even for a suburb.

It's actually kind of crazy crossing the border into Oakville and seeing how much more pleasant it is at the human scale.

he was a terrible human being, an awful mayor, a terrible role model, and so on and so on. why the fuck should anything be named after him in this city?

tory is just pandering to whatever's left of ford nation ahead of next year's election, which doug ford is set to run in.
