Toshiba HD DVD Boosts Storage
May 12, 2005
Toshiba Corp. said it has developed a triple-layer HD DVD-ROM read-only disc with a storage capacity of 45 gigabytes, 50% more than its previously unveiled 30 gigabyte dual-layer disc. Toshiba is promoting HD DVDs as the high-definition successor to the current generation of DVDs. The company is holding talks to unify the next-generation DVD format with that of a group led by Sony Corp., which is promoting a separate DVD format called Blu-ray Disc. The latest development may affect those talks as both sides are trying to gain the upper hand in their efforts to forge a common standard. Toshiba's single-sided new HD DVD-ROM disc can record about 12 hours of high-definition video content on a single disc, the Japanese electronics maker said.
