100,000:1 contrast ratio (no typo, one hundred THOUSAND to ONE)

Black performance <THIRTY TIMES better than the best PDP or LCD screen (0.003cd/m2 for SEDs vs. ~0.1cd/m2 for PDPs or LCDS)

Refining Black Rendering

One of the key attractions of the SED panel is how well it can display black, a capability that leaves many display engineers in awe. The specifications indicate that this performance has been further improved. The current prototype from the pair exhibits a black luminance (an indicator of black display performance) of 0.003cd/m2, a marked improvement from the 0.04cd/m2 level of October 2004.

Normally liquid crystal display (LCD) panels show degraded blacks due to light leakage from the backlight, and plasma display panels (PDP) from pre-discharge emission, making it difficult to reduce black luminance even as low as 0.1cd/m2. A member of Toshiba's staff described the difference: "The black displayed on LCD and PDP panels is a moonlit night, and the black that an SED panel gives is a moonless, starry night."

Scary thing is Carbon Nanotube FEDs will have even better performance that this!!!!

Pilot Production of Toshibas SEDs begin August 1 in Japan and SEDs will arrive in the US next year:

Is that black level better than a CRT, or is the comparison tricky?

Sorry, not too well up on this..

Will they cost more than a car when they arrive? That's the question

What you going to do with the Marantz FP Klee?

Can't wait to hear more on this. :)

Scott Ramirez of Toshiba USA has said these will be "Ferrari" priced and the Toshiba/Canon reps in japan have stated these will be priced around the same price as plasmas so that would put it anywhere from the Fujitsu Plasma price range (at the high end) to the Panny HD Plasma price range (at the low end)

So the first SED will be a 50 inch 1080p product.......the MSRP on a 50 inch Fujitsu (1366 x 768 native resolution) P50XHA40US is $7500 but you can get it on the street for about $6100......my Panny TH-50PX25U/P (which is also a 1366 x768 res display) cost me 4 grand and has Picture Quality that is 85% as good as the Fujitsu, IMO....

The *real* popular HD plasmas are the Panny TH-XXXHD7UY-series and you can get a Panny TH-50PHD7UY 50-inch plasma for ~3100 street....sometimes even less....they are a real steal...

And, of course, with each generation, PQ goes up and MSRP goes down so in 2006 Toshiba will be competing against $5000 Fujitsus and $2300 Pannys...

Furthermore, 2007 should bring us FEDs based on Carbon Nanotubes (there is a big race between Samsung, Motorola, and Hitachi to hit the market first with CNT FEDs) and these displays will be of even higher Picture quality than SEDs, and, with so much competition between each other and Toshiba, should be the cheapest of the bunch, even at launch...

Although I am quite curious about Toshibas SEDs which will be the first Field Emission Displays ever to hit the market......Carbon Nanotube FEDs will mark the time when the HD rubber hits the road.....these things should revolutionize the market once they hit....Toshiba SEDs will be a sneek preview of these...

Depending on what is available, CNT FEDs may replace every TV in my house since they can range in size from under 10-inches diagonal to over 100 inches diagonal and every size in between....

Samsung claim they are working on Diamondvision-like location-based CNT displays that could be fifty feet wide or larger...

Sorry, not too well up on this..

Well, when CRTs display their darkest form of blacks, the CRT is not emitting any light at all....it shuts it off....

As you might know, Field Emission Displays are very much like CRTs and should also allow the ability to stop the electron or nanotube guns from emitting light in much the same way...

And yes, those SED numbers are comparable with CRTs :)

AND, OF COURSE, MOTOROLA

If they plan to sell these in August, I am surprised I havent seen any solicitations here in Japan.

I am currently look into the 1080p 45" Sharp for an October purchase. What do you think Klee? I can get it for about 3800 USD street price here in Japan, even less in October. Of course, if this Toshiba is as nice as it is being portrayed, I wouldnt mind an extra 500-1000 dollars or so over the price of the Sharp.

What is your recommendation for a 1080p solution under 5000 USD?
