Total War: Medieval III Announced

Right now, the game is in early pre-production, so think about it being years away, rather than months, meaning we're just past the opening stages of its long journey. This phase is about laying the foundations: defining scope, prioritizing features which number in the hundreds at this stage, and shaping how our vision will translate into an unforgettable experience.

We have never talked about one of our games this early on in pre-development before, so it is a very exciting prospect for us, but of course as with anything new, we will have to expect bumps and bruises along the way, so please bear with us whilst we find our rhythm. This is particularly important when we are in the middle of big project milestones as we won't be able to talk much, so we just want to set clear expectations for the instances in which we're busy focusing on the game.

I think that in the live stream they said they were thinking about TW:M3 after they finished M2...
Yeah, sure...they wanted M3, but proceed to do other 10 TW games after M2....

What kind a bulshit is this? Who writes those script for the developers when they came on camera?

The key to making these games good is to lean into what made warhammer good: unique factions with unique units that require different playstyles.

This is at the very top of my personal wish list.

There's not a single thing in development that I want more than this.

They will be using new custom game engine and Mods are the only reason I play and like total war, so hopefully it will be as modding friendly as their past titles. Without mods make their titles an easy pass.

early pre-production? i guess that means, "we are talking about it. here is a $5k live action video to gauge interest"
yeah, see you all in 2032

This really pisses me off, wtf have they been doing for the last 3 years?!

It's so evident that they had some other bullshit game planned that they ditched and now have moved to Medieval 3.

I'm longing for Medieval 3 but it's so irritating that we'll have to wait at least 4 years for this.

I really liked both Medieval, Medieval 2 is my most played Total War game so I psyched. I should give TWH3 another shot but I don't want to be at my monitor after a day of work.

Total War (especially Medieval II) and Like a Dragon are my favourite series so I'm going to gradually be watching all these videos and writing down summaries for other Total War fans, and adding more as they come out with more :].

- Medieval III will be made with a new engine, the Warcore engine.
- The start date is planned to be 1140 AD, and the game's intended to represent around 300 years. The map's real world scope is intended to be comparable to Attila, but with more detail, more regions etc. enabled by the power of the newer tech.
- Moving away from the Rome 2 etc. Province system towards single regions having an administrative centre and rural developments, more similar to Empire's system, but more polished and expanded.
- The map appears to show a Shieldwall mod/Victoria 3 type of population system where the population number per region is divided into nobles, townsfolk and peasants. Each region also appears to have an amount of food, regional wealth, and income, similar to Shogun 2 etc.
- You can choose where exactly on the map to construct certain buildings like castles and ports.
- Moving away from a hard cap on number of buildings per region, again back towards something more similar to what earlier games had. Also, instead of branching building development paths, you can apply "perks" to buildings, with the number of perks appearing to be intertwined with overall region development. The idea is that, within your overall perk point limit, you can get all of the different path benefits at once, on specific buildings, within your overall perk point limit.
- Different buildings and perks will have an impact on the makeup of regional populations.
- Also, region governors seem to be back.
- For the first time in official game mechanics since Rome 1 troops will actually come out of the population numbers, and like in Shieldwall certain types of troops will draw from certain parts of the population.
- Religion and cultural makeup also seem to have an impact on populations.
- Population makeup will also have an impact on stuff like food production, development speed etc., again similar to Shieldwall.
- More detailed, realistic taxation system that can change over time depending on faction and technologies and be affected by population makeup and region wealth.
- Armies have supply trains which are partly drawn from region wealth.

- Generally, increased focus on historical simulation.
- Trying to make battles a bit slower so that strategic decisions matter more.
- Closer and more obvious connection between the battle map and where on the campaign map that battle is happening.

Also EviLore EviLore , idunno if you're interested but the Tsardoms Fall of Constantinople mod for Medieval II Total War just come out with version 3.0, which among other things is using the new crazy modding tools that modders have developed to add all kinds of new systems influenced by Crusader Kings. Also there's a lot of new battle maps, most importantly a giant siege map for the main part of Constantinople and Galata across the water. So if you're fighting a battle in Galata or the main part of Constantinople, it uses the same battle map, but the battle takes place on different parts of the map. It's probably the greatest historical Total War mod ever made.

My gaming PC is still in storage from when I was in university, otherwise would definitely give it a spin. The history of the Eastern Roman Empire is often overlooked but very interesting in its own right. 1000 year tower defense game irl. Will pull up some gameplay on YouTube. Thanks for mentioning!

Even watching should be fun, they've done amazing work with the UI and the detail on the units is waaay better than the old vanilla game, and they chose some really nice music, like this for instance

btw, they've said that Medieval III will be not just PC, but also PS5 and Xbox Series. Idunno how good those other versions will be, and no mods obviously, but still, console warriors will be able to play a Total War game on console for the first time ever :pie_open_mouth:.

I really hope that console versions don't mean that PC copy is going to have a simplified dumb interface Civ 7 style.

I hope not. fwiw they seem to really be taking the time to try to understand what the fans want and what they've said and shown so far sounds and looks pretty good to me, so I'm not too worried about that.

Fingers crossed. I would love to see an expansive Medieval 3 especially if it has proper mod support.

I am looking forward to liberating the Holy Land.
Yeah they aren't going to allow that in modern era. You know this game will be woke right, like almost everything else today, sadly.

I really hope I'm wrong as I have been waiting for a long time for this. The last game I enjoyed from them was the Rome 1 remake. I don't like Warhammer or the stuff with heroes. I loved Rome 1 and medieval 2 back I the day.

Nice, I'd been wanting this feature to return for years now.

While they're at it, can they get rid of auto-replenishment as well? Force the player to put some thought into how they structure their campaigns and move their armies when they can't just plop down in Fortify stance and summon new dudes out their ass.

Have they said anything about whether you'll be able to send a few units around the map without being locked to a general, with very limited numbers of armies overall? That's one of the worst changes from the old games.
