Silly question, but...

How do I get the library from my old comp. and I-Pod onto my new HD and into that HD's now empty ITunes library?

as long as you have the feature "Automatically organise my files" turned off in Itunes, I'm pretty sure you can just drag and drop them from your ipod.... I think....

From Ipod Lounge:

Using Media Center 9 (MC9):

1. Be sure you're in iPod view by selecting the iPod from under "CDs, DVDs & Handhelds"
2. Select the songs you want copied
3. Right-click and select "Copy to PC"
4. Select the directory where you want them copied & click OK.
5. Sit back and wait for the songs to transfer.

Doesn't MC9 cost like 40 bucks? Jesus, you'd think this should be really fucking simple (i.e. answering a dialog box saying "would you like to transfer your 15 gigs of I-Pod songs onto this totally empty new Itunes").

make sure you can see and search for hidden folders and files. Search your iPod for *.mp3 or other filetypes, and drag them over.

2 caveats.

1. You probably need hard drive access mode enabled, your iPod setup software should do this.

2. Unless something's changed since last time I checked, the iPod renames all your files based on ID3 tags, so they might come back with wierd or unwanted nomenclature. But they will be recognizable and changable.

But yeah, I think iTunes will let you drag as well.

Here's what I used:

Using ephPod:

1. Click on Extras > Configuration > Advanced Options
2. You will need to change the naming style in Naming Convention for Copied Songs to whatever your preference is, ex %A - %L\%N - %T.mp3. This would put all of the songs for an album into a directory with the name of the artist and album title, ex. The Beatles - Yellow Submarine/03 - All Together Now.mp3.
3. Create a directory on one of your hard drives for the songs.
4. Select the songs that you want to transfer from your iPod to you computer.
5. Right click on them and select Copy Songs To Directory.
6. Select the directory and click OK.
7. Sit back and wait for the songs to transfer.

I dunno if Windows has this, but you can download "Applescripts." There are a couple for iTunes/iPods that are made for transferring from your iPod to the iTunes music library. You just highlight the songs on your iPod in iTunes and run the script and it takes care of it. It's what I used.

heh i have no problem with my Dell DJ, just drag and drop

The nice part about having an iPod, is when some guy shows you his new MP3 player, if it's not an iPod, it's automatically not as good as yours.

pffffft, no. It may offer some alternate ways to update your iPod outside of library synching, and that may be convenient to you, but if I want some random song right now, I can click one time in the Music Store and that song is in my library properly tagged and filed and on my iPod.

And I've been through Xplay too, but that can't stand up to iTunes either unless you want to do cooky shit like dump songs from your iPod onto your PC on a weekly basis.

So if I just drag-and-drop, will I use all the "times played" "last played" etc. info? Man, I remember way back on my PalmvX if the data/files between the Palm and PC conflicted, it asked you if you wanted the Palm Data to just replace the PC data. I wish this had that feature. :/

I'd just download iPod Liberator and copy stuff 5 files at a time for free. It'll take an hour or so to get it all done, but free's good.

You will lose all the times played info, that stuff is kept by iTunes itself.

Look, if you can't figure out a way to do it with iTunes, just do what I posted at the top. You can do that with no iPod software at all.

Hah. So I assume you've never used a Mac platform before huh? Thats the way it is with Apple; the obvious doesn't exist and the simple becomes REALLY complicated.....

Spoken like one of the clueless. That feature was done to placate the labels in order to get them to sign on with iTunes and iTMS.
