Transformers: Devastation (Platinum Games) - SDCC trailer

I'm still super bummed that we don't get to play as the Decepticons. Playing a game as classic walkman Soundwave with his cassette animals has always been a dream of mine. I'll probably pick this up though.

The artstyle is everything I ever wanted from a Transformer game.. ever. Arena battler? Just a waste. I just think this would have been a better effort as an action adventure game. Transforming into a cool vehicle with no where to go but around the walled off arena? Such wasted potential.

Looks good, although I don't give a shit about the cartoon. I was disappointed with the announcement at first, but now that they're also making Nier 2, I'll gladly be more open towards it.

I'm also disappointed you can't be the deceptions, I always liked them more than the Autobots design and character wise. That said this is a day one for me and I'm hoping its successful enough to warrant a sequel or DLC deception campaigns.

I understand where you're coming from, but... Naa. There's a huge amount of games now that waste space on expansive environments that don't MEAN anything ultimately. No one really remembers the old cartoon for the cool Traversal segments, the driving between wasteland and town, or all the iconic places they visited like "Dam" and "oil refinery"... they remember the action. And this game puts a laser sight on the action.

The Cybertron games gave a good fusion of adventure and mostly gun-focused combat, so with them, I don't feel like I'm missing out on something I haven't seen before.

Mastering combat is enough for some games. Seeing each character with their own unique actions (Small character dodging between legs, big ones attacking with bulk, etc) is a level of refinement I'll gladly trade a few driving segments and a big, but lifeless world and such for. Get this right, then get back to me with the more fleshed out world in a sequel in a few years.

I wanna Play Soundwave and Blaster! Honestly, I think that sounds like sequel-level material, as really doing the minion-summoning justice could be quite a sub-system, worthy of it's own offshoot modes and such.

Between this and Godzilla, that's gaming heaven for 80's kids.

Force Five next please?
Or oldschool GI Joe?
Gatchaman/ Battle of the Planets??

It showed how badass and dangerous Starscream really was. My man wasn't just all scheming, treacherous, and a pretty face.
He had serious skills :)

i wouldnt go that far starscream did get his ass handed to him by galvatron and got killed in 1 blast.

My response is "But Bumblebee doesn't look like that! Why isn't he a VW Beetle?"

They appear to have used the Transformers Classics version of him in this game, which transforms into a more modern compact car.

It's entirely possible that they don't have, or want to spend the money for the vehicle licenses. If you look closely at Sideswipe, he's not 100% Lamborghini either (specifically the headlights).

Also Wheeljack doesn't resemble anything close to a Stratos. It's 100% the Generations version. Kinda disappointing, but maybe we'll have true G1 skins to unlock or something?

Wait... Is it only an arena battler? No story mode or anything? I've been reading up on some comments here and there and people seem to think this.

Hearing Frank Welker and G1 Megatron gets me right in the childhood feels, and ups my interest in this a great deal.

Fridgerator Prime, a transformer mini-fridge. I would buy that in a heartbeat.

I remember Frank said he couldn't replicate his earlier voice of Megatron anymore, but it's good to see him back nonetheless.

lol some of those assets are ripped straight from Legend of Korra

No this is a prime example of how a small budget can hurt a game's visuals.

i don't know, looks like it's on par with most of platinum's games, but of course those were only on last gen hardware.

Shallow gamers.

The bane of mid-tier and indie development since 2006.

shrug

it's the truth, and we all know it. They stick out like a sore thumb in almost all platinum games
Just because the combat is their bread and butter doesn't mean other aspects should be off limits for criticism

I think this game has my favorite graphics ever! I don't care what they are technically but the art style of the bots (and the transforming sound) leave a big, stupid smile on my face.

Here is hoping that the game turns out well.

Where's the video for that IGN SDCC stuff at? I see the screen a few posts above. The video anywhere?

FOUND IT AND GRIIIIMLOCKKKKK

Holy shit at the Grimlock combo.

RAWWWWWWWWWWWWR!

GOTY!!!!!

While the characters look great, obviously, the gameplay itself, the level design and all other graphics looks absolutely boring and flat. Do people really expect a great game here?

Edit: Apparently they are. Huh, didn't expect that.

Umm, so about everything you just quoted... Can we let Platinum make all of the things?

Are we expecting Platinum to deliver a great action game based on a beloved franchise? Hmm.

I expect a bigger, longer Korra, which I'm OK with. I'll hope for something more, and I'd love to see Platinum manage to get some Bayo/MGR/W101-style ridiculous setpieces in there, but even if it's just running down corridors fighting dudes I'll be there day one. Definitely not expecting high review scores, though.

Have you ever played a Platinum game before? They have their duds like Korra but games like Metal Gear Rising and Bayonetta 2 are amazing action games and this has the potential to be great. I mean, it wont be Bayo 2 and it could just be another Korra, but the combat I'm seeing looks much more fun, and there's no point in being pessimistic. At worst, we get a game with really fun combat but lacking environment and enemy variety. And I'd still be down for that.
