For a good time-

Eat a sandwich at IKE's, no where to sit but it's worth it.

Watch the sunset on top of Twin Peaks

Go music shopping at Amoeba records on haight st

Have a drink at Bourbon & Branch

Some people hate fishermens warf, I still love it even after hundreds of visits.

Bay Area GAF, you've done me proud!

I'm so happy to see all these awesome, spot-on suggestions for SF. I've got a bunch of eating places for San Jose to suggest too, but that might be a bit too far to go just to eat.

While in SF you need to go to Mums and get the Shabu Shabu. They have an all you can eat and drink deal. It is so good and such a fun time. Shabu shabu is the thing I miss most about the city now that I dont live there any more.

I am SO going here, I havent had Shabu Shabu since I was in Japan a decade ago!

I moved to San Francisco a few months ago and have been having a blast exploring the city. So with that disclaimer (I'm still new to the city), here's my recommendations on things to do and places to eat that haven't been mentioned yet.

Attractions

- Marin Headlands/Bonita Lighthouse: its an often overlooked scenic drive but undoubtedly one of my favorite places in the city. It's located on the Northwest side of the Golden Gate Bridge. You'll exit the highway as if you're going to Sausalito but instead you'll take a left and climb a large hill. The views of the Golden Gate Bridge are spectacular. If you continue further you'll come upon the Bonita Lighthouse (note that they're currently doing construction on the bridge so it's only open Sat and Sun from 12:30 to 3:30pm). More spectacular views of the bridge and San Francisco.

- Muir Woods/drive along Highway 1 to Stinson Beach: Muir Woods itself is largely a tourist trap. Get there early because parking is incredibly limited. Its cool to see the Redwoods but if parking is already overflowing, I recommend simply skipping it and drive toward the coast, hop on highway 1, and then drive toward Stinson Beach. The scenery of driving along sheer cliffs is amazing and almost equivalent to Big Sur.

- Pacific Heights mansion tour: pretty self-explanatory. If you like architecture, this is the neighborhood to see some amazing houses.

- Baker Beach: located on the Southwest side of the Golden Gate Bridge. It's a short hike down the hill to see another awesome view of the bridge. Its a little secluded so don't be surprised if you see a nudist or two.

Food (I have a gluten allergy so note that these recommendations come from that perspective).

- Zadin: great Vietnamese restaurant in the Castro. Most items on menu are GF. Order the fried calamari.

- Tony's Pizza Napoletana: I know this was mentioned in this thread already but should be mentioned again. Best GF pizza I've ever had.

- Amber India: a little spendy but the food and flavors are worth it.

- Kasa Indian: While Amber is a great place for dinner, Kasa is perfect for lunch. The concept is high quality fast food. They definitely pulled it off.

- Tres Agaves: large bowls of chips/salsa and hand-squeezed margaritas.

- Westfield Shopping Center basement: it's not your normal mall cafetieria. It's a high-end cafeteria with lots of variety and great food.

Dude it's so funny you posted this. My colleagues and I work in the Financial District and we'll hop on Muni to come here. We can each get something great-the Thai place there Coriander is sooooooo good.

- eat at Asia sf in the mission
- drink at Bigfoot lounge on Polk street
- visit thirsty bear and have the golden vanilla beer. The best locally brewed beer

Since you're most likely going to visit Fisherman's Wharf, you should check out the Musée Mécanique at Pier 45. Admission is free.

I used to go to that place all the time when I was a kid and it was below the Cliff House. Besides the really cool older stuff they kept up front, they had some then-current arcade machines in the back. I spent untold hours back there playing X-Men vs. Street Fighter and a few others. Whenever the owner would walk by, he'd give me $2-3 worth of free credits almost without fail. Awesome place, awesome guy. Check it out.

Great suggestions guys, keep them coming.

Do you reckon there is enough to do in San Fran without a car to keep me occupied for 8 days?

Where are the best movie cinemas? Any good music venues to check out, for local bands?

Just know that in San Francisco you can go from good block to bad block really fast, avoid lower market and below Post Street, I see alot of tourists wandering around in the Tenderloin and it's not the best place to be if you are not familiar with the city.

The Tenderloin is not a great neighborhood, but it's not as if you're going to get murdered if you dare step your toe into it. You just have to exercise a little caution. For the record, San Francisco's "theater district" is right next to the Tenderloin.

The thing I would warn any tourists about is taking the F-train when it's packed. They say the streetcars are a goldmine for pickpockets when everyone's crowded in like sardines.

Oh, and this is a little out of the way for anyone visiting San Francisco, but I recommend seeing the Disney Museum in the Presidio. It's awesome.

I have been in SF only two days... Thanks to this thread, I so want to visit it again and spend some more time in there.

Ah, I all in all miss California and the awesome people in there.

When you're at GDC, you will get approached for money, or drugs. Either be prepared with some fresh dollar bills (or loose change), or tell them to move on. I got offered to buy some weed, and some homeless people gave me their usual story. It happens.

El Farolito's, right off of the 24th st Mission BART station.

get their burrito's durr

if you can find a place to make you a California Burrito as well, do that shit. It's just a jam packed burrito with french fries shoved in. Fucking good.

Everyone else has kinda covered everything else although I'd say going bar/club hopping is a lot more fun then eating somewhere.
