I moved to San Francisco a few months ago and have been having a blast exploring the city. So with that disclaimer (I'm still new to the city), here's my recommendations on things to do and places to eat that haven't been mentioned yet.
Attractions
- Marin Headlands/Bonita Lighthouse: its an often overlooked scenic drive but undoubtedly one of my favorite places in the city. It's located on the Northwest side of the Golden Gate Bridge. You'll exit the highway as if you're going to Sausalito but instead you'll take a left and climb a large hill. The views of the Golden Gate Bridge are spectacular. If you continue further you'll come upon the Bonita Lighthouse (note that they're currently doing construction on the bridge so it's only open Sat and Sun from 12:30 to 3:30pm). More spectacular views of the bridge and San Francisco.
- Muir Woods/drive along Highway 1 to Stinson Beach: Muir Woods itself is largely a tourist trap. Get there early because parking is incredibly limited. Its cool to see the Redwoods but if parking is already overflowing, I recommend simply skipping it and drive toward the coast, hop on highway 1, and then drive toward Stinson Beach. The scenery of driving along sheer cliffs is amazing and almost equivalent to Big Sur.
- Pacific Heights mansion tour: pretty self-explanatory. If you like architecture, this is the neighborhood to see some amazing houses.
- Baker Beach: located on the Southwest side of the Golden Gate Bridge. It's a short hike down the hill to see another awesome view of the bridge. Its a little secluded so don't be surprised if you see a nudist or two.
Food (I have a gluten allergy so note that these recommendations come from that perspective).
- Zadin: great Vietnamese restaurant in the Castro. Most items on menu are GF. Order the fried calamari.
- Tony's Pizza Napoletana: I know this was mentioned in this thread already but should be mentioned again. Best GF pizza I've ever had.
- Amber India: a little spendy but the food and flavors are worth it.
- Kasa Indian: While Amber is a great place for dinner, Kasa is perfect for lunch. The concept is high quality fast food. They definitely pulled it off.
- Tres Agaves: large bowls of chips/salsa and hand-squeezed margaritas.
- Westfield Shopping Center basement: it's not your normal mall cafetieria. It's a high-end cafeteria with lots of variety and great food.
