Treyarch kept Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's split-screen quiet

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has split-screen, although you'd be forgiven for not knowing.

The developer, Treyarch, didn't shout about the feature in the run up to the game's release, but now the game's out in the wild, players have of course noticed.

There's split-screen for two in competitive multiplayer, although it's worth noting both players must be signed into PlayStation Network and at least one player must have PlayStation Plus for it to work. Up to four players can play split-screen in zombies mode.

Split-screen even works in Blackout, Black Ops 4's battle royale mode, although performance is pretty rough. I played a match couch co-op with Digital Foundry's Tom Morgan today and he mentioned a significantly lower framerate, graphical issues and a general sluggish feeling compared to the razor sharp default experience. (We finished fourth, thanks for asking.)

Interesting they didn't mention anything about this.

I would assume to avoid the "Well does it run at 60FPS while doing this" type of questions...

But hey, still cool to know someone in the "AAA" gaming is looking out for the couch co-op players!

I can see why they kept it a secret. On Pro here. Low Rez, jaggy, poor framerate. Ok for kids to keep them busy, anyone wanting a crisp COD experience can ignore.

It’s a pity, WW2 splitscreen was perfectly serviceable. Hardly any hit on performance, looked fine, and increased FOV overcame the loss of visibility with half the screen realestate.

Tryarch keeps honking their horn about their engine, to me it’s the weakes COD engine out of the 3. Would love to see a BR mode from the other 2.

I'm even more surprised that they kept theater mode quiet until release. People have been asking for that to come back to the series for years.

I would imagine ww2 wouldn't have looked as good if it was a BR map rather then a small one?

Some performance issues aside, It's pretty crazy that they managed to get Blackout running on split screen. I'll personally never use it, but I'll gladly get those free kills against any and all split screeners.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Split screen in Treyarchs COD's is terrible, I don't know why they're the one revs that do it differently

I personally don't see any hits to resolution quality when playing split screen. It's fantastic, but as I would expect there are performance issues like lagging everytime we die because it always goes to the respawn screen.

I disagree.
