I'll keep this pretty simple. Lately, I've been having trouble actually getting TO sleep. I'll be on the brink of actually sleeping, then in my mind I will hear a loud noise. It'll make my heart jump, my blood run cold, and I wake up COMPLETELY. However, the loud noises...aren't real. I keep wondering "Fuck, did someone kick in my front door, am I crazy, should I just lie here" etc, but it keeps me from about 30-45 minutes of sleep since I can't calm down for a bit.

Any suggestions? This only happens when I'm on the brink of sleep. Maybe it's a dream I'm starting to have, starting early? Maybe I've got an actual issue that's treatable? I just really need the extra sleep! Has anything like this happened to any of you?

Run a fan.

It really helps me fall asleep.

I wish that'd help - I've got two, and they're quite audible. If I tried in pure silence and heard what I heard, I'd die inside.

Checking out the Auditory hallucination link now.

I've dealt with a similar problem. My grandmother has claimed for the longest time that she hears the people above her singing and playing music too loud early in the morning. About 5am to 6am. Its gotten really bad sometimes because she wont listen to anyone when they tell her there is no music playing. We have yet to find a solution and she's hard of hearing to begin with so putting on some white noise in the background like a fan does no good. If you find a solution to your problem in this thread then perhaps it might work in my case too.

Thankfully, the auditory hallucination entry makes an exception to my situation. I was a bit worried I'd need to be locked up and electrified to make any progress. It doesn't happen every night, but usually on nights where I have to try to go to sleep instead of passing out due to lack of energy.

Try getting one of those noise generators, and have it set to white noise. It's good for drowning out other noises and keeping your ears/mind occupied without keeping you awake. I used one a few years back when I had chronic insomnia.

i used to have this issue..i just listen to really boring podcasts as i'm trying to sleep and it's working perfectly

Heh, he's not actually hearing noise, though, it's in his head. If anything, the white noise might exacerbate the problem as our brains often try to pull patterns out of random noise.

Are you on any kind of medication?

No, no medication. Only pill I pop is a multivitamin. Some weeks may go by without anything - then I'll get 10 nights in a row of this shit. It sucks, because I can NOT stop the adrenaline and heart rate. I've never had full-on sleep paralysis but I think it's close. Definitely is exploding head syndrome, and I think it's related to stress.

I kept thinking, "did a helicopter just crash into my apartment? No that's crazy. But what if?"

And then I would get up even though I knew there was nothing and half-halfheartedly check it out. Like you said it's stress. I'm guessing the sound is your blood vessels pumping so close to your ear.

I started taking paxil and it went away.

Smoke pot.

Trying to reduce my paranoia, not add to it. Or is that a wives tale?

Seriously though, that's not my thing, so...out of the question.

Ever since I bought our first house I wake up at the slightest sound. Been at least two years since I've had a decent night's sleep, that was until an unrelated issue landed a prescription for mild muscle relaxers. Out like a light every night.

wow you are all sorts of fucked up

Yeah, unfortunately the only problem I've ever had was when I was younger if I spaced out I would sometimes hear music in my head. However as soon as I started actively trying to listen to it I would snap out of it.

Not sure what the hell was going on there but unfortunately I can't help you. Hasn't happened in a really long time and I kind of miss it...

I think it happened to me once when I was a kid:I was about to sleep and heard a shout.
Also there's the time when you're falling into sleep and suddenly you feel like you're falling for real and wake up!

Usually related to sleeping on your back, much like sleep paralysis. Happens to me too once in a while, usually a sound of a barking dog, doorbell ring, phone ring, or loud thump.

Not to freak you out but this is considered a psychotic symptom. If you are experiencing this ten nights in a row, which I image is a terrible amount of stress and sleep loss, you really should see a doctor. Something persistent as this usually has a pretty clear cause, you just can't see it and need a different, professional, view on the matter.

This happens to me occasionally and I always wondered what it was. Thanks, GAF. I just hope it doesn't get worse as I get older.

The name's got to change though. I don't want to think of that scene from Scanners whenever I try to sleep.

I live in a shitty apartment so that explains most of the annoying noises. I always listen to music or podcasts before sleep nowadays. Also I leave the computer on so the fan noise covers the weird noise coming out of our pipes.

In my old house, my little brother had a vent next to his head when he slept. The breathing noise would travel through the vents to my room (next to his) and come out right beside my bed. I thought it was bad, but exploding head syndrome sounds awful :(

I think I get this sometimes too... Hasn't happened in a while though.

Holy shit, the symptoms are dead on right down to and including the "In some cases an instant flash of what is perceived as video "static" is reported." Weird.

Stress triggers EHS for me, had it bad last summer. Became less stressed, havent had it since. So Id look at things that are going on around you, and see if thats causing it.
