Trump says he called Schumer to broker deal with Dems for ‘a great HealthCare Bill'

Trump tweets today that he called Senate Minority Leader Democrat Chuck Schumer to see if the Democrats and Schumer wants to work with Trump in order to create a healthcare bill: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...&utm_term=.4bab61b111bb&wpisrc=nl_most&wpmm=1

Frustrated by Republican inaction on health care, President Trump tweeted Saturday that he had reached out to the Senate Democratic leader in hopes of brokering a deal for a “great HealthCare Bill.”

Trump said that he had called Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Friday to ask whether Democrats would work with him on health care — and Trump indicated that he had not been entirely rebuffed.

In a Saturday morning tweet, Trump wrote, “I called Chuck Schumer yesterday to see if the Dems want to do a great HealthCare Bill. ObamaCare is badly broken, big premiums. Who knows!”

Schumer responded, saying he was willing to work with Trump to "improve the existing health care system" but not to "repeal and replace" the Affordable Care Act, former president Barack Obama's signature 2010 health-care law.

"The president wanted to make another run at repeal and replace and I told the president that's off the table," Schumer said in a statement. "If he wants to work together to improve the existing health care system, we Democrats are open to his suggestions. A good place to start might be the Alexander-Murray negotiations that would stabilize the system and lower costs."

Schumer was referring to a bipartisan health-care proposal by Sens. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) and Patty Murray (D-Wash.)
.

Trump's outreach to Schumer comes after the president infuriated fellow Republicans by negotiating a deal last month with Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to raise the debt ceiling and fund the government.

Trump's dealings with “Chuck and Nancy,” as he affectionately called them, was seen by some congressional Republicans as an act of betrayal but have earned the president plaudits and framed him as the bipartisan dealmaker he said he would be.

I've never seen Trump supporters get butthurt quite like when he works with Democrats on things. Looking forward to the backlash.

It's sad but I really don't think Trump will ever accept anything but a repeal. This is like the biggest thing Obama did and I don't think he'll be satisfied until he gets rid of it. Democrats should move forward knowing this. Play to his ego, make it seem like this is all about Trump's vision, how this is completely new and different, even if it's the same damn thing but with actually bipartisan support this time.

Thus far I trust 'Chuck and Nancy' to at minimum preserve if not advance democratic policies in all their negotiations with Trump. He is far more desperate than they are for political victories.

Come on Schumer, that is the wrong strategy. I am sure Obama can take it if you tell Trump that you have an awesome Repeal-and-Replace package and replace Obamacare with Universal Health Care.

(Having said that it would be impossible to get that through congress, whereas a repair bill might be possible).

Maybe if they can convince him that it will make Obama look bad if he "fixes Obamacare" he'll accidentally do some good.

Eh, they could just as easily pitch it as doing what Obama couldn't by making the ACA a functional healthcare bill

We might just start a nuclear war with rocket man. Who knows!

We might just round up black people and move them to reservations. Who knows!

I might just eat a bullet because this country is circling the drain. Who knows!

"Re-name Obamacare to Trumpcare and you've got a deal, Chuck."

"Sir, there is no such thing as Obamacare, wait, wait. We do have this thing called the Affordable Care Act that works well."

"Oh, name that Trumpcare and we've got a deal!"

Repackage universal healthcare as "Trumpcare" and he'll sign it. It's not like he's read any of the previous healthcare bills so he won't know what's in it.

Name it the "Donald, your father would be very proud of you" bill and he'll leap over his desk for a pen.

Trump doesn't care what it is as long as Obamacare is repealed and replaced. Goof or bad he doesn't seem to care. So, Repeal and Replace with UHC? Call UHC Trumpcare.

I'd probably fall over from shock and never be able to pick myself back up again if THIS is how we get to UHC. I can't see ANY of the Republicans actually voting with the Democrats for something like that. So yeah, I don't really think the above could actually happen.

Ryan and McConnell would never bring up something Democrats came up with for a vote. Not sure what the goal is here for either Trump or Schumer.

I'm glad to see people here, by and large, aren't worried that Schumer is going to sell out Obamacare to Trump.

You don't want to give leverage to the repeal movement like that.

its not going to be great. Only thing repubs and trump will take is a further insurance monpoly based prop. The dems should not take that bait, but who knows what gets passed under the guise of "bipartisanship"

There were a number of dems open to lowering corp tax "as long as it didn't raise taxes on middle class", what a load of shit.

What we need is single payer and raising taxes to fund a number of programs, and yes that will include raising taxes on middle class marginally and the higher classes moreso. People need to understand that the government needs money to fund shit that helps productivity in the economy for everybody

Why isn't repealing and replacing Obamacare with universal health care on the table? The existing system isn't very good and people will die unnecessarily if it's simply tweaked. You can't do that and expect to have the best system in the world.

Yes!

Whoops forgot:
Isn't Trump a supporter of UHC or am I thinking some other scumbag?
The only things we know about Trump's plan is during various interviews where he said it would be better, cheaper, provide more coverage, and not raise taxes.

So...maybe?

Republicans and Trump himself is why. You had McConnel railing against socialized healthcare with tears in his eyes when skinny repeal failed.

It is on the table, but it's not a possibility. Show me the GoP votes to get it across the finish line. It didn't even have enough Democratic support in Obama's narrow super-majority window to exist as a caveat.

Can't wait to see the GOP and their voter base eat Trump alive for "working with the enemy" on healthcare no less.

Universal healthcare is a goal not a policy.

We should make Medicare an option on the ACA sites.

What we need are politicans who care about efficency and real results over being scared of what the other team will say, and being paid off by insurance companies to fight against real solutions. That requires a spine, debating skills, being able to frame a narrative and good conviction. Something the dem party currently doesn't have(although there are plenty of dems who would support it) and the GOP as the ruling party obviously doesnt believe in from the start.

Single payer federally funded healthcare generally works for most medical procedures up in canada at half the cost, and would cost the US goverment in implementation 32 trillion over 10 years as opposed to 49 trillion like our current system over the next 10 years. It should be an easy sell, but its obviously not so simple to those who are scared for their jobs.

Obamacare was basically a multi-payer UHC at the start. Mandate+Forced Medicaid Expansion+Public Option would've meant nearly everyone covered.

Didn't they already tell him he can call it a repeal as long as it fixes, and doesn't dismantle, ACA? I'm ok with that. Let him put a meaningless point on the board if it means people get to keep and get better healthcare.

Trump: I don’t want a cheeseburger.

Trump: I want a meal that’s a beef patty topped with cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes in between two pieces of bread.

i've been begging for over 5 years.
He wants a win so fucking bad that he honestly doesn't care what it is.

Schumer can really take him for a ride if he plays it right. It's a NO LOSE situation for dems.

Yup.

The SC ruling that states could opt out of the Medicaid expansion fucked up Obamacare's coverage goals hard.

We turned down a deal with Nixon that would have effectively implemented Obamacare 4 decades earlier. Trump is a piece of shit, but you absolutely take what you can get.
