TRUTHFACT: MS having eSRAM yield problems on Xbox One

Does the PS4 have an external power supply? And if not, because of its small size, would this put it at risk of overheating?
Even if it does, I reckon that it's gonna howl like a bitch to get the airflow to keep that sucker cool.
I can hear the apologists now;
"Oh, I dont notice the fans once I crank up the home theatre to 400 decibels"

Internal. Sony have been designing hardware for years, they know a thing or two.

Yeah, most of their stuffs are quite customise layout, like fill up the empty space internal.

I think Xbox One can be smaller if you look at this picture, it look like 1/3 are empty space, and it use less customise layout for the heatsink and drives.

id reckon putting 3 times the jaguar cpu in the cloud should not be so hard?

That would be an understatement. The biggest box currently available on Azure is the equivalent of an unspecified 8-core 1,6 Ghz CPU and costs ~$1470 per month, not accounting for traffic and storage. If we assume that (a) such a box can roughly provide the equivalent of the Jaguar cores of three XB180s (most probably an understatement) and (b) on load spikes, ¼ of the user base of XB180 (let's say ¼ of 5 million in 2013) will be connected to XBL concurrently and, thus, demand 1.250.000 of these VMs concurrently, it would still imply a cost of over ~$300 for every player per month.

That is too much to fool around with.

That's not exactly empty space, I mean the MOBO is there... Now could have they fitted the PSU in there? Maybe, but by the looks of it they went the safe way to avoid another RRoD debacle.

The hardware runs at a low voltage IIRC, so not too hot. The OG PS3 was running pretty cool by 2008.

Microsoft do not want to mess around and have another RRoD on their hands. They'll take a bigger box over a nicer form factor and internal PSU.

It's amazing that Microsoft still has very poor physical hardware design at this point. Between the Xbox, Surface, and Zune and all the the other hardware projects you would think that side of the organization would be beefed up by now. Their circuit boards look like something a computer would design and the bulkiness of their parts, like the huge external PSU and bulky controller connectors, is uninspiring. I guess they want to keep it all in house for the sake of security but they really should outsource that shit.

I wanted the Surface team to handle the design for X1 but I guess the Xbox Team had their pride and shit lol.

larger heat sink means no fan noise while using low power modes. So you wont need a fan spinning when your just using the guide feature for live tv. Or when your streaming Netflix. But the fan will spin up when and stay at lower rpms through more power states.

Both my ps3 and xbox 360 got very loud even when streaming Netflix or watching a dvd.

What?

Larger heat sinks mean nothing (material and thermal paste). Larger doesn't mean more efficient. The chip itself might have more heat. Fan noise >< CFM. There are many more factors to consider.

There's no indication on "dedicated servers for every game" from Microsoft. There's also no indication that Microsoft will shoulder the cost of Azure hosting for third-parties - if they don't, there's no real reason for developers to go with Azure over more advanced solutions like Amazon AWS or Google Cloud Compute (as well as other offerings by smaller providers).

Even if it does, I reckon that it's gonna howl like a bitch to get the airflow to keep that sucker cool.

Seems like you're apologizing for Microsoft building a huge console box: We've heard neither the Xbone nor the PS4 in operation. The Xbox 360 S with its absurdly loud drive vibrating the whole system certainly isn't inspiring confidence in Microsoft's ability to deliver quality engineering.

Already disproven by COD:Ghosts. That Wired editor was talking out of his ass and completely falling for the MS marketing. Devs can use dedicated servers from MS just like they could from Amazon or Google. It's not free and it's not mandatory. Also pointless in some game types as well.

No they have not, it's Wired's imagination. You won't see anyone from MS confirming dedicated hosting servers for every game, because that's up to the developers and if they want to pay for them.

From Adam Sessler's E3 interviews we also know that Need for Speed: Rivals is going to have P2P multiplayer.

Considering it spins 4x faster than the Blu-ray drive in the PS3, I wouldn't say that's a valid indicator of anything.

Probably yours bro, mine is pretty quiet.

I've read this complaint many times on this forum, it's how the console is built. The 360 S is pretty loud when games aren't installed. But I wouldn't hold that against the system, there probably aren't all that many feasible options to quiet a disc drive while maintaining its read speed.

I agree.

Well I'm already told about that in your quoted. The customise layout - so the PSU don't have to be brick shape - make any shape in available space - that's what Sony really really good at it. See at PS3, first blu-ray drive don't look like PC DVD-Rom, or fan and heatsink don't look like PC heatsink.

I think they deliberately went with such a big box and the high price for being able to drop the price and release smaller SKUs on a yearly basis all the way through the generation. They have seen the impact a new SKU has with the Slim. Being able to do so constantly enables higher yearly sales and they have some flexibility on pricing as well (like after the Slim 360 average SKU price actually went up to $379). That and they obviously don't want to lose money on the hardware and instead make a healthy profit on that already. iPads sell better than comparable Android devices despite the premium price. Maybe even because of the premium price tag, more expensive = better in a lot of people's minds.

For the record I was only talking about dedicated hosting. Why are you being so dismissive like dedicated hosting for every multiplayer game like it's not a big deal?
Because not every multiplayer game benefits from dedicated hosting. If your netcode is right (not like Gears 2 for example) and your matches are 5 vs 5 or similar, dedicated servers won't have much impact. On the other hand, games like Battlefield would be terrible without dedicated servers. That's why them have them.
Basically on the Xbox One, everyone's complaints about paying for p2p are no longer valid. And at the price we are paying, it's really not that bad for what you get.
You get MP gaming with cloud-based matchmaking. I guess it's not bad but I still prefer to pay a similar amount and get 50+ games a year across three platforms on top of MP gaming.
Plus, online storage space for saves/profiles/whatever-isn't-a-game is unlimited.
Nothing is unlimited, except for the universe and human stupidity.

That's ridiculous. They went with a big box because it holds the cooling they need, the price is so to not loose much money. All consoles go through redesigns due mostly to die shrinks, it is not yearly and the XB180 is not special in any respect. You guys don't have to invent wild reasons why these companies do what they do.

@coldfoot

I reached out for clarification from both camps. Activision says they'll have more to say in August. Still waiting to hear back from MS.

@FeiRR

I am going to categorically disagree with your assessment on smaller matches not mattering. Let's ignore the fact that netcode optimization can over-favor slow connections to the point of hurting people with good connections or the fact that some netcode optimizations actually omit data that you aren't currently engaged in: Bottom line, People can manipulate their connection. Games have yet to automatically handle this well and even if it doesn't wind up giving host advantage, he can grief people to the point of them just dropping out by forcing the game to try and find a new host.

However, if it turns out that dedicated games aren't for every MP game on Xbox One then for sure PS+ is the best service.

Edit: Forgot to add the part about the unlimited verbiage:

Q: How much cloud space do I get? What is stored in the cloud?
A: Xbox Live offers Xbox One unlimited storage space in the cloud. Every piece of content—your profile, games, Achievements, and entertainment— can be stored and saved in the cloud so you can automatically access it anywhere, anytime, no matter where you are.

Yes, naturally if you managed to store 100's of GB of save data, I'm sure MS would cut you off and say, "Hey pal, we had to limit you" But let's be realistic, who is going to be saving that much uniquedata? Also, no reason to hurl insults just because I can see something possibly positive on Xbox One.

I'm sure we'll find out more come August.

Why don't you also reach out to EA regarding Need For Speed/FIFA, and also to Rare regarding KI, because dedicated servers are idiotic in a 1 on 1 fighting game.
Again, I'm willing to take a ban bet that Wired is wrong, anyone willing to take a ban bet that they are right?

You apologists are bordering on insane behavior.

That would have been quite something. Anyway I like the sleek look of it, and I'm positive it'll run nice and cool and very quiet. Not so sure about Sony's design though despite looking very sexy. The airflow worries me.

But all in all, both have very nice, sleek looking boxes. Whats the problem? :D

Mark: The funny thing is we found people -- the casual people -- prefer “Find Match”. They don’t like dedicated servers, because to them they feel like they’re generally being put into an unfair advantage, it’s a little more than they want to handle from a mental standpoint...

The reasoning for not doing dedis across the board is hilarious because Blops 2 has dedicated servers on PC and you still use the same Call of duty search menus that they've always used.

The real reason is that consoles need 10x the servers that PC needs due to sales plus you sorta need dedicated servers on PC to prevent cheating. And that costs a lot of money.

No money left on the table and impactful 'pricedrops' + redesigns of the system.

Smart strategy, the pr team screwed up big time delivering though, policy was too much/too fast of a change for the masses.

This was never happening or planned and I will bet everything a person can hold dear in this online world that there will be no price drop the first year of the XB1. The only thing that will get a price drop is the current 360 which is being positioned as the low cost barrier to entry. To even believe the aforementioned situation you describe is a strategy MS is embracing is lunacy.

This is pure bullshit. The games with the largest concurrent users are all on PC. World of Tanks, League of Legends, and WoW. See on PC the games that require servers monetize those servers directly, and don't lock you out of some unrelated Peer 2 Peer game that has no server overhead just to justify the fee.

yeah you better edit that post.

You mad because you cant afford a Xbox One.

Here: Have some cake to calm your nerves, bad boy
