TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa Zoo will add a display featuring the biblical account of creation following complaints to a city board about other displays with religious significance, including a Hindu elephant statue.

The Tulsa Park and Recreation Board voted 3-1 on Tuesday in favor of a display depicting God's creation of the world in six days and his rest on the seventh, as told in Genesis (search), the first book of the Bible.

The vote came after more than two hours of public comment from a standing-room-only crowd.

Zoo employees, religious leaders and others spoke in opposition, saying religion shouldn't be part of the taxpayer-funded scientific institution.

But those who favored the creationist exhibit, including Mayor Bill LaFortune , argued that the zoo already displayed religious items, including the statue of the Hindu god, Ganesh, outside the elephant exhibit and a marble globe inscribed with an American Indian saying: "The earth is our mother. The sky is our father."

"I see this as a big victory," said Dan Hicks, the Tulsa resident who approached the zoo with the idea. "It's a matter of fairness. To not include the creationist view would be discrimination."

The new display will include a disclaimer that says it represents one view. City attorneys also advised it be placed alongside other cultures' views of creation.

Tulsa Zoo exhibit curator Kathleen Buck-Miser estimated it would take about six months to research and organize the exhibit. She expressed qualms about the zoo delving into theological debate.

"I'm afraid we are going in the wrong direction," she said.

Board member Dale McNamara, who voted against the proposal, agreed.

"I do not like the idea of scripture at the zoo," she said.

Zoo officials had argued that the zoo does not advocate religion and that displays like the elephant statue are meant to show the animal's image among cultures. The same exhibit includes the Republican Party's elephant symbol.

I had NO fucking clue this country was so damn religious, or at the very least, in love with the idea of shoving religion [Read: Chrisitianity] down everyone's throats.

Good god, man, it's Tucson that's in Arizona, not Tulsa. Tulsa is a shithole where time literally flows backwards, Tucson is one of the neater cities in the US, traffic problems aside.

Kansas and Oklahoma are a bit nuttier than say, Georgia or South Carolina.

No that's Oklahoma, Arizona's to the west. But if you ask me (I'm Southern), I don't really consider Texas Southern either. It can depend on who you talk to though (I don't think Texans consider themselves Southern).

Again, Texas could be in the "maybe" camp depending on who you talk to, but certainly nothing above or west of it could be.

Regardless of what Texans might think, their state is southern, with the exception of a couple places like Austin. I would lump Oklahoma in too, except maybe call it "Southern, now with more tornados" or something.

Edit: Unless you want to get into that whole "southwest" thing.

You know I think I might start up a religion of Ghibli that way I can go into zoos and demand more Totoro statues. It's my religous right!!

Y'know, the zoo just ought to put the Creationist exhibit in, with the same kind of explanation text that goes along with examples of other religions in this country:

"Here, we see the myth of the Christian God creating the wold in 6 days. Christianity is a popular philosphy of people of the West."

That would satisfy me. ;)

Whoooa now. Texas is not Southern. Here are the real "Southern" states:

Mississippi
Alabama
Tennessee
South Carolina
North Carolina
Georgia
Arkansas

Louisiana is a bit iffy. Sorta southern.
Virginia isn't really Southern-it's better classified as Mid-Atlantic in culture.
NC just barely gets classified as Southern culturally.
Texas can only be classified as Texas. It's so distinctive in nature that you can't call it Midwest, and you can't call it Southwest, and you can't call it Southern culturally.
Kentucky isn't really Southern. We in the South lump it in with Ohio and Indiana.
Florida is like Texas, with a culture all of its own.

That's just for clarification. Southern culture is distinctive, and those that have lived in it for most of their lives know what's Southern and what's not, and can *keenly* distinguish the two.

Tulsa has one of the best Opera houses in the nation, not to mention some beautiful landscapping. It really is the gem of Oklahoma. If you have never visited Tulsa seeing the museums and landmarks then you are just talking out your ass.

Fuck that.

Divide the United States of America into quarters and you can clearly see that Texas is fuckin' Southern. Take your spin and stick it in your dupa!

And Ohio isn't f'in Midwest!

LOOK AT THE MAP, LOOK AT IT! >:|

I really disagree with all of that. Texas falls in line with its neighbors, barring a bunch of flag waving.

As for the original story, it's a zoo, but the animals aren't inside apparently.
