TV Problem - Help!

Problem with Panasonic CT-31SF10R (1993) TV:

A flickering, bouncing horizontal line at the bottom of the screen that randomly appears/disappears. Part of the picture below the line is squashed.

Sometimes, the entire picture gets squished into one bright horizontal line. A good whack on top of the TV temporarily fixes the problem. But it comes back after a few minutes.

This TV is doomed. I realize that's not helpful, but it would cost more to fix it than replace it.

Probably the Verticle IC/transistor is flaking out.
It could be as simple as cold solder joints, since whacking it seems to "help"(?)

If you have any skill in this area.
Open it up, look for a long black transistor/IC mounted on a metal piece (heatsink) coming off the main board.

They are usually labeled. There will be 20 or so pins. Best to remove old solder and apply new, but in a pinch you can just reheat the solder (reflow it) to secure the connection.

Good luck.

That happened to me with an older Sharp TV I had. I just whacked it now and then to correct it. Oddly enough, one time I got really frustrated and slammed it very hard; afterwards it worked fine for about six months.

I bought a new TV soon after that. My suggestion is to hit it as hard as Hell and buy a new TV soon if you can afford it.
