This is literally all the stream has been for the last 5 hours or so, and somehow, viewers haven't dropped. It's just so mesmerizing

Horizon irl confirmed.

lol no

I'm much more moe :3c

Its just that I'm still amazed at how big of an impact this whole thing has been.

You should definitely finish Black 2, it's one of the best Pokemon games in recent years! And if you can, play on challenge mode to face more competent bosses. Though if you're returning to pokemon after a long time and want people to discuss it with, the Pokemon Community Thread or XY OT (if you plan on playing XY) might be better places to start
I can't afford a 3DS right now, and I'd rather wait for Z. Plus I'm determined to hold out for a US version silver and black or white and black 3DS. I don't like any of the currently available colors.

I forgot about challenge mode but it sounds enticing. I might have to find someone to offload a few Pokémon to so I can restart without losing 'em.

In previous gens, how long was it between the first pair and the third version?

It depends, because there's also been remakes to account for not including Gen V.

RSE -> FRLG -> Emerald
DPPt -> Platinum -> HGSS

So this time around it just depends on which they're doing first, the inevitable RSE remakes or Pokemon Z.

Basically there is no pattern. Next coming is either Z/X2&Y2/RS remakes but honestly, there's no telling what will come next and when it will be announced. Every time we think we get a pattern GameFreak defies expectations, so what will come next and when it will come comes down to when they announce the next games. Remakes usually are announced around 3 months in advance, third versions 6 months in advance and full versions 9 (all approximately) months in advance, other than that it's all shifting with every next release.

It made a difference for a lot of people. Didn't give enough breathing room for Gen 2 to start when everyone was still making Gen 1 jokes and artwork.

Gen 1 was a massive hit in comparison to gen 2 because, as far as I'm aware, nothing even remotely close had ever been done before.
That's not something they can ever get again.

Part of the reason the viewership dropped like a rock is because Gen 1 was fresh in people's minds and they were disappointed.

Have two games being controlled by the same chat been done yet? If not they should do it for gen 3. One boy, one girl, same chat (maybe delay one starting by 5 or 10 seconds to increase the odds of a different starter pokemon).

Because starting it near-instantly worked out so well for Gen 2?
I'm not sure what some of you were expecting to happen with the popularity of the stream after Gen I, the first TPP run and the games even non-fans of the series are somewhat familiar with, or what you're expecting to happen with it in Gen III. Retaining a viewership as high as what Red/Blue reached isn't as simple as "wait a week to get people excited again"; it probably wouldn't have done much either way to stymie the loss from the Red to Crystal transition, and it might actually be working against the upcoming Emerald stream. The last event that directly tied to the popularity of the original run was the fight with Red, and not giving the people tuning back in for the fight an immediate reason to watch the next run only further removes the stream from their minds and solidifies the fact that what they had been participating in was effectively done.

Then you'd have different results based on the RNG most likely, which would mean one game's commands would interfere with the other's. Others have done games like tetris being inadvertently controlled by the main stream, though.

I'd like to see one where the two games are emulated as being linked to each other so the streams can trade pokemon with each other or battle.

For all the hand wringing being done over TPP's viewership, the fact that throughout Crystal it was able to maintain 9-15k viewers around the clock is still really fucking good. Beats out the single-stream viewship of most everything else on Twitch except a handful of the most popular LoL streams. Even here in the downtime it's got nearly 4k watching fucking Dogz. Sure it won't be as popular as TPP Red was, but even without the newness and the question of "Can they even beat the game?!" TPP still does pretty damn well for itself.

Since we're doing Emerald after completing Crystal, I'm kind of surprised the first run was Red and not Yellow.

It bugs me way more than it should that we used an original release and then started using thirdgames. This might sound insane to you but I feel the following would have been coherent paths:

Red - Gold - Ruby - Diamond - Black and Black 2 - X
Blue - Silver - Sapphire - Pearl - White and White 2 - Y
Yellow - Crystal - Emerald - Platinum - ?? - Z (if it ever comes out)

I really wish someone would tell me they'd also thought of this.

Yellow is just boring with a single starter and that Pikachu is tedious and worse than useless. Red/Blue > Yellow.
Meanwhile, Crystal and Emerald aren't all that different experiences from the original releases. Some improved aesthetic here and there and a couple of changes and additions ( can play as girl in Crystal, also ) But thats just my take on it.

Uhhhhh, about that....

I actually never played Yellow - I got Blue when it was first released. That said, I was under the impression that in Yellow you get Pikachu + the three original starters, no?

They'd have been released anyways.

What I said is true. Pikachu is the only starter. Sure, you can pick up Charmander & Co along the way effortlessly, but they aren't starters and sort of makes the team boring with all of them aboard. But thats just me. *shrug*

Technically yellow was the 4th version anyways. And the red we got outside of Japan was based around the improvements the Japanese blue had made (which was the real third version)
