Twitter gets redesign

I like this, reminds me of tumblr

I don't think Tweetbot does copy & paste of selected text though (you can copy a Tweet though). That's probably my only real complaint and I saw you mention that in your previous post. Everything else though I love and I've been using it for over a year now. Love the double/triple tap functions.

Actually, I should send that in as a suggestion. They usually update the app for fixes and stuff

Does it notify you of @ replies and DM's? That is my only current complaint with the tweetdeck app.

The new iPhone app is fantastic. The design choices are very thoughtful and targeted to the new/casual user.

It's not for me, but I dig it.

Haven't used it much on the iPhone but it feels faster (may be a placebo). I don't mind the new design but the discover tab is useless to me and I wish it didn't update by itself because I'm OCD about the "new updates" blue light.

The thing I'll really miss is that the previous version went to the "switch accounts" page when I first opened the app, allowing me to choose which to check first. Now if I reboot the app it goes directly inside one of my accounts (the one I saw last, I think), and I have to click "Me" then "Switch Accounts". Minor but annoying enough when you are used to it.

The previous version was good enough for me but to be honest I'm considering switching clients now. We'll see.

Not a total solution, but you can touch "me" and swipe to the left and it'll instantly bring up the account switcher. Saves a step compared to touching "me" and then touching "accounts".

Sorta looks like MySpace now.... doesn't it....

I'm loving the changes for the iphone app, looks slicker imo and less cluttered.

Thanks for the tip, that does help!

It's gone all manga-esque. Everything is back to front.

And yet they still don't allow you to change the white text box colour.

I hated the last design so this looks like it will be better for me personally. I still use TweetDeck Chrome to primarily access Twitter though.
And obviously I don't use it as much since G+ came out.

Should that really be expected? They would be verging on MySpace levels of ugly profiles

Well I guess I find it odd that you can change the text colour but not the background making the former option pretty limited. And I don't really see how one extra colour option would make the page My Space like. For one you don't have animated backgrounds.

Color options are limited by design.

You can have animated backgrounds on Twitter.

I don't understand how you opt in to the web version. It says you download the iPhone or Android version, which I did. I launched it. Okay, new app smell, great. Now how do I make it so that twitter.com gives me the new design?

It's a queue after you download the app. (via twitter employees)

It should automatically, it did for me at least. I guess they're having some sort of issues with that though.

Really!? That was one of the first things I ever tried. Guess they added that in afterwards.

You learn something new everyday.

EDIT:

:(

I've seen animated gifs as backgrounds. They're probably tricking the system somehow.

Also, not shocked that the person who wants text box colors also tried animated backgrounds. :)

I didn't even download the Android version and the web version changed for me. I know that is of no help to you, but it seems like the changes are at random and have nothing to do with the apps.

Maybe they've renamed a gif to jpeg or are using an apng file. I really just wanted to see if Twitter were silly enough to allow someone to have a seizure inducing background so I was pleasantly surprised that they had taken a precaution against that.

Did they remove screen rotation?

Edit: Well, seems like they did for the timeline. Now you can lay down while reading tweets again.

There's also a revamped desktop version of TweetDeck. It no longer uses Adobe Air, they've changed the icon so that it's blue and almost identical to the normal Twitter logo and there's a pop out window for composing tweets now. They've gotten rid of a hell of a lot of options such as translating tweets, changing the area where notifications pop up, changing notification volume (which can't be changed at all) and automatically posting a tweet longer than 140 characters to deck.ly. It seems very much like a desktop client of the actual Twitter site, and I noticed they've gotten rid of all mentions of the iOS and Android TweetDeck apps from the website (just like they did with the iPad version before canning it altogether).

I wondered how long it would be after the takeover before Twitter would basically kill it. I'm going back to the old version.

New version of Chrome TweetDeck seems exactly the same structurally, but has slightly better aesthetics (and blue icon), I like it.

Holy shit this iPhone app update update is fucking terrible. It looks nicer at first glance but they removed everything.

- Can't swipe over tweets
- Can't copy/paste tweets anymore
- Can't accept/decline follow requests if your account is set as private
- Google Translate removed
- Ability to save searches removed
- Nearby Tweets removed
- Landscape support removed (except in compose window)
- Peoples profile pages no longer say if they're following you or not, no longer say when they joined Twitter
- Direct Messages are buried in a submenu
- There's a separate search field for people and one for trends when the previous version did both.
- Bunch of options were removed like font size.
- Services menu removed (Favstar.fm etc)
- Cannot add people to lists, cannot see your favorites

UI is nicer overall but the blue toolbar is ugly as fuck and wastes space (there's nothing in the toolbar but a compose button). The extra padding/space on the sides of your timeline means slightly less room for tweets. No longer highlights your own tweets in the timeline etc.

The only thing I like is the 'interactions' in the mobile app. Tells you if your tweets are retweeted and who by, who has followed you recently, etc.

But Sean's list, I totally agree with. They removed shit loads of functionality, and it just seems like it's the website's new functionality crammed onto the mobile platform with no regards to the Tweetie legacy. Ehhhh.

Yeah, it's really janky. I never used it anyway though. I wonder if the Tweetie developer leaving the company resulted in them being a lot lazier with the interactions and details.
