For the past few months, we haven’t been hearing any pretty exciting statistics about Twitter. Growth at Twitter seems to have been quieting down.

Analysts over at RJMetrics yesterday published a report about the latest data on Twitter’s users and engagement, which paints a two-sided picture of the future of the San Francisco-based Internet company.

As of December 2009, the total number of registered user accounts was 75 million. Although that figure may seem to be rather impressive, but in fact the percentage of active Twitter users is quite worrying. In the early days, close to 80 per cent of the Twitter community are active users. However, it has dropped consistently over the past six months, reaching an all-time low of 17 per cent. In other words, only 15 million users publish at least one tweet a month, a far cry from what many bloggers and companies have expected.

I don't think the research firm took into account that majority of twitter users are moving to twitter clients and websites like brizzly. Does this research only gather information from twitter.com?

The vast majority of people of people I know that joined Twitter in the last year have stopped using it. They may still follow their feed, but they hardly ever tweet anymore, if at all. All of these people are active on Facebook, though. For the average person, it was just a trend — the usage statistics will only continue to drop.

Agreed. Twitter I can only see either companies or something using it, not regular people with Facebook accounts.

I think the drop off is because it is hard to shut off the mental filter that keeps you from saying or typing every trivial thought that runs through your head. Some people lack this filter and can tweet the day away.

Twitter can be useful even if you don't tweet.

I use it daily for staying updated on video game news, CNN, rotten tomatoes, weather, traffic, local events, discounts and what not.

It's nice to pull out my phone or click a single link on my computer to get all these updates.

The article missed the boat interpreting the data. Look at the last year. Though a lower percentage of Twitter users are posting content (down to 17% from a peak of about 33%), the number of accounts has grown by about 500% over that span. So, overall, more people are posting than ever, and many, many more are consuming that content.

Rather than calling these stats "shocking" and concluding that Twitter is becoming less popular, it might be that it's evolving into a more popular service. Only now, a smaller percentage (but higher overall number) of people are providing more of the content. Basically, there are just many more lurkers now. By this interpretation, Twitter's evolving from a messaging system into a hybrid web-wide forum.

20% of Twitter users getting 80% of the followers and producing 80% of the content, similar to the Pareto principle (80-20 rule)?

Never really understood the appeal of Twitter. Never got into the Twitter craze. I made an account to try and win a XBLA game, but that is as much as I have used the site.

Judging anything by the percentage of user's tweeting is kinda silly.

I've never sent a tweet in my life, but I've got an account so I can receive breaking news alerts, sports scores, or just stuff from the few people who actually have interesting shit to say.

That's the real usefulness of twitter, not communication between friends.

Eh, most likely a lot of twitter users are signing up to follow people, but not for the tweeting.

I think I posted one thing in the history of my twitter account, but I check it a couple times a day to see what news is out there. I use it like a mini-RSS feed for various sports and video game journalists.

Twitter certainly got played up entirely too much. If anything it is more of a marketing tool than anything else.

Facebook will continue to be the most useful site for actually networking with friends and family.

Myspace will continue to be the website for people with ADD, who just love animated gifs and want to become virtual groupies to indie bands that no one has ever heard of outside of their internet groupies.

Heh, I find that ammusing, just changing the order the graphs are in could easily change a persons opinion. The last one makes me thing Twitter is doing fine, and its just because more and more people are using it as an RSS feed then saying random crap no one cares about.

Uhh...what?

As far as I know it's just been like this..

MSN Messenger > Myspace > Facebook > Twitter

And they were many years apart.

AIM was really popular too

Twitter is awesome when it comes to breaking news events

Signed up for Twitter, never really got the point of it. Had a myspace, shut it down a year ago when it was far past it's prime, and started up a facebook page which I use each day. Facebook is still hitting it's stride in my opinion, there is too much demand for social networking for it to fail now unless it becomes what myspace is. Facebook is the best way for me to actually keep in touch with people I know and am related to without having to pick up the phone.

As someone who does not have a facebook or myspace I actually like twitter. I restrict it to very close friends and family only and can actually say whatever the fuck I want.

There are plenty of people who have an account solely for whatever feeds they're interested in. It's not really that surprising.
