Article:
Ubisoft describes Anno 1800 as a combination of the best features of its previous games, and it's widely considered to be up there with some of the best strategy games in the genre. Some of that delicious gameplay is locked behind an exorbitant amount of DLC, but the base game offers plenty to get your teeth into.

Right now, Anno 1800 is 90% off on Steam, which has led to the biggest influx of players since March. 15,585 players have logged in simultaneously over the past 24 hours, making it the second-highest surge in players since the game launched. It even reached more players than it did during a free weekend in November 2023.

If you've ever wanted to build fantastic cities, quash conspiracies, and rise to the top of the political ladder, Anno 1800 is well worth your time. Like all city builders, you need to be adaptable, strategic, and calm at all costs in order to succeed. Anno 1800's particular USP are the crews of specialists that you can send across the globe to seek fame and fortune.

Just give the base game away for free, the actual realized game (all the dlc) is very fucking expensive. Always kept me from buying it.

Which DLCs are "required"?
Yep, that's the question as there are a ton of DLCs. I will browse some forums to see what makes most sense as I suspect it will take a year for the new game to get to a good state as usual with complex strategy/builder games.

Edit: Just getting Gold edition or Anniversary ones makes most sense i think.

Gold has all the Season Passes, ie DLC with gameplay/area changes. And Anniversary adds cosmetic DLC on top.

The game has FOUR season passes...

Hey, Ubi:

go fuck yourself middle finger GIF

Which DLCs are "required"?
None. Its like you bought the game on release and you can sink already a huge amount of time just into the base game. With all these DLC's I think the game is even too fckn big! I had to stop my playthrough last year around 200hrs mark....just too much. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

So you would say that the game in the vanilla version can stand on its own and doesn't "need" any of the DLCs?

Yes ofc. It had to be playable on release without DLC, right?
Eh, playable or fun / interesting that is the question.

I am a fan of Paradox strategy games. They are all "playable" on release but generally take a year or two plus some DLCs to get going. CK3 being potentially the only exception to this as I think it was good at release.

So is Anno 1800 CK3 (plus free patches) playable or is it Victoria 3 playable (only got interesting more than a year post release and with some DLCs).

For someone who wants to dip into this, should I go for Anno 1404 History Edition or Anno 2205 Complete?

Anno 1800 Gold is too expensive for me to try.
Don't let the FOMO get to you guys. I'd only consider the DLC packs if you already know you'll love it OR have money to burn. IMO the vanilla game more then stands on it's own. So I'd at least get that first and play a few hours to see if it tickles your fancy before investing in any DLCs.

I will never understand why these DLC's are not available as a bundle for a decent price. Paradox has the same problem. All what these companies achieve with these huge DLC list's who add up to hundreds of dollares...is scaring people away.

I played it on release and it was absolutely fine. As I mentioned the DLC's are nearly tooo much. I also played CK3 on release for more than 400hrs...so...I guess it was fine for me as well. ;)

That's not all they achieve. They are also selling hundreds of dollars of dlc to the hardcore audience, and presumably they have run the numbers and consider that to be the way to go.

I dont know, maybe you are right. But I am part of this hardcore audience and I always wish there would be DLC bundles for a reasonable price.

All games have individual dlc's that can cost a lot when put together, not something just Ubi does. Also you can get the year 5 or definitive edition which contains all dlc's and it costs like less than 45 euros, maybe even less on third party sites, so what's the problem? Anno 1800 has received some great content over the years and it's a fantastic game.

None, game gets a bit overwhelming as is once you get to electricity/high population tiers.

The ones that ive found worth it however were:
Passage
Land of Lions

For some extra flavour:
Tourist season
Sunken treasure
Dockland
Bright harvest (pretty much just pay for convenience)
Empire of the Skies (airships might be in the base game, i dont remember, if so ignore this one)

I'd say 1404 and 1701 are both great- I think each had only one or two addons- I'd assume included in current editions. Even 1602 and 1503 might be alright but those certainly aged and look a bit plain.

The best in it's genre IMO. And as other have said you don't need any DLC, the game is almost too complex with all seasons.

Already preordered Anno 117 Gold Edition btw, I played it and I can't fuckin wait!!

Each Season Pass include 3 big DLCs each and a decorating pack, just buy the 4 Season Passes and you get all the DLCs and some decorating ones, the rest is just cosmetic/decorating stuff.
So you can remove all the big DLCs from the list if you buy the Season Passes for less than the DLCs bought individually.

Individually sold DLCs are for people that are interested in only some of the DLCs, just like every DLCs of the Train Simulator games, you never buy them all unless you really want to play them all.

Also there are already bundles with everything included that are discounted too.
But hey, it's Ubisoft, so you have to shit on them in this forum... (same apply to EA, Microsoft and Nintendo it seems here)

I am not going to post any links for obvious reasons, but there is a way of unlocking all the game's DLCs for free with an exploit, if you own the base game that is.

Ended up not getting any as Anno games do not have any UI/font size sliders. Subjective but for me the whole interface looks very small even on a 1080P screen, forget 1440P.
